For the past six months I've been dealing with Angular Cheilitis.
I thought the sores in the corner of my mouth were from the salty
pretzel snacks. I had to do online research to finally find out
that I do have Angular Cheilitis with sores in the corner of each
side of the mouth which sometimes gets sore or cracks if the
mouth is opened to widely. I've been using a over the counter
medicated balm which helps some.
My research shows that there are many reasons for this condition
such as: HERPES, EARLY STAGES OF HIV, IMPROPER DENTURES, NO TEETH,
OVERLAPPING LIPS, B12 DEFICIENCY.
What is one to do: I have tried a over the counter medicated balm,
have ordered the product Cheilitin from Germany which hasn't arrived
yet. You mix the liquid Cheilitin drops with 15ml of water and drink
this dosage twice daily for up to 20 days and everything will clear up.
Have read some of the messages on this forum about this product and
it doesn't seem to be positive. The product has a money back guarantee,
so if it doesn't work I will get my money back.
I am new on this forum and just joined today. Any feedback on this
ANGULAR CHEILITIS VIRUS if that's what it really is would be very
much appreciated and will keep in touch when the CHEILITIN DROPS
ARRIVE. I just want this Angular Cheilitis to go away soon.
YOUR HEALTH IS PRECIOUS, DON'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED
You may want to watch a short video on Youtube (one minute)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c03YIU3rC8k
If you are dealing with the same problem (angular cheilitis) the video points to a site with a 3 hours free solution.
If it's caused by Cold sores grab some Lysine to stop them and do that anyway because it helps patch up collagen.
Then there's plain old scurvy that can cause mouthsores so some extra Vitamin C
Neither of these things would hurt.
Hi, I have had the same problem for over a week now, and so I did a lot of research and this is what I found:
Supposedly this is a fungal infection, so I went to Walgreen's to get antifungal cream. All I could find was creams for feet, which I didn't want to put on my face, so I bought the Neosporin Antifungal cream for jock itch. For three days I have been using a round cotton pad to clean the affected areas (the corners of my lips and the right side of my upper lip) with a toner that has alcohol in it to clean/disinfect/dry it up [WARNING - IT STINGS - if you are sensitive to pain, skip the toner step - or maybe use hydrogen peroxide, that might not burn so much.]
Then I use a new q-tip every time to out the cream on the q-tip, then with my mouth closed I use my tongue to gently push out the corners of my lips so that I can get the cream all over the little "paper-cut" shaped tears. I do it 3 times a day and by the end of the 2nd day, it was looking a lot better...the dead skin was all flaking off but the "paper cuts" didn't look nearly so deep.
I've also read that Miconazole is used to treat oral fungal infections, so if this doesn't clear up by the time I'm done with the Neosporin (and I'm halfway through the tube...I use a lot each time I guess) I am going to buy that next. This medicine can be found in Monistat (Walgreen's) which is used to clear up a vaginal yeast infection...just be sure to get the box that has the cream not the suppositories. it might be embarrassing to buy it, but I don't care...I'm more embarrassed walking around with these red corners of my lips.
Good luck...keep me posted on how you are doing and what does/doesn't work for you.
If you are otherwise healthy, Angular Cheilitis is tyically caused by drooling while asleep or at least accumulating saliva at the corners of the mouth while sleeping. There it can collect bacteria or yeast, causing redness and splitting at the corners of the mouth. Bet you sleep on your side..... Your doctor or dentist can prescibe NYSTATIN ointment (costs $4 at Walmart and Sam's Club). Apply it to the mouth corners several times a day and at bedtime. Learn to sleep on your back (can't drool or collect saliva while on your back). I suffered for about 6 months until I took this approach. I hate sleeping on my back but have learned to do so. So far - no recurrence. God Luck.
Thank you for this information. This is my 2nd round of this crazy stuff. I had it in the summer and now again. I will definitely try some of your suggestions. I have read that a b12 deficiency can get it started. Any ideas?
I too have angular cheilitis that is exacerbated by the cold weather. I suffer from October through to May. It goes from one side of my mouth to the other and each sore will last for weeks. Although it's a good idea to get checked out, I don't think it's always related to poor health. I am very fit and healthy but do run outside in the cold so think that does contribute.
I think I have found a cure - at least for what I have. Back in October, I bought some Tea Tree Oil at a local pharmacy. This is the pure stuff and has a fairly strong smell. Anyway, Tea Tree Oil does have anti-fungal properties. I mixed it up with a little vaseline and applied it to my lips. The sores went away. Now when I feel them coming on, I apply the tea tree oil several times a day. It can be drying but it does the trick. It's now mid-January and I haven't had an outbreak. This is a first in years.
I've had it 15 years barely controlled to red marks with fungal and cortisone creams!
See my other post, a chemist told me it is too hard to cure as well as doctors.
You have to make it go down to the red marks and be happy with that!
Mine came after cold sores :(
I'm sorry you've suffered so long. I had it for about 10 months and couldn't get it to go away... was during the summer then winter. Finally I decided to stop eating wheat and gluten. It took about 3-7 days to clear up completely and I did nothing more. However... I can't go back to wheat. The health problems it causes when I do now go way beyond cheilitis.
