Homemade Frozen Yogurt4 y

Simple recipe, simple process, simply delicious results

I just wanted to share that I’ve recently started making my own frozen yogurt - it’s easy and good! Ingredients: 1 quart plain yogurt 3-4 ripe peaches Stevia First you strain your plain yogurt 2 hours (I use organic whole milk yogurt but lowfat will work). This will reduce the yogurt solid down to a little over half a quart. You throw out the liquid that is extracted and keep the solid. Then you chop up several very ripe peaches and puree with the yogurt and some stevia, to taste. Chill, then pour into ice cream maker. Once it thickens (20-30 minutes), add diced chunks of peach, p ...   read more

Why the Venti Frappuccino?5 y

An Observation made in a Greek Restaurant

I was sitting in a small Greek restaurant the other day. It’s next-door to a Starbucks. In walks a rather Large lady, I would estimate she is in her mid-30’s. She had in her hand a VENTI (huge!) frappuccino. My first thought, on seeing her and her overweight condition, was ”she sure doesn’t need a venti!” As she stood there waiting on her food, a boy who worked at the restaurant asked her, ”You’ve lost a lot of weight, haven’t you?” She said, ”Yeah.” He said, ”How much?” and she replied, ”135 pounds... but I was sick recently and gained 10 back.” WOW. First of all, it’s great that s ...   read more

Junk Food County6 y

Why many rural Americans can't get nutritious foods.

Junk Food County Why many rural Americans can’t get nutritious foods. The unhealthy truth about country living. Brenda Ann Kenneally for Newsweek Recent studies show that many rural families are dependent on high-fat food from convenience stores like this one in South Carolina for too much of their diet Fannie Charles, 46, lives six  miles from the nearest grocery store in rural Orangeburg County, S.C. She doesn’t own a car, so she pushes a cart along the side of the highway. (There are no sidewalks.) It’s difficult, since she weighs 240 pounds and ...   read more

Strawberry Lemonade6 y

A summertime favorite!

The key to this recipe is to TASTE it and adjust it to your preferences. Ingredients: 5-6 lemons (use more for a stronger/sharper taste) 1 cup strawberries (preferably organic) Pure water (preferably distilled) Your preferred sweetener(s) of choice - I am using agave nectar and stevia Instructions: If you need to dissolve your sweetener in warm water, then heat up 2 cups of water, stir in your sweetener, and then let the water cool back to room temperature. Squeeze the lemons, pour the juice (a little pulp is fine) into about 8 cups water. Pour 2 cups of this liquid into your ...   read more

Kombucha: From Russia, with love6 y

A talk with a young Russian doctor.

Last month I met a nice Russian girl. She and her husband were visiting the United States. She is 30 years old, and a neurologist. We had an interesting talk about how she practices medicine in Russia. She spends a minimum of 30 minutes with each patient, up to an hour or even two hours, as necessary. She talks with them, gets to know their problem and personality, etc. She tries to prescribe exercise, diet and homeopathy before she tries prescription drugs. She sounded in most every way to be the kind of doctor I would like to have, and that I wish all doctors were! Unlike American docto ...   read more

Creamy Avocado Pudding, Indonesian Style 6 y

Unusual flavor, delightful texture!

**This got deleted in the crash so I am adding it back** Creamy Avocado Pudding, Indonesian Style (Drink, shake, smoothie... but more like a pudding!) In a blender, put enough water to cover the blades, then add 1 whole ripe avocado, chopped. Blend. Start adding 1/2 cup chopped fresh ripe (sweet) pineapple, then add 1/2 large or 1 small frozen banana (in chunks). Finally, add some organic instant coffee granules, maybe 1/2 tsp? Not much, just for a hint of flavor. OPTIONS: -1 Tablespoon sorghum molasses instead of the pineapple. -Instant coffee substitute such as Roma or Tee ...   read more

2 Minutes Rebounding = Amazing!6 y

You knew it was good for you, but did you know just HOW good?

