I knew it was controversial, but I'm totally confused at this point. I do like soy milk, and tofu cubes in my salad at lunch each day.
I don't really have time to make nut butter and nut milk and all that stuff. I also don't feel that soy clogs me up as bad as plain old carbs. I feel that I benefit from the protein, which I wouldn't get anywhere else - I can't stand regular milk, rice milk is yummy but is chock full of carbs... Maybe I'll get almond milk to drink each day, rather than having a glass of soy. That will get me protein.
And no more marinated tofu pieces, I can tell those are heavy... but I'm sticking with my protein salad from the coop, because it really fills me up with seeds and tofu, some raw veggies and lots of different types of greens.
Damn. I really am all confused. but anything I'm doing that keeps me from eating french fries and pizza has got to be better than that.
Best would be to control my eating. I will however switch to almond milk to drink with lunch. Any knowledge anyone wants to send my way would be great. Thanks for the heads up!

| If YOU feel good eating soy, do continue eating it.

| sorry, I didn't want to confuse you. Just wanted to bring it up, in case you hadn't thought about it. I guess tofu is a good crutch to keep you from pigging out on pizza. If you are losing weight and feel fine, then don't feel too much pressure. Just keep one eye open in case you notice any problems in the future, then you can be aware and re-evaluate.

I have to agree with you that too much soy products are not good for you unless you eat it in the fermented form like the Japanese do. I lived in Japan for four years and they do eat a lot of soy but mostly in the fermented form such as miso, tempeh, fermented soy milks and fermented tofu. I became almost addicted to the miso soup that the Japanese have with every meal including breakfast. The unfermented tofu that we eat in the US contains phytic acid which prevents the absorbtion of certain minerals that are essential to our well being. The fermentation process eliminates the phytic acid and that is why the Japanese are probably the healthiest people in the world, at least they are the longest lived of any country. Some of them eat natto which is the most vilest smelling stuff I have ever seen anyone eat but it is healthy. I suspect that the reason many people feel better when eating soy products is that they are replaceing stuff like pizza and Big Macs and of course the unfermented soy is probably much better for you than that junk.
Good luck !

This is all true!
But the amount of miso in the soup is not much. 1 bowl is probably... 1 teaspoon of miso? And like you said, it's fermented. So even though you were addicted, you were addicted to a fermented soy product that has proven health value, and you ate it in small amounts throughout the day (I am assuming).
Waaayyyy different than eating a big ol' soy burger or main dish tofu.
I am reading an amazing health book right now, it isn't about soy but it is helping me put the pieces together, hopefully it will shed some light on his soy operates in the big picture!

I WAS exercising a dependence on soy, which I realize was me not trusting myself to be able to moderate. It was a crutch ("I know this stuff is healthy, so if I eat it a lot, I'm going to be OK") It's all about moderation, and that's why I love this place - someone called me on it, so to speak, and I've found a lot of strength from investigating what was really going on with me and soy.
So cool. :)

- Soy in China by annaconda

| When I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks in China, I noticed the warm soy milk they consumed was slightly different than anything I was used to. And I love miso too. Thanks - I see what you're saying. Also, if you ever watch Iron Chef, once I saw Natto battle. That stuff is insane. I'm glad I wasn't in the room to smell the results!