I feel badly that you've suffered for so long and had to share that with you. My dentist thought it was nonsense, but I recently spoke with a doctor who thinks I have celiac, even though I probably can't get a positive test.
I think it's the vitamin deficiency that would be causing the sores in the case of celiac caused cheilitis. I've always taken a B supplement and had a good diet, but when the bowel is not functioning properly nutrients and vitamins cannot be absorbed.
I don't know where it came from but I suffered from constantly reocurring bouts of it in the corner of my mouth for at least a couple of years. Finally went to the doctor who prescribed an anti-fungal cream (He had correctly id'd it as Angular Cheilitis but the cream did Nothing.) I suffered further until I came upon an unrelated article about an oncologist in Rome who believes that many types of cancer are fungal. (google it) For years he's treated and cured early stage cases with a product you likely have in your kitchen.
So I tried it on the sore on my mouth. The product is Sodium Bicarbonate - baking soda. That's it!
I rubbed some on with my finger and left the slightest bit in the sore for a while. It was mostly healed the next day. It hasn't reocurred. That's all I did and a complete cure was the result. It hasn't come back. So whatever stage of sores you have, you have nothing to lose by trying this first. Suffer no more. Smile again easily!
A person and his associates who have been calling themselves the Angular Chelitis (spelled incorrectly intentionally) Foundation have been selling a little ebook on how to solve this problem. I bought this book some time ago and it wiped out my mouth sores very fast after suffering for 2 months. So I thought the money I paid was worth it and so out of gratitude I haven't revealed the info in any discussion groups. However, they've been selling this home remedy for about five years now and I think that's enough time to make their money. So in my own words, with some modifications, I'm going to reveal the solution here. (This is the internet so it had to come out sooner or later.)
You'll need *concentrated* dish washing soap (i.e., Palmolive), a new jar of white petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline), and paper towels. You'll also need two washing bowels. I bought some plastic ones from Safeway.
1. Floss and brush your teeth. Clean out your mouth.
2. Disinfect your hands especially under your finger nails with the soap.
3. Disinfect your wash area, whether it's your kitchen or your bathroom counter. You could use a disinfectant cleaner or the soap you bought.
4. Disinfect your wash bowels with the soap and then fill both of them with *warm* water.
5. Get a small clean plate and pour a little soap on it and put it next to one of the wash bowels.
6. Disinfect your hands again (see above).
7. Go to the first wash bowel and wipe some water over your lips, especially the cuts for a few seconds.
8. Take the soap from the plate and gently rub the soap into the cuts and around the mouth for about a minute. Close your mouth tight because soap obviously shouldn't get inside your mouth. You shouldn't swallow soap. If it gets in your mouth, no problem, just rinse your mouth and begin anew.
9. Go to the second bowel and clean the soap off.
10. Take the paper towels and dry your mouth. Every time you dab your mouth, use one towel at a time. BTW, if you have to rinse your mouth, go ahead.
11. Let your sores dry (five/ten minutes or longer). A little warning, when you look in the mirror, your sores are going to be red and wide open so it's not going to look too pretty. Don't worry about this for now.
12. Take the unused jar of white petroleum jelly and and wipe it around on the cuts and around your lips, under the nose, and on your chin. Although white petroleum jelly wasn't made to be eaten, it's okay if it gets in your mouth and tiny bit gets swallowed. Remember petroleum is already a major ingredient in lip protectors such as Vaseline Lip Therapy.
13. Two hours later, wipe off the jelly with paper towels. *Wash the jelly off by using the steps above.*
14. Let dry for 10 to 20 minutes and see if the sores shrink. If they do, you're on the road to recovery. By the time you wake up next morning, the inflammation should be down as the normal healing process will take over. **If your sores haven't shrunk, reapply the jelly and wait an hour or two and remove it again.**
Explanations. The formulator of this remedy (his son had Angular Cheilitis for 3 years) found out through his research in medical journals that fungal bacterias cannot live in dry conditions. It needs moisture to survive. (This is true, I myself checked abstracts through Google Scholar.) The soap kills and dries the infection in the wound. The jelly, a water repellent, which is placed over the dry wound, traps the bacteria in dry prison thus extinguishing it.
The originator of this home remedy suggests for hard luck cases, you may need to this multiple times such as once a day for a few days or four times in one day. Work what's best for you.
For myself, scar tissue/new skin started to form over my wounds which lasted a week. I continued to be careful how I ate your food. I cut my food into little pieces, avoided acid-like foods such as tomatoes and oranges, consumed smoothies with a straw.
If this works for you, forward this information to anyone who needs help.
EDIT: One person who tried this said that although the treatment did rid her infection, new skin inside the lesion was slow to form. So she used 1% hydrocortisone cream and everything was healed in three days -- even though the cream was useless when she first used it to treat her cuts. However, I suspect it's a matter of timing. Hydrocortisone cream increases blood circulation in the skin to help heal the wound (less blood flow prevents healing). But the cream isn't what you need when the infection is the main problem. Eliminate the infection first then use hydrocortisone. Note: don't use hydrocortisone cream on open cuts. Let some skin tissue form over it first.
