"Mommy, why does that lady walk funny?" "Sweetie, What's Wrong With You?" "Hey _____, what happened to you?"

Every time I go out in public I get stares and questions. Its not so bad in my nearby small town where there are few secrets, but I work in the city where hardly anyone knows me. So folks-here's what happened, and why I walk funny.

I have had problems with my neck and lower back for about four years off and on. I had eighteen months when I felt so well and was able to be active and I considered myself cured. In July of 2005 I fell, I was walking down a hill with a gallon of distilled water when suddenly I lost my footing and fell downhill and landed on my head and neck. I was shaken up a lot, but was more upset about losing my drinking water than worried about being hurt. The next day I was sore, but never thought about being injured. Two days later I knew I was in trouble, all the old symptoms had returned. I knew that I had gotten better once, and I was sure I'd be well in no time. I took a week's vacation and planned to see the chiropractor. Before my first appointment my much beloved 15 1/2 year old dog died about midnight. I gently carried her outside and buried her the next day in rock hard mountain clay. When that was over I cried a bit, then fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up I could hardly move. The chiropractic care helped a little, but I never did regain my former strength. Three weeks later I had to bury my other dog, who seemingly mourned himself to death. I had therapy when I could find time, but remained weak enough to need a cane most of the time. Still, I was not overly concerned.
The week before thanksgiving I was driving home at dusk when a big buck deer ran out of some brush and landed on my car. I have been told that if I had hit him, I would have probably been killed. The deer did three thousand dollars damage to my trusty old Ford and gave me a case of whiplash. Since then its been mostly downhill. Not only was my neck damaged again, the inflammation became rampant. I went ahead and celebrated the holidays with traditional food, including three Thanksgiving dinners on different days. Like a lot of people I promised to do better after New Years. That stress filled time and horrible diet really made things a lot worse. Even though I cleaned up my diet and started taking anti-inflammatory supplements, I am still struggling with excruciating pain and weakness in my legs. The doctor thinks he has found the answer, but that's another story.
