Maintaing Your Metabolism

It's a known fact that during extended cleanses or fasts, the body's metabolism dramatically slows down. On my last cleanse, I clocked my heartbeat as low as 60 bmp. One thing I have consistently done during all of my cleanses is to exercise. During previous cleanses, I have always used an elliptical machine in the mornings and afternoon, as well as plenty of crunches. Last summer I also did quite a bit of yard work. During this cleanse, I have been using a treadmill as I gave up on ellipticals because they kept breaking down on me. I have these machines in my home. I've had the treadmill for about three months now and am quite happy with it. Anyway, my point here is that by continuing to exercise during the cleanse, it helps to keep my metabolism from slowing too much. This slower metabolism can also have negative effects on your body post-cleanse. It may take as long as three or four weeks for your metabolism to get back to normal after an extended fast. In the mean time, if you aren't careful about your diet and continue to exercise, you can quickly pack on pounds that you shed during the cleanse, not to mention defeating the purpose of cleaning up your system.
Exercise before, during, and after any cleanse or fast can help to keep your metabolism at a more stable rate, not to mention the health benefits associated with exercise. I don't have to beat a dead horse here and tell everyone about the epidemic in the U.S. concerning obesity. In most cases, it is a result of a poor diet and lack of exercise. Many individuals are initially attracted to the Master Cleanse for reasons of weight loss. This in and of itself is not necessarily bad as they are seeking to improve their current health condition, but it is not what the Master Cleanse is really about. By incorporating a combination of a healthy diet after the cleanse and exercise before, during, and after the cleanse, you are really on the road to true self-improvement and recovery.
Here are some general recommendations during a cleanse or fast.
Avoid strenuous workouts or heavy labor during your fast. If you have a normal regimen you can't stand to quit for a few days, cut it down by more than half.
Do light, low-impact exercise: walking, jogging, gardening, or light work.
Do simple yoga exercises to help balance and stimulate your inner organs.
Stretch and breathe. Do not underestimate the healing power of deep, conscious breathing.
And most important, develop and maintain a regular exercise schedule after completing your fast. Exercise is essential to proper nutrient absorption and triggers endorphins that help you feel good.