My uncle has been doing a lot of rebounding. He recently got some sort of physical analysis done and his reading for his lymphatic system was so high(good) that the doctor (naturopath?) thought it was wrong! Then when he learned that my uncle rebounds, he said, ”oh - that explains it. You have an excellent lymphatic system!” This short conversation with my uncle got me interested, so I found this fascinating information on the benefits of rebounding for even a short period of time! Now I hop on my rebounder whenever I pass by! I’m not really talking about exercise here, folks - that’ ...   read more

Are You On A Diet?7 y

...because you didn't eat cookies?

I went to a concert last night. Afterwards, there was a reception. I looked at the food table briefly, then moved on. All they had was grocery store bakery plain cookies with fancy icing, and a bowl of punch. I wasn’t tempted in the least by the cookies or punch - I don’t even like those things. Someone standing nearby saw me take a look and then move on. They asked me, through a mouthful of cookie, ”Are you on a diet?!?” I think this was meant in that ”if you are on a diet, you don’t need to be, because you are a good body weight” way. But good grief! I didn’t eat cookies, so I’m on a d ...   read more

Vegan Reuben Sandwich7 y

This is delicious, plus it's a great way to eat a lot of sauerkraut!

Ingredients: Rye bread, the small kind for appetizers (or you could use ezekiel bread) Avocado Sauerkraut Thousand Island dressing (note: Make a thousand island dressing according to your criteria. Mixing some organic ketchup into grapeseed vegenaise and adding a little pickle relish is one way.) To Assemble: Lightly toast the rye bread. Cut the avocado. Put a slice of avocado on each piece of bread. Top with a spoonful of sauerkraut. Pour a little dressing on the top. Eat and enjoy! This is easy, is yummy, plus it’s a great way to eat a lot of sauerkraut.   visit the page

Brainfood...7 y

Fastfood = Brainfood? Hmmm.

I drove past a Krystal’s (a fastfood hamburger place for those who don’t know) and saw this sign displayed: --------- BREAKFAST IT’S BRAINFOOD --------- Are they trying to drive away customer’s? Who could possibly think that Krystal’s has brainfood????? Obviously whoever created this sign had already eaten too much ”brainfood”!!!   visit the page

Fermented vegetables and fruits: Online book7 y

A global perspective on fermentation. Useful whether you are new to fermentation or an old pro!

FERMENTED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES - A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE. I stumbled across this. It seems to be an online book that provides quite a bit of information on fermentation - different types of fermentation, why it is beneficial, how it is done, etc. Useful whether you are new to fermentation or are an old pro. http://www.fao.org/docrep/x0560e/x0560e00.htm#con It includes telling of many different vegetables and fruits and how they are fermented around the world, and telling us how to do it - recipes! Worth looking at!   visit the page

Coconut Oil Fudge7 y

Recipe I made tonight

Okay, I made some coconut oil fudge for the first time. The taste even exceeded my expectations! Kinda light and fluffy in a way, even though it’s rich. The basic recipe called for 1 part each of coconut oil and cocoa powder, and 2 parts maple syrup. (This is actually the pie filling in some raw cookbook). But I was just dumping things in, did it my way. Here’s approximately what I did: heaping 1/2 c. coconut oil (gently melted into mostly liquid form) approx 1/3 c. sorghum molasses, topped up to being 1/2 cup by liquid lecithin 1/3 c. maple syrup heaping 1/2 c. cocoa powder 1/4 ...   read more

Amaretto Smoothie7 y

Crazy about Amaretto!

Okay, this is something I concocted the other day. It is VERY delicious. I eat it for breakfast. It is not proper food combining, as far as natural hygiene goes. But it does have a lot of minerals and different types of fat. Plus, the cinnamon and the fat will help keep the blood sugar from spiking. I am crazy about amaretto, so I think it tastes FANTASTIC!!! Recipe: 1/2 cup water 3-4 oz. coconut cream (coconut milk) (100 ml.) 2 brazil nuts 5 almonds 3 or 4 walnuts 1 tablespoon flaxseeds 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 1/2 or 2 frozen ripe bananas (broken into small chunks) 1 tabl ...   read more

Praying Mantis7 y

Unusually large bug - beautiful in its own way.

