Grandfather and the Breezes

As a very little girl, I spent the summers with my Grandfather who would teach me the Old Ways. One summer when I was maybe three or four, it had been very hot and muggy with no breezes to help cool you off. I was probably being a little pest as only a three or four year old can do and complaining about the mugginess. My Grandfather lived way out in the country and other than his immediate farm, there was only wilderness around his place. So that day he took me by the hand and said "walk with me". In those days, kids obeyed their elders and didn't talk back, so I immediately took his hand and walked with him.

We walked to where there was a little rise in the land that was mostly open and only had a very few trees. You could see all around easily. He sat me down by one of the trees and told me to close my eyes and be still. I was to imagine/pretend that I could feel the breezes; I was to imagine/pretend that I could hear them speak. I was to sit with the tree and talk to it, telling it to imagine the breeze through its leaves and to tell the other trees to imagine the breeze as well.

He said to feel the breeze on my cheeks, to pretend/imagine that I became the breeze. That I would (as the breeze) whisper though the leaves on the trees and across the farm. Grandfather said to sit there until it was very real and then I could walk home to the farm. Then he left.

Now, I was very young, but I had been with my Grandfather a lot so knew that I better do what he said. So I sat there and got quiet (if that is possible for one so young) and did my best to imagine/pretend I could feel the breeze and that I was the breeze. After some time I KNEW that I was the breeze. I could FEEL the breeze. I was gently brushing through the trees. I was happily dancing over the farm. Then I was back sitting by the trees. I got up and started to walk back to the farm. Not far along I saw my Grandfather walking toward me. He was laughing. Naturally he had been watching me from not far away. He greeted me with a big hug. He asked me how I enjoyed being the breeze and if I could still feel it. YES! I could! He could feel it as well! We walked back to the farm feeling the breeze all the way.
