How should I measure the old Lugol'sIodine to be equivalent to 1 tablet of Iodoral (50mg)?
Is there a proper way to measure 1 full drop of Lugol's? I remember it was to place the dropper horizontally and allow 1 full drop.
Currently, I have Selenomethionine at 200 mcg per capsule, how much should be taken to balance Lugol's at 50mg?
I'm trying to help my wife, who has a 23mm nodule at the thyroid. She's been taking 10 drops of the old Lugol's and Selenomethionine at 200 mcg daily, for the past 3 months. The single nodule becomes smaller at times, and gets bigger after a few days. It's been like that on and off for 3 months, but doesn't seem to be larger than 23mm though.
Would really appreciate some help from members here.
Thank you.
ps : her biopsy is normal (non-malignant), hormones and iodine levels are normal. My wife does experience occasional fatigue, constipation and low blood pressure.
2 Horizontal drops of Lugols 5% was equivalant to 12.5 mg or 1 Iodoral. Your wife should be taking 4 Iodoral per day to aquire 50 mg per day. Since she seems to be holding her own with nodule size, have you thought about boosting the Iodine Doctor's recomended max of 100 mg per day for 3 months to see is her nodules reduced.
it is critical that she be taking 800mcg of selenomethinine too. that goes for everyone, with or without Iodine supplementation. of course the iodine is necessary, too.
Based on my understanding from your posts, this is what I've gathered and planned to accomplish
Lugol'sIodine (5% concentration)
- 50mg (8 full horizontal drops), note : will go to 100mg after 2 weeks
COMPANION NUTRIENTS
- 400mcg Selenomethinine, note : will go to 800mcg after 2 weeks
- 3000mg Vitamin C (efferverscent)
- 440mg Magnesium Oxide
- 500mg Niacin (Vitamin B3)
- 150mg Vitamin B2
- standard dose of multi-vitamins and minerals
NUTRITION
- fresh fruit and vegetables as food supplement and juices
- seasalt for trace minerals
- seaweed for trace minerals
- bee pollen for trace minerals
I'm not one of the old-timers, but to my eye it looks like you've done as good a job as I've seen pulling together the basics of the protocol. In fact, I think you're post should be R'd and maybe even w/ some slight edits excerpted for the FAQs.
My feedback:
" Lugol'sIodine (5% concentration)
- 50mg (8 full horizontal drops), note : will go to 100mg after 2 weeks"
Actually, you want VERTICAL, not horizontal drops, to get 50 mg from 8 drops.
It's under DOSAGE in the FAQs. A horizontal drop = 12.5 mg; a vertical drop = 6.25.
"- standard dose of multi-vitamins and minerals"
For me, personally, I don't like taking multis. I guess it would be okay if it were high enough quality, and didn't include stuff I didn't want to ingest, or a form of something I don't want to ingest.
"- seaweed for trace minerals"
I personally avoid seaweed (except occasionally w/ a sushi meal) because of concerns about heavy metal contamination.
"TO AVOID
- goitrogens : soy products"
V's had some things to say about goitrogens that I have personally paid close attention to. Soy, otoh, I agree with -- best to avoid. But stuff like broccoli & cabbage -- I'm w/ V, our bodies can sort it out as long as we're also getting enough iodine.
"Some questions about this plan :
Q1: All other supplements mentioned above can be taken together at the same time, EXCEPT Lugol's (oxidant). Is this correct?"
That's my understanding, although I tend to break things up myself, rather than take them all at once.
"Q2: Are there other ways to detox besides Salt-loading? My wife couldn't handle excess water well, frequent urination at night."
Salt loading is one specific protocol that is indicated for bromide detox in particular. The coffee enemas will detox. Heck, juicing will detox. She should drink plenty of (clean -- non fluoridated) water.
Would a chamberpot help with the night urination? Then she wouldn't have to travel so far from bed and could settle back to sleep more quickly after, maybe?
"Q3: Did I miss anything important?"
Use the search function -- the one that lets you search this forum specifically -- to look up specific symptoms, if she experiences any.
If you haven't bumped into this, some people pulse, especially at first. Search on pulse dosing if you want to read about that.
"Q4: Where to buy Lugol's 5% (500ml or more) online?"
That's covered in the FAQs. Many of us use J Crows.
I used to get up 2 or 3 times to go pee in the middle of the night. This can point to adrenal fatigue, for sure. Of course, Iodine supplementation after a while will help the adrenals as well.
I took homeopathic sulfur for a while and that helped the nighttime urination. I didn't get up to go pee after a bit. Now - this was before iodine and it could be that iodine will do it as well. Perhaps a small pinch of msm a few times a day would help. I know I was sulfur deficient at the time and the ND I'd talked to about it said it could easily be linked to sulfur deficiency.
My wife's been having frequent night urination for a long time. I'm glad that sulphur works for you. Do you mind to specify which type so I can look for it?
