Im bummin...I just found out a few weeks ago that I have an umbilical hernia. It bothers me when I do too much and Im a very active physical person. Haven't been able to work in 2 weeks.
Surgeon says I should have it operated on and I'm terrified to go into a hospital for one and anesthesia for another.
I see that you already posted at the Hernia forum. Good for you. Maybe you will find support for that kind of hernia.
I posted there when I was about to have surgery for an inguinal hernia. Two posters gave me detailed description of everything, from surgery to recovery. I'm such a worry wart. That helped immensely.
I was all bummed out. I only do alternative health care. I hated that I could do nothing about this. Everyone said that nothing could be done other than surgery. The doctor said that it had to be done. Otherwise the intestines could come through the muscle, be strangled, and fatal. So, don't wait. Get it done. You don't know how much I hate saying that. I had not been to a doctor for over 15 years. I had never taken any pharmaceutical ever. I'm normally very good with pain; but this was very bad. Your hernia may be very different since it is in a much different location. I do hope someone will respond to you.
Otherwise try not to stress so much. Find a good surgeon who has done this many times before. My operation only lasted 40 minutes. The anesthesia was the scariest part. I agree with you there. But, thank goodness, I remember nothing.
if there is one thing doctors can do, its mend flesh. the anesthesia bothers me too. those fluoridated drugs are very dangerous. set them straight. you want to be awake and you dont want fluoridated drugs. it should not hurt to have regular valium once. i can hear the gasp! did trapper say that? well, yes. i have had my share of diazepam before and there is no better muscle relaxant around. you dont want to be fighting them while they are working. but nothing fancy - no fluoridated drugs or spinal taps. if the anesthesiologist is good with epidurals, that may be all you need. just make sure they understand you dont want to be put out. you will feel what they are doing, just not feel any pain associated with it.
in surgery, your life is in the hands of the anesthesiologist. his bill reflects that. find one you can work with. dont let them pull a switch on you at the last minute and try to bully you. doctors can be so elitist. YOURE the one getting cut on and paying the bill.

I did see a really nice and reassuring surgeon yesterday. He suggested either general anesthesia or a epidural. I was leaning toward the epidural but that scares the BEGEZIZ out of me as well. When I had my kids I went totally au natural not wanting to be jabbed in the spinal cavity. I dont know why they cant give me a good sleeping potion either Trapper instead of genaral.
I am sceduled for March 24th. I may move it up. We had to pull my son out of the public school system as it bites the big banana and he just started at a great Quaker school and needs to be driven. The good doctor said it was no problem to wait until his spring break in March. I hate it tho...I can't do any of the farm chores Im used to doing easily. frustrating.

Can't they just give you a shot? NOT in the spine? and then they could put one of those cup things around your head (ya know, like they put on dogs when they have a boo-boo)..so you can't LOOK!!!! :)
Anything below the waist can be local (epidural). I prefer the epidural, always have done it this way or if possible something else local. I have done a D&C with a local novacaine.
They need a doctor to do an epidural, though for anes.. you can get a nurse. I had to be very determned to get my way, because it easier for them to schedule a special trained nurse.
would you mind re-explaining your situation...I'm a little confused. You preferred the nurse? I was leaning toward the epidural but that scares the heck out of me. I guess I have to know that they do those for women daily in child birth.
I had an epidural done when I had my partial hysterectomy, back in 2005. It was the first time, when I had my son, it was au-naturale and when I had my tubes tied, it was with anesthesia. I liked the epidural, I was not as groggy, although they did also give me something so that I was not awake.
As mentioned the doctor gave me the epidural. Then, a nurse or intern gave me the drug to go to sleep. When I woke in the recovery room, I was able to go to my room, when my toes wiggled. LOL I thought I got them to move a few times, they felt like it!...but it was still much quicker than with the anestethic.
the epidural is given next to the spinal cord. a spinal goes right in the spinal cord. yes, they have lots of practice so it is relatively safe. what the medicine is that they use for an epi, i dont know. sounds like fluoridated meds to me(pass through the barrier more easily.)
ask, ask, ask questions. not knowing can make you more fearful and that can enhance pain. also lay off the vit c and selenium and Iodine for a few days before. they will make you need more meds to be effective.
for being so kind in your responses. I will ask ask ask Trapper. I am moving up the surgery date as I just want to get it over with and have had wonderful family support to help taxi my son to school.
I prefer epidural and they use a MD. You also don't feel groggy afterwards. Some people get a headache because they sit up too fast when they are back in their room. Keep you head flat for a while. When I got back in my room I already could wiggle my toes.
I also used the epidural 30 years ago with tubeligation, besides when I had my 2 kids.
I feel it also keeps the doctors on their toes, since you are not completely gone.
Though they do give you some medication that makes you feel sleepy, some people need that, my doctor said because they are very nervous, I am the opposite I find it interesting.
My MD let me look through the instrument with the tubeligation, but I had trouble focusing my eyes :)
