Wow. I am really surprised at you. Not that I haven't gotten more love from my dog then all the men in my life rolled into one....but there is a tone to that little quip that is really, really sexist, as with the weenie little responses it generated.
The fact that it generated an "R" gives Curezone a black eye, too.
What can I say - my 76 year old auntie sent it to me. Yes it is sexist, but a joke is something that pokes fun and is not to be taken as a serious suggstion, don't you think?
Yes and no. Even grandmas and aunties can perpetuate sexist ideas. I believe the the power of words...and what we choose to think is funny shows where our heads are at...deep down. Is it funny if humor hurts someone? Most of those funny home videos of people getting hurt...leave me cold. So does humor that perpetuates sexist ideas.
I have a good sense of humor...but many times I don't laugh when others do. I remember that movie about the coke bottle...(can't remember the name of it) and when the outback tribesmen puzzled over the bottle and did strange things with it...I was silent while the whole theater roared. I thought their innocense was charming, not laughable. But when the movie showed the scenes of modern day life (in comparision) I roared at the frantic absurdity of it while the whole theatre was silent.
..."The God's Must Be Crazy"...I loved that
movie too. Worthy of a college curriculum on
why it was funny and why it was NOT funny.
Similarly, the joke posted by DQ was funny
and also, as you noted, not funny. That it
was posted in the Jokes forum made it
appropriate, although perhaps, one door
over in the Relationship forum it may not
have gone over very well.
The truth is that no matter who you put in
the trunk, the reality is that the dog
would have been happier to see you, even
if you were politically correct and put NO
ONE in the trunk with the dog, the dog would
have still been happy to see you. That is
the great thing about dogs, they are very
unconditionally loving.
It is interesting to me, since I have heard
a gazillion jokes over the years, to see
what makes people laugh. I have decided that
jokes are one of the currencies of "intimacy".
In this joke, for me, it was not about the
woman in the trunk part, since if a woman
were telling it, she would have put the
husband in the trunk...it was about the loyalty
of a dog. On a bad day, my oldest brother will
fume and say all he needs is his truck and his
dog. This does not mean that he does not love
his wife. He adores her, and she, him. The
truth is that she IS treated better than the
dog. The dog however is always ON and never
lets him down. He expects nothing from the dog,
well, not to pee in the house, and the dog always
wants to go with him whereas his wife often has
other things to do. Anyway, dog jokes are
popular with men and probably that I laughed
at this one means I like men and dogs and also
know its the truth that 15 minutes in a trunk
is 14 minutes and 52 seconds too long for a woman.
Yeah, and it is also funny that any man could
get a woman in a trunk...ggg.
