I have holes that run along the tonsils, food gets trapped in there and bacteria builds up. Is removal of tonsiles the only option?

Tonsil stones!  by animalgirlsr   7 year 3 of 3 (100%)

The "food particles" you are experiencing are actually called tonsil stones. The medical term is "tonsilloliths". Aside from the foul odor and the annoyance they are harmless. If you plan on having your tonsils removed due to this problem, you should print out this article and bring it to your doctor first.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsilloliths

Doctors commonly misdiagnose these symptoms and believe it to be tonsilitis. I have the same condition and had been lead to believe that I had tonsilitis although the doctor "just can't understand how I could be feeling no pain". My friend's neighbor died due to her tonsillectomy. She began to hemmorhage and did not make it to the hospital in time to stop it before it killed her. This obviously frightened me and I decided to research it a little more. That is when I found that I do not need a tonsillectomy. In fact I also discovered that tonsils play a vital role in the maintaining of my health. They trap bacteria to prevent illness. No wonder I have chunks of bacteria in my tonsils! It simply means that they have been doing their job, and I have overloaded them. If you have this problem you need to clean them out, because as long as they are in there, your tonsils cannot function properly.

Tonsil food particles  by KSW   8 year 1 of 1 (100%)

I to have the same problem, not really knowing how bad my breath was until some very embrassing situations. I have not had my tonsils removed at this time, I have decided to follow a very intense hygene routine. I have a syringe with a flat tip that I use to spray out the tonsil area. I use a flash light to illuminate the area, and actually spray out both sides of the tonsils several times every other day. This appears to work for me. I have not had any embrassing situations with my breath, and I don't experience a foul taste when drinking water or at other times. I actually spray in, around, up and behind the tonsils. The particles usually flow from the hidden pockets. This is now just like the routine of brushing my teeth. If you decide to try it, I hope it works for you too.

tonsil craters  by tiggertac   8 year 1 of 1 (100%)

I have never heard of anyone else having this problem. I thought I was the only one! I found when I drank a lot of coffee with coffeemate, I had this problem. I drink less coffee now, and I haven't noticed the 'craters', but I still have the bad breath. I visited the dentist, and the hygenist said that her husband had bad breath until he had his tonsils removed. This seemed to help him. Sprays will only mask the odor of the material in the 'craters'. It smells really bad. I would really be interested in an answer to the problem.

I had mine removed at aged 21  by Janey444   8 year 2 of 3 (66%)

It was the MOST PAINFULL proceedure I have ever had done. I still get sore throats and still get white pusy craters in the area where my tonsils once were. When they remove your tonsils it doesn't leave a nice smooth area there so I'm not sure it will help your cause.

Also if you sing or do anything where you use your voice alot I found my voice has never been quite the same and becomes very raspy quite often even now.

As for bad breath you can get antibacterial throat sprays which might help. Avoiding milk & cheese help too.

Hope this helps.

Tonsilectomy  by 2and2   8 year 2 of 3 (66%)

I had my tonsils removed when I was 18 for virtually the same reason. I never got infections. I was just always digging that stuff out. It was gross. Sorry, no new ideas. Removal is what helped me :).

Tonsils removed  by topz   8 year 1 of 2 (50%)

Hi,
I had the same problem, pits in my tonsils where food would collect and bacteria would grow resulting in terrible bad breath. I lived with it for 5 years. I would carry around mouth wash, and constantly clean my tonsil area. I finally had my tonsils removed. As an adult, healing from the surgery is tough. It took 11 days before I felt better, and the docs don't like to prescribe enough pain medicine. If you decide to have them taken out, be prepared with someone to take care of you and extra pain medicine. The doctor said getting up and moving around would help, but it didn't. Looking back, I would do it again. I don't have as many colds, nor the terrible taste in my mouth.

Had 'em removed  by mp06011999   4 year 1 of 2 (50%)

I too had food particles getting stuck in my tonsils causing slight constant discomfort and bad breath. It was gross. It was years ago when I had really good insurance (remember those days?). So, I decided to remove the tonsils.

The doc told me that there was a slight chance that I could bleed to death as tonsillectomies were not as safe for adults as children. I was about 28. "Screw it", I said, "let's do it". I had been "milking" the food particles out of my tonsils for months. It was nasty, annoying and just generally not how I wanted to live the rest of my life.

Anyhow, as you can guess the surgery didn't kill me. I'm 41 and have not had a tonsil problem in years. God riddance to 'em. Didn't need 'em anyhow.

And, although I am no fan of dying, had it happened I would have been knocked out anyhow and never known it. We all gotta go sometime. Living with that crap was not an option....and I'm glad I did it.

How important is it to you? Only you know that answer...

Bad breath  by jonaroma   4 year 1 of 2 (50%)

I had fecal breath odor for YEARS. Talked to many doctors who I am sure thought that I was crazy....I finally had a friend who suffers too, send me a eBook he bought 5 or 6 months ago he ask me how his breath smelt and I didn't smell a thing. He said the eBook amongst much else had him stop eating dairy food/ soft drinks and coffee/tea. So I’m like reading it and doing all the stuff it says to do. Thinking this has to be bull. But after a few days my tongue started turning red and felt nice. I worked up the courage to ask a friend how my breath smelt and hes like I don’t smell anything. Now I’m thinking all those years of humiliation and I could have solved it ffs! There a site about it called Badhalitosisbreath. Com. When I read the site I felt sorry for the guy as he clearly had a real tough time with his bad breath, which pretty much ruined his school years. At lest he found a way to beat his bad breath and is letting others know how. Post this every! where to help people!! Thanks

dealing with this at 13  by slycooper501   4 year 1 of 2 (50%)

