Dear long-island:

Thank you very much for your comment! I believe as you do. I don't put anything on what I call my "grass"--no fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, etc. Guess that's why most of my lawn consists of weeds. When the water-wasters use this stuff on their lawns, then the chemicals run-off into the gutter along with the excess water, and it goes right to the storm drain and out into the ocean, poisoning the Mother's "life-blood". I just read an article that hundreds of seals are washing up onto the shores of California beaches, either dead or sick, because of eating algae that produces a natural toxin. Scientists aren't sure why there is so much algae, but one theory is that ocean pollution is causing it.

I've read about fresh bodies of water having this problem also--pollutants can cause an algae bloom, and the algae in turn reduces the amount of oxygen in the water, thus killing fish and other vegetation.

You are so right--Mother Earth is a living and breathing BEing, and humans are making her sick. I believe a lot of people, particularly those of Western cultures, see the Earth as something to be exploited and used, not cared for. It is up to people like you and I to care for her and educate others the best we can, by writing about it and by voting every opportunity we get for environmentally aware politicians, but mostly by loving the Mother and living our lives as an example to others.

Love,

Liora Leah
