I am very interested in doing The Master Cleanse (my body needs it desperately!), but I am having a difficult time with the availability of maple syrup. I am in Chile right now, and will be here for the next 5 months, and have been unable to find maple syrup. I've checked everywhere, natural food stores etc., and no one knows what maple syrup is. Is it possible to substitute the maple syrup for something else such as honey or perhaps another type of syrup. There is a syrup available that is from palm trees. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
An ideal formula involves freshly extracted juice from the sugar cane (readily available in India, but not
generally in the US at the present time):
10 oz. Fresh sugar can juice (medium hot or cold)
2 Tablespoons fresh lime or lemon juice
1/10 teaspoon cayenne (red pepper) or to taste
Another possible but lesser replacement could be pure sorghum. (Do not use for Diabetes). It does not
produce equal or close to the benefits of maple syrup.
ok I feel now that we should conquer this problem for all Chileans! I too want to do the cleanse and can not find any Maple syrup anywhere, does anyone have any ideas? The Master Cleanse book state it CAN NOT be substituted as it provide the minerals and calories your body needs. I also researched the recommended organic shop in Santiago but had no luck.
The maple syrup actually is the "SUBSTITUTE"as the "original" Master Cleanse was made with sugar cane juice but because it is not readily available in the states Stanley then used Maple syrup. In many Latin American and Caribiean countries sugar cane juice is quite common. I can only speak for the Cuban name for it which is "guarapo" and it's commonly found in South Florida's Cuban communities.
I found it in the states in an international farmers market with a large Indian population but it was too far to drive and too expensive. Sugar cane juice does not keep even refrigerated for more than one day at best so you have to have it fresh made daily. The one thing I will say is that I like the taste muuuuuch better than the maple syrup and specially using limes instead of lemons. To bad that it was so expensive and sucha far drive for me.
Check around maybe you find it's also common in Chile.BTW if you read the section in the book for diabetics you'll find that Molasses is an acceptable substitute and it has beaucoup minerals and lots of iron. The spanish name I know for Molasses is "Melao de Caña".
Just one week back i came off my 10 days Master Cleanse and nothing felt better in my life than doing the master cleanse. I am from Bangalore, India and here we can find Sugercane juice available so i did the cleanse with it. I NEVER felt too hungry and too weak.
So i wanna make this totally official that sugercane lemonade works too gudd :D
Btw it was darn too much difficult as my frenz and cousins have the Dominos Pizza and KFC chicken all the time. And they force u to eat it too. BUT PLEASE NEVER GIVE UP. For all the 10 days, there was a big strong man in my head telling me every single secon "Gunu...Noway man !!...u're not eating this...just 10 days..that's it !!" After my 3rd day I never even wanted to eat the nice smelling food (Altho ima food junkie!) and from the 5th day, i started challenging myself by smelling nice and long on the foods. BUT I NEVER ATE IT. Ofcourse i wanted to eat, but I DIDNT. This actually brought the stron willed guy out of me and i believe this stron willed person is there in everyone.
For all the things happened during these 10 best days, I also kind of realized how much junk we eat and how often.
As per the question now, yes the sugarcane works perfect. But I dont know how many of you guys know is that the climate here is not very good to keep the outside/roadside sugarcane juice without any diseases. That is why I am researching a bit so that we can do it with something very readily available throuhout the globe. Only one thing in my mind that it should be very natural, and made by least human intervention.
Sorry for the long message guys, but hope it helps if you read the whole. Please suggest or comment on what I shared.