MSM didn't work at first for me. I backed up and took homeopathic sulfur. Is she asthmatic? That's indicative of a sulfur-deficiency as well. Just try a low potency homeopathic, you'll get it from a compounding pharmacy online. I doubt you can find one where you live. I ordered through Washington Homeopathics and I think I did a 1LM potency. It's a very low dose. Just adding the vibration, you take 3 pellets, put them in 4 oz. of water, stir the water many times and take one spoonful of the water. No joke. Vibratory medicine is fascinating.
But - this was before I knew about IP6 and Iodine. IP6 cleanses those organs that are imbalanced, bladder, kidneys and Iodine helps that as well. I can't say whether or not the sulfur would have worked as well as IP6 would. If she's on a lot of things right now, adding in one more macro thing isn't really that helpful.
I'd look to a kidney cleanse, really. I think I'd do that before I'd do sulfur. But it's your call. Muscle-test her for sulfur. Does MSM speak well to her? If you can just reset your body with the information rather than add another big supplement, it might be better.
I just looked on abchomeopathy.com with those symptoms and Calcarea Carbonica came up. You might be able to just get a Boiron version of that at your local Whole Foods. Boiron is a really available brand of homeopathic but I don't think they make a homeopathic sulfur. It's a pretty specific remedy.
Food based is always best. It's the form your body recognizes first. Is she a vata body type? Small and has fluctuating high energy/low blood pressure and adrenal fatigue? If so, cut back on stimulating foods. Sugar is hard on everyone but vata seem to handle it harder.
What about cooking onions? I've heard conflicting opinions about the health benefits of cooked versus uncooked onions.
Onions (Allium cepa) are members of the lily family, and like many members of this family, contain many unique sulfur-based molecules. The three basic categories of sulfur-based molecules in onion are: (1) sulfoxides (including molecules called alliins); (2) thiosulfinates (including molecules called allicins); and (3) dithiins (including molecules called ajoenes). Each of these three sulfur-based groups has its own health-related benefits, and the balance between these three groups within an onion is partly determined by the way the onion is prepared.
Onions should be sliced and allowed to sit.
Slicing, chopping, or crushing an onion permits its sulfoxides (including its alliins) to be converted into thiosulfinates (including alliciins) or dithiins (including ajoenes). In its unsliced, unchopped, or uncrushed form, the onion contains predominantly sulfoxides. The formation of these other sulfur compounds is important, since they are most closely linked to lowering blood cholesterol and preventing heart disease. In addition, only the dithiins in onion have been shown to help prevent thrombosis (formation of a blood clot in an artery or vein).
Slicing, chopping, or crushing onions allows new sulfur molecules to form by activating enzymes within the onion. For example, slicing activates the enzyme alliinase, which converts alliin (a sulfoxide) into allicin (a thiosulfinate). Because this enzymatic conversion takes a little time, we recommend letting chopped onions sit for 10 minutes before working with them further in a recipe or exposing them to heat. This extra 10 minutes will allow the formation of new heart-protective thiosulfinates and dithiins in the onion.
Heating chopped onions widens their variety of sulfur compounds.
Although we don't have direct evidence from onions, we have evidence from another closely related member of the lily family - garlic (Allium sativa) - that heating creates a much wider variety of sulfur-containing molecules. In the garlic model, two basic categories of sulfur compounds (thiosulfinates and dithiins) get expanded into five categories (allyl sulfides, methylsulfides, diallyl sulfides, thiosulphinates, and thiosulphonates) after the garlic is heated. Several of the molecules in these expanded sulfur categories have been shown to have anti-cancer as well as heart-benefiting activity.
Heating for more than 30 minutes should be avoided to prevent reduction of total sulfur content.
Even in the world of raw onions, there are large differences in total sulfur content. Sweeter onions like Vidalia and Walla Walla are lower in total sulfur compounds than "hotter" onions like Italian Red or Red Torpedo. When it comes to cooking, however, it is prolonged heating (30 minutes or greater) at temperatures above 158°F that significantly reduces total sulfur content. To avoid loss of total sulfur content, but to maximize the variety of sulfur compounds contained in onions, we've developed the world's healthiest onion sautéing method for use with onion-containing recipes.
That's brilliant, thanks for that! I knew about crushing garlic and have for years before I slice it.
I'd go just sulfur based food. If you do too much sulfur, I think you lose glutathione and that's not good. But the more food based healing implements in your body the better. Besides, anions boost immune function!
Heck, I was tickled to read about the heating! In the wintertime, sometimes I just GOTTA chop up an entire small or medium onion, saute it butter and/or VCO for about 3-5 minutes, and add an egg or two in the last minute. Then, when the egg is thoroughly cooked but still quite moist, it's done, but ready for a bit of salsa
Thank you for your feedback. The juicing is good, we've tried it with various veges and fruits (around 1000ml daily), after 1 week or so, the skin is lighter in color, bowel movements are good, acne much reduced. Juicing is a good protocol.
