What is the pH of the notoriously clean, distilled water? If you know anything about distillers, or own one (like I do), then read on.
Since the dawn of time there has been distillation in nature and it continues each and every day. The term we know it by is the Hydrologic Cycle. The Hydrologic Cycle (also called the water cycle) is the process that moves water around the earth. The cycle starts with the sun heating water in our rivers, lakes and oceans and turning it into water vapor which rises into the air (called evaporation). When water vapor cools it forms clouds (condensation) which become heavy with water and rains back to earth (precipitation). Nature knows best and nature supplies distilled water in the form of rain. However, rain water is no longer pure due to atmospheric pollution. Have you ever seen the color of rain water that has been collected in a bucket? The yellow tint it has is due to the slightly acidic pH level, which is usually around 5.6, because carbon dioxide and water in the air react together to form carbonic acid, a weak acid. The extra acidity in rain comes from the reaction of air pollutants; primarily sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, with water in the air to form strong acids (like sulfuric and nitric acid). The main sources of these pollutants are vehicles and industrial and power-generating plants.
With that being said, people have turned to in-home distillers to duplicate the process. Distilled water is water that has been boiled in an apparatus called a “still” and then recondensed in a cooling unit (”condenser”) to return the water to the liquid state. Some of the higher-end models use a charcoal filter to remove any remaining gases. The boiling action kills bacteria and other micro-organisms, and contaminants are left behind in the boiling chamber. The effectiveness of distillation is over 99+% (99.99% removal has been achieved even on ocean water–over 35,000 P.P.M).
Now with that explanation understood, distilled water will test out in a range of pH 5.5-5.8. The reason is that distilled water dissolves carbon dioxide from the air. It dissolves carbon dioxide until it is in dynamic equilibrium with the atmosphere. That means that the amount being dissolved balances the amount coming out of solution. The total amount in the water is determined by the concentration in the atmosphere. The dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with the water and finally forms carbonic acid.
Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body. Dr. Theodore Baroody, in his book “Alkalize or Die”, offers a list of symptoms that may be precipitated by Acidosis:
Beginning Symptoms: 1. Acne 2. Agitation 3. Muscular pain 4. Cold hands and feet 5. Dizziness 6. Low energy 7. Joint pains that travel 8. Food allergies 9. Chemical sensitivities or odors, gas, heat 10. Hyperactivity 11. Panic attacks 12. Pre-menstrual and menstrual cramping 13. Pre-menstrual anxiety and depression 14. Lack of sex drive 15. Bloating 16. Heartburn 17. Diarrhea 18. Constipation 19. Hot urine. 20. Strong smelling urine 21. Mild headaches 22. Rapid panting breath 23. Rapid heartbeat 24. Irregular heartbeat 25. White coated tongue 26. Hard to get up 27. Excess Head mucus 28. Metallic taste in mouth
I am not a fan of distilled water...I used to drink filtered tap water but after testing that and finding the pH about 6.5 I stopped drinking that too. I drink my tap water now, which I have had tested and it proves to be a good source of water and the pH is between 7-7.5. However, I do allow it to sit in a glass jug with magnesium oxide solids and that boosts the pH to about 9-9.5. This water tastes great and by allowing it to sit out much of the chlorine dissipates. Flouride is not used in my tap water.
However, most cannot trust their water source, if one must filter or distill then adding back electrolytes & other trace elements is a must. Grzbear, has a nice method of restructuring his water, take a look.
This is a support forum for Distilled water , designed specifically to be able to discuss its health benefits without the unscientific biased assaults on something many have found over the years to be very beneficial in spite of the propaganda put out by uninformed studies or biased misinformation released to the general public through sellers of water purifiers or over priced reconstructed or manipulated waters that have no better results then some tap waters ! The myths are ludicrous and show the lack of knowledge about water I hope moderation is capable of removing or deleting these anti distilled water posts and do with them what they wish ,but they do not belong in a support forum!
That's good. Ban all the other information about distilled water, then nobody but you and the other proponents of distilled water won't have to discuss the good, or bad.
The way you're carrying on, one might think that maybe you have an agenda pro distilled water that isn't evident to the forum.
BTW, speaking of unbiased unscientific data, I noticed you haven't offered any with regard to distilled water.
Here's another point of view by somebody that doesn't sell water purifiers, and I am sure that you can find more on the internet.
My post wasn't meant to undermine distilled water, but to see the other side of the issue. What is it that you are afraid of?