I've read every answer on this page. I'm glad its here too. I'm A female, 13 and 5'8, yea im tall and ive had so many growth spurts. When i read about the person who used to work with the pediatrician(i think) It fits you know? I hate dealing with these things. Im finally a teen and yea i wanna start kissing and all but i can't do that with bad breath! I've seen all the orabrush commercials and everything. "90% of bad breath comes from bacteria on the tongue" Well not mine.
Alot of the people on here say it cant really hurt you. YES THE HELL IT CAN! I think when i was 11 it happened.
I was in florida visiting family. My throat had been hurting but i ignored it.. until i couldnt even breathe properly. my right tonsil has the crater problem. And it's always been rather large. like i can feel it just by softly touching my neck. When i looked in the mirror i couldn't see the "white things" (what i used to call them) Well what had happened somehow, is my tonsil healed OVER the bacteria and now the bacteria was... idk hurting me somehow. I couldnt breathe, swallow my own saliva, open my mouth, or even eat ice cream without it hurting. And IT HURT i was balling all day.
So my dad finally took me to the emergency room and they gave me strong antibiotics. And it went down fast. I dont remember how but the tonsil re-opened and the bacteria was no longer there and thank god it didnt hurt anymore. The nurse asked if i wanted a shot... Now i was only 11 so bear with me. but i didnt know what the heck a shot could do. but somehow it would prevent it from happening. maybe even heal the tonsil b4 bacteria came back. idk. i dont remember.
but god how i wish i had got that shot
Anyone with this problem should ask your doctor if the shot could help...
Now I get it out every time i sense, see, or feel it. I know its probably not to safe but i have this bobby pin that i un-folded and now every few days when the bacteria is back i put it in mouth wash and softly dig the bacteria out. I've smelled it b4 and YEA IT SMELLS!
I've even found out it was food on my own. One time (when i took out a rather large piece) I put it on a washcloth and let it dry for about an hour. When i came back it was small and a brownish reddish color... MEAT.. not my meat but the food i had eaten.
Trust me I would take any conciquence to have my tonsils removed if this problem went away. It's like a curse. and its not my fault! btu remember im only 13. My parents dont have enough money with this horrible economy(thanx alot bush)

But hopefully ur over this little bump in ur life idk when u posted that question.
p.s. sorry it was so long with all the non-needed stuff i just had to get that out there

37 years old, had a tonsillectomy 5 days ago  by brendricky   4 year 1 of 2 (50%)

I just had my tonsils removed 5 days ago. For the same reason. I called them tonsil rocks. They are horrible smelling and could always tell when one was ready to come out cause I could TASTE it, YUK. I came upon this site and thread when I googled a question about after having my tonsils removed. I do hope I do not get them anymore however, I see that some of you say you still get tonsil rocks even after removal of your tonsils? I sure hope I do not. Tonsil rocks are food and plaque that get caught in the pockets in your tonsils (not everyone has pockets in their tonsils, i called them holes, my dr called them pockets lol) well this food rots, and that is why you get the bad breath and taste in your mouth. And I can not see where it would be healthy to keep your tonsils if you have this problem like i did. I would get very large tonsil rocks, who knows if maybe some of my ailments are from getting ill from swallowing a rotten tonsil rock during the night? I also had a sore throat at least 6 times a year :( Yes the procedure was painful, but here i sit 5 days later and i just ate a croissant ;) (had been able to eat only Jello before today) Some of the scabs are coming off today, and i actually sound like an adult again. To those of you reading this thread trying to figure out what to do..... I'm glad i found this AFTER i had mine removed.

Good Luck!

Remove the food  by #105066   6 year 1 of 2 (50%)

I just saw my doctor and he recommended gargling with Peroxide.
Step1Put one cap-full of 3% hydrogen peroxide into a cup.
Step2Dilute the hydrogen peroxide with one cap-full of warm water.
Step3Pour the mixture into your mouth, but do not swallow.
Step4Swish the liquid around so that it is moved between your teeth. This will kill bacteria on the gums.
Step5Gargle the liquid by tilting your head back, opening your mouth and exhaling out of your throat. This will help to kill the bacteria that cause sore throats.
Step6Prevent swallowing by closing your mouth and continuing to exhale out of your throat as you lower your head over a sink.
Step7Spit all of the liquid into the sink.

Hope this helps someone out there to rid of the food particles.

35 y.o. and I still have that problem...  by wbtaunya   8 year 1 of 2 (50%)

I worked for a pediatrician and she told me that it is called caverous (like caverns) tonsil. From what I remember, when you are young, I think if you go through a big growth spurt and the tonsils end up tearing due to it didnt grow as fast as the rest of your body. I think that is what she said....it has been many yrs ago since I asked her and no longer work there. I have the same probl and what I do and have found out that when I was on the Atkins diet, I had no probl with stuff getting stuck in there. I think it may be a build up of starches in the tiny holes. Since the diet, I have gone back to my prev ways of eating and have noted that I have had probl eversince. I get a flash light and a baby nasal aspirator (the kind that the hosp use with a long tip) and just suck those bad boys out. If I dont do it, they drive me crazy and I end up with a sore throat. I can control my gag reflex pretty well, My husband would throw up if he tried it, he gags just brushing his tongue. Lucky him, he doesnt have our probl. I even thought of maybe squirting some evoo(extra virgin olive oil) on the tinsil to lube it up, what the heck, they say evoo is goood for you anyway.
