Hi, Dancing Love--yes, I saw that too and was also confused by it. You're right, the Soviet Union fell apart not too long after the Harmonic Convergence in 1987. Other Kryon channelings I've read refer to the energy shift as starting in 1987 because of the Convergence, and Kryon seems to emphasize this year as being very significant. I'd have to hazard a guess that what Lee Carroll is referring to here are two significant, and perhaps different, astronomical years:

1) 1987 Harmonic Convergence (followed by the end of the Soviet Union in 1989)
2) 1998 Galactic Alignment--since this has already taken place, we are ALREADY IN the "2012" energy that has been predicted by the ancients.

Not sure why the author lumped the two together, except that it's only 11 years between the two events, and maybe the Harmonic Convergence was the precursor for the Galactic Alignment, or the very beginning of an energy shift that has intensified once the Galactic Alignment took place. ...and, what's 11 mere years when we're talking about a major shift in energy, AND, Time is an Illusion and Everything is Happening All At Once so the events Carroll is writing about are taking place in this very NOW moment anyway! :)