SECOND EDITS: I think it was a mistake to mention that after the treatment I didn't apply ointment or lubricant to my lips. (I've deleted this remark.) A person who wrote me said his lips became cracked when he did this. Actually it's probably best to regularly clean (especially after each meal) the cuts with water and hydrogen peroxide and then apply Neosporin to the cuts. Use pure petroleum jelly (you can also buy them in small tubes instead of a jar) for the rest of the lips. When the cuts are healed, apply to entire lip with the jelly for about a month because drying out the mouth could rip open the cuts again.
Another person who wrote me said he went further and actually applied Band Aids to his cuts when he was sleeping. He said this accelerated the healing. I would suggest being careful about how long in leaving the band aid on your face because the adhesive could leave a rash. I would suggest using the "Sheer" Band Aids.
I just want to thank you for posting the treatment. I too suffered for two months, trying antifungal and antibiotic creams and nothing worked. It would be another 3 months before I could get into a dermatologist and I feared my general practioner would only recommend the creams which I had already tried unsuccessfully. Initially I was a little skeptical of the ACF website you mention especially since they were asking for money. But a few days ago I had started getting desperate and was about to send them my money when I found your post. The treatment made a huge improvement after only the first try and two days later it is almost completely healed. I'm still applying a little hydrocortisone plus antifungal a few times a day just to be safe. I can't thank you enough!
Hey, I'm glad it worked. BTW, I made further edits to my message. I hope this helps people. There's just too many people suffering over this problem to ask them to pay $70.
Well, Im sitting here with vasoline smeared all over my face praying that this "cure" works. I noticed the right corner of my mouth getting very dry about a week and a half ago. About four days ago, the corner of my mouth started to crack. Today I have three pretty big paper-cut-like cracks on the right corner of my mouth that make it damn near impossible to eat or smile comfortably.
I live in hawaii and run alot. I think the combination of sweat, heat and chapped lips resulted in a case of angular chelitis.
I came across this page today. Up until now I have been smearing neosporin and lotrimin on the infected area with NO improvement at all.
Good gosh almighty I hope this new strategy works...
Please tell us of your progress. And if people who've tried this could relate their experiences and give some help it could help tonyjablony and anyone else trying this treatment. Although I wrote the "cure" post above, I'm limited to my own experience and the experiences of the few who've emailed me. When someone types in "Angular Cheilitis" in Google, this thread now appears in the second page of the search results. So the world is watching!
I think it's working! I did the angular chelitis "treatment" described above twice last night. Washed with palmolive, thoroughly dried, applied vasoline for 2 hours, wiped off and repeated. Went to bed with a dab of vasoline covered with a band aid.
This morning the corner of my mouth was still dry and felt tight but the cuts were almost totally faded and the color was much improved.
I think you might be on to something here.
I washed with palmolive again this morning after taking a shower, dried and now I have a dab of neosporin covered by a bandaid to hopefully take care of the cuts on the corner of my mouth once and for all. Things are looking much better than they did a day or two ago. I will keep you posted.
Hey tony, sounds promising so far. Because you've suffered the cuts only for a short while, you probably have a good chance of healing faster than most. Your skin's natural moisture from your lip corner should return eventually. Meanwhile continue to cover the corner (and the rest of your lips) with Neosporin and Vaseline until it does. Yes, please report any updates. I'm sure many people reading it will be greatful for it.
Well thats it folks! My angular chelitis is cured. The treatment above def. works. I only needed to do it for one day. The last few days my skin has been a little red and felt tight but no cuts and I don't think anyone but me could have possibly noticed that anything was out of the ordinary. I just kept putting on lotion and/or neosporin to aid with the healing/moisturizing. Today (maybe 4-5 days after finding this website) I am 100% back to normal.
Before I found this cure for angular chelitis I was about to freak right the hell out. I had never heard of angular chelitis and had no clue why the corner of my mouth decided to go postal on me. I found a lot of websites with people saying they have suffered for years. I can't imagine. I had it for about a week and was going crazy trying to find something to make it go away.
I can only speak for myself but, for me, following the instructions above worked like a charm. Thank you for posting this BOHEMIATOM and good luck to anyone else who stumbles across this page like me.
I've been suffering from this for over 10 years!! People kept telling me it was cold sores or herpes... and I still can't believe how rude people are when they see the red marks around your mouth. I've received comments like "Looks like someone needs to get you some chapstick" "What's with the herpes?"
It got so bad in high school that for a few days, both corners of my mouth had quarter size wounds. It was awful.
I'm so happy to read of this remedy. I'm going out of town this weekend, but I can't wait to get back to try it! I'm also getting married in a year and one of my worst fears was to have an outbreak during the wedding! Can you imagine the pictures??
God bless you for sharing this info! I'll keep you posted on my progress!
