Synopsis
Sleep is the one of the most-discussed topics among new parents - because they don't get enough. Most books on helping babies sleep fall into two categories: let them cry it out or simply live with getting up at night. Parent educator Elizabeth Pantley, author of Perfect Parenting, wasn't satisfied with either approach. Her method is based on research into sleep associations and has been tested and proven effective with her own child and a varied group of scores of mothers and babies from across the U.S., Canada, and even Europe. The method will appeal to parents because it does not involve leaving your child to cry himself to sleep. And best of all, it really works. The responses from the test group have been fabulous - children who had been waking up four and five times or more every night began to sleep through - with no crying. This is the long-sought-after answer for sleep-deprived parents who don't want to let their children cry themselves to sleep.

From the Back Cover
"At long last, I've found a book that I can hand to weary parents with the confidence that they can learn to help their baby sleep through the night--without the baby crying it out."
--William Sears, M.D., Author of The Baby Book

"When I followed the steps in this book, it only took a few nights to see a HUGE improvement. Now every night I'm getting more sleep than I've gotten in years! The best part is, there has been NO crying!"
--Becky, mother of 13-month-old Melissa

Pantley is like a best friend who's been there and is full of caring advice to help you and your baby get a good night's sleep. Her ten-step will lead you through the process one day at a time by:

Book Description
A breakthrough approach for a good night's sleep--with no tears

There are two schools of thought for encouraging babies to sleep through the night: the hotly debated Ferber technique of letting the baby "cry it out," or the grin-and-bear-it solution of getting up from dusk to dawn as often as necessary. If you don't believe in letting your baby cry it out, but desperately want to sleep, there is now a third option, presented in Elizabeth Pantley's sanity-saving book The No-Cry Sleep Solution.

Pantley's successful solution has been tested and proven effective by scores of mothers and their babies from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Based on her research, Pantley's guide provides you with effective strategies to overcoming naptime and nighttime problems. The No-Cry Sleep Solution offers clearly explained, step-by-step ideas that steer your little ones toward a good night's sleep--all with no crying.

Tips from The No-Cry Sleep Solution:

Uncover the stumbling blocks that prevent baby from sleeping through the night
Determine--and work with--baby's biological sleep rhythms
Create a customized, step-by-step plan to get baby to sleep through the night
Use the Persistent Gentle Removal System to teach baby to fall asleep without breast-feeding, bottlefeeding, or using a pacifier

It worked for me!, September 4, 2002

If I would have written this review after my first 10 days following the plan it would have been very different. This program is not a quick-fix solution to sleep. But I don't think there is such a thing. Even my friends who do the crying route take a long time to get to all-night sleep. It took 30 days for me, but my baby went from waking up every hour to breastfeed to sleeping 10 hours all night long. I am proud of myself for not giving in to the advice to let him cry to sleep. He's a happy sleeper now, and so am I. I like the format of this book. It's easy to read and follow - a big plus when you are so sleep deprived that you can hardly read a label let alone a book! Some of the other sleep books are very complicated and require too much thought. This one has a menu of ideas that are clearly explained. You can choose as many as apply to you. I am extremely happy with our results from this book. I suggest you look it over and read the excerpts to get a feel for it. I felt connected to the author, her writing style makes it seem like she really cares about you and your baby. And the solutions are practical and they really work.

A must have!!!!, April 12, 2002

I was at my wits end before I got ahold of this revolutionary book. It was hard to think straight or feel like accomplishing anything when I was so tired. After reading through the No Cry Sleep Solution and narrowing down the plan we wanted to follow ,we got started. To be honest, applying the solutions in this book takes a lot of work, and a lot of patience (it may take more than a month or two to see dramatic results). Especially if your son or daughter goes in and out of a lot of "growth spurts" which cause them to be hungry a lot at night (from our experience, those spurts do not occur at exactly 3 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months as some books suggest).

This book includes chapter after chapter of helpful ideas and real-life examples of the practices put to work. It also includes example charts you can use to track nap times, night sleep times, eating times, and of course the times your baby wakes up crying. You also track what methods it takes to get them back to sleep (rocking, hand on chest, pacifier, driving around the block. :-). etc.).

Lastly, you can tell by reading even a portion of this book that Elizabeth is a "real" mom who really cares about babies and their moms and wants to help us go with our instincts on this very tough issue of getting your precious little one to sleep through the night.

Sleep, glorious sleep!!!, April 12, 2004

My baby was waking up every 1-2 hours every night for breastfeeding. EVERY night! I would never ignore his needs but I was going crazy for lack of sleep. I searched everywhere for answers and thank God I found this book. The techniques are common sense and kind to your baby. For one example, from our 8 step plan, we started using a white noise recording, so now the noises of the house don't wake him up. After a month of following our plan according to the directions he now only wakes once a night, twice on a "bad" night. I am a new woman. With sleep my life is right again, and I am a happier new mother. It is definately worth a try! I am telling everyone I know with a baby that for a few dollars and a month of your time you could be sleeping like we are. And your baby doesn't have to scream, and the process can be very loving and gentle. Bravo! Sleep glorious sleep!!!

A beautiful refreshing approach to nurturing your baby to sleep. Thank goodness I found this before the "controlled crying" books. From the minute you start reading the book, you aspire to be the type of mother that Elizabeth clearly is. A mother who nurtures her children, who's personal opinion is that "cry it out" solutions are not only painful for all involved but unnecessary. Although in my experience that is the only advice that you seem to get.

The solutions she presents enables you to gradually train your baby to learn how to sleep. My son Evan went from waking every hour and only being able to go to sleep nursing, to now sleeping 9 to 12 hours straight out. He goes to sleep in his cot at night and in the day, very much awake and laughing and goes to sleep all by himself and I only need to help him if he cries, which is rare and only if he's over-tired.

It does take time, approx one to two months but if you want three day solutions, this isn't the right book. I would recommend this book to any mum desperate for sleep who wants a kind and caring approach and has the patience to allow a gradual improvement.