There are many forms of magnesium and I found magnesium oxide to be constipating. Mag deficiency is a major contributor in sluggish bowels. If your wife tends toward sluggish bowels your best bet is to get a more easily absorbed form of magnesium. Getting it in a chelated form or a colloidal form will be better. I like magnesium glycinate or magnesium malate. The malate form also chelates aluminum and shrinks Gallstones (thank you Newport) and my body has really been liking that as of late. Magnesium acts as a sedative for the muscles and it's integral in helping repair her adrenals. When the adrenals are taxed it affects your body's ability to hold onto magnesium. Fluoride affects your body's ability to hold onto magnesium and calcium as well. The adrenals are so important! Magnesium glycinate is one of the most easily absorbable forms. It will keep her adrenals calm and help fulfill that companion nutrient for Iodine supplementation.
When you need to get up to pee several times in the night it means your sleep patterns are disturbed. She's not getting to drop into those deeper rhythms. Anything that can help her sleep better will help her detox process for sure. It's probable that her fascia in her belly is too tight and it puts strain on the bladder. I'm not joking. I had visceral massage for a while from a myofascial and neuromuscular massotherapist. They work to release your liver, bladder, uterus, stomach - you name it - from the fascia. Loosening the fascia means that there's an increase in blood flow and that's just good for everybody. Her elimination will improve greatly if her fascia is looser, leading to more complete eliminations during the day.
I think visceral massage was a huge contributor to not getting up during the middle of the night. My periods got better, too. Certainly the bowels are happier if they're not bound tightly under your fascia. We're not talking going to a swedish massage therapist. You have to find someone that knows what they're doing. It's called 'visceral manipulation'. Find a good myofascial massotherapist and a few sessions will get her organs heads and tails where they are right now.
One more thing!!
One of the greatest tips I ever got on restoring deeper sleep was this: an eye mask. Try this after those sessions. Wearing an eye mask covers your third eye and triggers your body to relax into a deeper sleep.
I've been on Iodine for 8 months and I've done all these other companion things and have similar symptoms of your wife. It hit me last week that I'd gotten comfortable with doing salt pushes and larger amounts of salt and vitamin C to flush the adrenals and help with detox.
But - I'd forgotten about the salt cure. In my head I thought I was still getting electrolytes to nourish my adrenals, help with bowels - well, effectively just thrive - because without that low, chronic source of electrolytes, you can easily suffer an imbalance. When you do flushes more than you do a bit in water you can flush away more electrolytes. I went back to the salt cure. I'm a whole lot better than I was a few weeks ago. Much clearer, breathing better, sleeping better.
Just adding that 1/4 tsp. of Sea Salt to every quart of water you drink makes a huge difference. I prefer Himalayan Sole for that, though.
Thanks to all for the replies, especially Miss Helfinger.
I've got most of the supplements in the plan mentioned above (except the hi-dose vit b2 & b3), and have worked out a schedule to take them daily.
As for the salt loading protocol, some persuasion is needed to coax my wife to do it.
4 weeks supplementation will be the initial phase, to monitor on existing ailments (occasional asthma, poor digestion plus shallow breathing, sleeping patterns, fatigue, low blood pressure, frequent night urination etc).
If these ailments improve, that means we're on the right track. If not, then we will see what can be done.
As for the non-malignant 23mm thyroid nodule, it will take at least 6 months to notice any changes.
I pray this doesn't sound harsh. Never say 'it's going to take at least xxx amount of time for it to...'
It makes it true. This can be gone very quickly. Have her run light to her throat during prayer or meditation. Nothing has to take any amount of time. If we're convinced it does - that's the only thing that will make it so. Use the words 'better already', 'healed so quickly I didn't even notice', 'I'm so grateful she's better'. Cells hear our thoughts and they vibrate through our body. Have you seen 'The Secret'? You should. You can watch it online for five bucks, it'll stream right through your computer. I'm sure you can rent it at any video store now. Perhaps it's time for her to see 'What The Bleep' as well. Both documentaries (but not boring at all) on the manifestation of thought and the healing process. Well worth a Saturday afternoon curled up in bed!
One more thing. The salt cure and salt loading are very different animals. The salt I'm talking about that has a deeper resonance doesn't taste like salt at all. It has a pretty broad spectrum of trace minerals and will nourish her on a cellular level. They're big himalayan salt rocks, pink that are cut with lasers, never chisels, so it doesn't destroy the crystalline structure of the stone. You put it in a glass jar with clean RO or distilled water and 12 hours later you have what's called 'sole'. You put a 1/2 tsp of that in your quart of water and it tastes like spring mineral water, that's it. You put celtic Sea Salt in the same quart of water and it'll taste like your wife expects. Sea salt is better salt for salt loading. 'American Blue Green' is the original salt company. It comes in a cotton bag and you use one salt stone at a time. It'll last you forever. With shipping it's about $40 and well worth it. http://www.americanbluegreen.com