Early Death Comes From Drinking Distilled Water
During nearly 19 years of clinical practice I have had the opportunity to observe the health effects of drinking different types of water. Most of you would agree that drinking unfiltered tap water could be hazardous to your health because of things like parasites, chlorine, fluoride and dioxins.
Many health fanatics, however, are often surprised to hear me say that drinking distilled water on a regular, daily basis is potentially dangerous.
Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970's when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.
Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapor condensed. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them.
Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time).
Fasting using distilled water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.
Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, "Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact.
Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water."
The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. cola beverages and other soft drinks) are made from distilled water. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine.
The more mineral loss, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.
A growing number of health care practitioners and scientists from around the world have been advocating the theory that aging and disease is the direct result of the accumulation of acid waste products in the body.
There is a great deal of scientific documentation that supports such a theory. A poor diet may be partially to blame for the waste accumulation. Meats, sugar, white flour products, fried foods, soft drinks, processed foods, alcohol, dairy products and other junk foods cause the body to become more acidic. Stress, whether mental or physical can lead to acid deposits in the body.
There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (distilled water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood.
The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state. I have done well over 3000 mineral evaluations using a combination of blood, urine and hair tests in my practice. Almost without exception, people who consume distilled water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies.
Those who supplement their distilled water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as adequately nourished in minerals as their non-distilled water drinking counterparts even after several years of mineral supplementation.
The ideal water for the human body should be alkaline and this requires the presence of minerals like calcium and magnesium.
Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of distilled water is a bad idea.
... Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of distilled water. Avoid it except in special circumstances.
Ignorence of the rules is no excuse! This DEBATE has been going on for quite sometime thts why we have debate fourms! You can cut and paste all the misinformation you want on them!
The Ignorance is yours. Not only in the spelling of the word, but that you think just because an opposing view to yours is a debate. The reader can decide for themselves.
Where exactly did I address you in a debate? Before my post, and your reply, I wasn't aware that you even existed.
BTW, you still haven't provided any evidence that what I posted was misinformation, rather than just information.
The more you post, the more you sound like a seller of water distillers who might lose a customer if they read something other than what you think is the gospel regarding water.
I can't recommend your post the normal way because that privilage has been taken away from me for disagreeing with the moderators, But it doesn't stop me from doing it in print. Great post.
You hit the nail on the head. There must be some motive like money to keep people from posting opposing ideas, or information.
Did you notice that (not)_2sirius never answered any of the questions posed to him/her about "agenda", what was misinformation?
You are also right about the VWT forum moderators. One of them "Trapper" said he bought his forum. Then he puts up a cyber shingle "Ask Trapper", like he knew anything. He's the same guy that told me once on the Colloidal Silver forum that facts don't matter.
Something definitely smells on the CZ forums, but if these people want to live with one side of the story, and not ask for the other side of the story, they deserve everything they get.
CZ is a clique that want to direct readers to whatever their agenda is. A total joke.
They ejected Spdina for asking questions they didn't like, and I suppose I'm next, but it doesn't matter. Who loses not me, I have contributed as much or more that I got from this forum.
Baiting is against posting rules also and the moderators understand passive agression is just another form of it! My objective was to get your unsupportive debatable post out of a support forum ! I am not on a mission, I am not trying to establish my authority on any issue and people can take the information and do what they please with it, unlike you I have no agenda to prove my self rightiousness!
Nor do I care what the ubiquitis newcomers who try to discredit others think! People like you are a dime a dozen around here, Spdy1!
I feel that my post and InCharge's original post were supportive in that they offered advice that was meant for those using filtered or distilled water. I think it is YOUR behavior in YOUR response that is troll-like, but since I am in a good mood, I will let this insult go and not make a fuss over it. Perhaps you are just in a bad mood today and looking for a fight. If that is the case, I won't be entertaining you because as I said, I am in a good mood today.
Having watched this thread unfold and having
seen what was later edited and hidden by the
poster you appear to be defending, I would
say that 2Sirius's posts were totally appropriate,
and so defend what he has to say based on what
the thread looked like originally.
Thanks Zoe!
This thread was a farce and my deletion of posts from it was to disassociate myself from the loonytoon Speedy and her many user names and her continuous badgering begging pleading and feigning innocents ! Many will not realize this thread originated in the "Distilled Water SUPPORT forum"! But any one who knows Spidena knows her obsession with debating, trolling and baiting in the Support Forums !~ In fact Spirit the Webmaster had spedina banished from the support forums because of this, leaving her to exist only in the Debate Forums ,thus her reincarnation to mia deardren giving her access to the support forums and to once again break posting guidlines !
If people have a problem with this then they have a problem with the posting guidelines!
