Keeping your dog happy can seem like a challenge, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. You may be unsure of what to do with your dog, what will tire them out, or what types of activities they would like the most.

If you need help figuring out what will make your dog happy and how you can help thrive in its current environment, check out these suggestions, and see if they work for your pooch.

1. Long Walks That Tire Them Out

Consider finding a new hiking path or place to walk, and take your dog outside on a walk that will tire it out. Calculate how many miles you think your dog can handle, or look for someplace that has a variety of long and short trails. That way, you can always take a break if you would like, or go to a shorter trail if you sense your dog is getting really tired out.

Another option to consider is SniffSpot, an app to find large backyards or other areas for your dog to run and play. This is ideal for owners of reactive dogs, so they can get a chance to have fun without worrying about running into another animal.

2. Playing Catch for as Long as They Want

Does your dog live for tennis balls? Get a whole bunch of them from the store, and perhaps even a ball thrower (a little tool you can use to throw the tennis ball). Throwing a ball is good exercise for you, and your dog will likely enjoy chasing it. This can be a good way for indoor dogs to burn energy and have fun at the same time, plus enjoy playing with you.

Dogs of all sizes and ages can enjoy this, although you might want to take things a little slower if you have an elderly dog.

3. Swimming Somewhere Safe

Many types of dogs enjoy swimming, or at the very least, playing in the water. This can be a good exercise for your pet, or just a fun way to get them outdoors. Although you may know of beaches that are dog-friendly, one way you can ensure safety is to put your own pool in.

Putting in a pool means you'll be able to get in and play with your dog whenever you want. It can be something the whole family enjoys, and if you ever decide to sell your house, having a pool can make it easier to do so.  Take a look at the possible pool loan rates and decide if this is something that is right for your household.

4. Going on a Long Hike

Hiking is a great way to burn calories, exercise, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Before you plan a hike, think about your dog's abilities, what they enjoy the most, and where you can take them. If they love to climb, someplace with hills and small mountains might be ideal for them. Find out what your local nature centers offer, and see if any of these possibilities are right for you and your pet. Don't forget to get a flea and tick preventative, since they are likely to pick up bugs on one of your outings.

There are a variety of ways you can get outside and have fun with your dog, while keeping them happy at the same time. Plan on a walk that will tire them out, and find new places to visit where you live. Consider taking them to the park for a game of fetch, or even having a pool put in for swimming. Hiking is another option, too, especially if your dog loves to be outdoors.
