I e-mailed Mountain Rose Herbs about how to use oregano essential oil since their web site carries a warning about putting it directly on the skin or ingesting it undiluted. Their web site also says not to let it come in contact with the mucous membranes undiluted.
This was their response to my e-mail:
"Oregano Essential Oil should never be used directly, it is extremely potent, it should always be diluted in other oils. One or two drops in a few cups of a carrier oil would be a good idea, following a recipe would be a good way to start. You can always put it in a diffuser to fill the room with the scent."
I am not crazy about the scent so, taking their guidelines into consideration, can anyone recommend possible uses of oregano essential oil?
I use oregano e.o. in my water. I distill my water and put in a few drops of oil and drink it.
I have used it *undiluted* and do not suggest that on my skin tags and as a 'peel' on my face. I looked sunburned! Also, my skin tags itched extremely. I would do the 'peel' and tags again with a carrier oil of apricot or olive oil.
In a bath, I have put the oregano oil. I have two bottles now because I misread something (that is another story :0)) so the one bottle which is pure oregano, I put in my water and have done in the bath. The one which is in grapeseed oil, I use for my bath now...a few drops. I do not like the flavor of the grapeseed oil to put it in my water.
If you use the oil in the bath, put it in after the bath water is filled and then swirl around in the water. Also, do not put many drops in, it can, ummm, 'sting/burn' your private area.
There is many other uses I just cannot think of them right now. Maybe someone will pop in and give you the list that I have read on here before.
You can add OO to a tablespoon of oil and swish it around your mouth. It is like a broad spectrum antibiotic, and will kill any bacteria and infections in your mouth. You will also absorb it sublingually into your system. It's a very efficient vehicle for taking it internally.
I add it to my bath, but you have to be very very careful. A few drops too much, and sensitive body parts will not be happy...at all!
Absolutely it would. You only use a drop or two in a tablespoon of oil.
The first time I got Oil of Oregano, I had heard about it, heard it was very strong, but no experience. I opened the bottle and took a whiff...hmm, smells sort of strong.
My husband walked in and asked what I had. I said it was OO. He said, wow, that must taste pretty good, after all oregano is good, right? The man opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue. I shook the bottle over his tongue.
I swear, I didn't mean to use my husband as a test monkey. I knew this oregano was different, and not what you put in Italian dishes. But he was just standing there, with his tongue out...what could I do?
The poor guy. He said it was worse than burning your tongue. It was worse than the hottest pepper. He literally started pouring stuff on his tongue over the sink. Any liquid he could find actually. Then he was just hopping around screaming some pretty bad words.
It took A LONG time before I could get him to use it in Oil Pulling. Now I can't get him to stop.
It's like nature's broad spectrum antibiotic, and should be used as such. Not for long term use, no matter the delivery system. It's amazing stuff, really!
I was re-reading what Mt. Rose Herbs wrote, and they seem to recommend diluting it in a few cups of oil. Can you give me any references to recommendations for oil-pulling with oregano oil?
Take a tablespoon of Organic, Unrefined Sesame Oil. Add a drop or two of Oil of Oregano. Insert into mouth and swish around for as long as you can go, up to 20 minutes.
Spit out.
The should be thinned out, but if not, don't worry.
Could a drop of oregano oil be added to a few cups of a carrier oil and used as a spray on the skin to treat athlete's foot? If so, can sunflower oil be used as a carrier oil? I don't know what is commonly used as a carrier oil.
Jojoba is the closest thing to the oil production of the skin.
Sesame is anti-bacterial.
Sunflower is benign.
Coconut is anti-viral.
Stay away from Peanut, Canola or Soy.
My suggestion? Sesame. Sesame is what the Ayurvedics consider the best oil.
Bathe in Oil of Oregano. If it's antifungal you want, try a bath in Epsom Salts , Sea Salt , Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, and a few drops (very few) of Oil of Oregano and Lavender. I cured my husband of not only a terrible foot fungus, but bad breath with this bath. Foot fungus is a sign of a systemic problem. His breath and foot issues were interconnected. Rub a clove of garlic on your foot, and you will taste it in our mouth in a short amount of time. Your feet are a DIRECT link to your body. One of the most direct delivery systems you have. So a foot infection will affect the rest of you. That is why you should wear shoes as little as possible. They need to breathe. No one thinks about the feet in relation. But you need to!!
So, please take that athlete's foot fungus very seriously. It's not an isolated condition. Okay?
This bath will very effectively kill all that fungus. Also read below. Patchouli oil is amazing also. There are so many essential oil that can do what you want. Go to Nature's Gifts and read about them. You will have what you want with the oils, believe me.
HELICHRYSUM Essential Oils
(Italian Everlasting, Immortelle) Helichrysum Italicum Corsica, Certified Organic, blossoms
The steam distilled oil of the Italian Everlasting is one of the strongest anti-inflammatories I know. I use it in all my skin blends, and have been known to use it neat on bad bruises . The fragrance is warm, slightly honey like, rich and buttery, with green notes of wood, spices, herb. It is a fascinating oil because it is made up of several layers of notes that appear to unfold during the dry down.
Helichrysum is antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal . It is a component of my anti-acne blends, as well as useful in any rash or skin irritation (blended with German Chamomile CO 2 it gives amazing results!).
The literature and the aromatherapy lists are full of anecdotal evidence of Helichrysum Italicuum's amazing power when used on broken bones , stories of doctors being amazed that the break healed in half the estimated time, etc.
My personal experience is that it can fade bruises almost overnight, turning an angry new bruise to one that looks like a week old almost healed bruise while I slept. It acts by having the blood reabsorbed into the tissue, thus removing the discoloration and the pain caused by pressure on the nerves.
According to Dr. Christoph Streicher, Helichrysum is useful in treating heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat and risk of stroke. Blended with Ylang Ylang it is useful in treating high blood pressure. Dr. Streicher, along with many other authorities, also states that Helichrysum, in a base of Rose Hip Seed Oil will fade older scars.
Any blend created for arthritis, bruising, or scarring needs Helichrysum. One client writes that it is very effective in easing the pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. She applies a weak dilution when the pain starts, and within about 10 minutes the pain is gone for hours. (Not sure that relieving the pain and continuing the same activities that caused the pain is wise, but that is a matter of personal choice.)
Read the comments of several of our clients who have used either our Helichrysum essential oil or our Helichrysum hydrosol on this special Helichrysum Healing page.
Mentally, it is very supportive and comforting. It is believed by some to open the right side of the brain and improve creativity as well as increase dream activity. I also use it in a meditation blend to encourage spirituality and personal growth.
Again, according to Dr. Streicher, emotionally it can help an individual get in touch with unresolved feelings, emotions that have been denied and/or buried. It is also helpful in restoring memories that have been buried deep in the past. Dr. Streicher recommends it in psychotherapy to aid a patient in dealing with emotions. It helps release defense mechanisms and offers comfort in processing these emotional traumas. A client who is a psychotherapist uses a blend of Helichrysum and Jasmine Sambac for helping her clients deal with their pasts.
This oil can have very profound spiritual and emotional effects .It is considered by some to be one of the 'sacred' oils.
There are other species of Helichrysum. It is grown in several different countries. In the past we have offered others. We no longer do so, because even though the price is lower, and we can pass the savings on to you, we have not found that any Helichrysum, other than Corsican, offers the amazing healing benefits of true Corsican Helichrysum Essential Oil.