On Saturday I was at my Aunt and Uncle’s house. I saw a very large praying mantis perching on a bench in their garden. I would say it was easily 7 inches in length. My aunt and uncle confirmed it was the largest they had ever seen, too. Here are some of the photos I took - I think it’s a beautiful bug. Note: These pictures are only slightly larger than life size!   read more

Quick Easy Chicken Peppers Recipe (4 Ingredients)7 y

NYC and Transfats7 y

New York is getting serious about transfat in restaurants. I don't live in New York, but I think it's a good move.

New York is getting serious about transfat in restaurants. I don’t live in New York, but I think it’s a good move. I posted this link in the News forum: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thecheckout/2006/09/nyc_to_restaurants_get_an_oil.html Here’s the main article, but there are a lot of comments on the website. ------------------------------------- NYC to Restaurants: Get an Oil Change by Annys Shin In what could be a bellwether move, New York City’s Board of Health yesterday took the first step in requiring restaurants to sharply limit the amount of trans fat in their food ...   read more

Chinese Spitting7 y

Spit a loogie to the ground. In public. Did you know?

Did you know? Chinese people think it’s bad to swallow your own saliva. They try to spit it out instead of swallowing it. When you are walking around in China you will see a LOT of people spitting! It’s mostly older men, but you can see anyone doing it. Sometimes you can see a person walking around with a drink bottle or can, which is their ”spit bottle”, a portable disposable spitoon. Ew! By the way, I’ve been to China and Singapore, seen it done. Numerous times. Here’s some info about it. -------------------------------------------------------------- During the 2008 Olympics, ...   read more

Unknown Fruit!7 y

Does anyone know what it may be?

I noticed this fruit tree just the other day! It is growing just down the street from me (and there is another one growing near the sidewalk next to a bank, just a few blocks away). The fruits are about the size of cherries. The inside is somewhat like a guava - yellow, soft, sweet and tons of tiny seeds. I’m not sure the outside is edible, it had no taste and a somewhat tough texture, so I didn’t eat it. Does anyone know what this fruit is? I took several photos:   read more

Margarine vs. Butter7 y

They are NOT the same. So learn the difference, already.

Okay, here’s a pet peeve of mine: People saying ”butter” when they are referring to margarine. Sorry, it’s not butter. If you want butter, eat butter. If you want margarine, they call it ”margarine” or ”fake butter” or ”spread.” I do eat butter. At home it’s organic butter. Sometimes when I’m out I want a little butter. I ask the waitress, ”Do you have any REAL butter?” They will say yes. Occasionally I’ll get lucky and they will bring me actual butter. But frequently they will bring me something like ”Land O Lakes Buttery Taste Spread” which is basically partially hydrogenated veg ...   read more

Spider7 y

Photo of a yellow zipper spider who lives in my yard.

Here is a photo of a BEAUTIFUL large spider who lives in my yard. He is really large, too - bigger than my whole thumb! He creates beautiful large webs, some of them ”zipper” webs. I try to leave him alone so that he will stay around. (I say ”he” - I don’t know the gender).   visit the page

Grocery Store Visit, Part VI7 y

The man with warts needs Diet Coke, apparently.

Last night I ran to the store to get an organic cabbage (then I ate some delicious coleslaw for dinner). While I was in the checkout line, two pitiful looking people came to the refrigerated drinks in the line next to me and the woman said to the man, ”There’s the Diet Coke - the type you need. I want the regular Coke.” They were both overweight and the man’s whole face was covered in warts, I think he might have been a little mentally slow, at least he sortof looked that way. It was really sad.   visit the page

New Airline Regulations7 y

I can't bring my own water on the airplane?

Okay, I just posted this on the ”News” forum, but then I realized that I want to add it to my blog. This is upsetting to me! I can’t bring my own water on board???? These are the new rules - on USA domestic flights and flights to/from the U.K., NO BEVERAGES or liquids may be brought onto the plain. They have beverages, of course, but you can’t bring them. Same thing for toothpaste, herbal liquid tinctures, makeup, etc. So you would need to put any of these things into your check-in baggage (would could be lost or stolen). I haven’t flown since they made this change. I have been bring ...   read more

Diet Coke Disaster

Obese man. Shopping cart FULL of 6-pack bottles of Diet Coke. 8 6-packs, in fact - which equals 48 Diet Cokes. Small bag of ”other” things. He could barely walk. Sad.   visit the page
