I started juicing about a week ago. I have been drinking one cup a day on an empty stomach, no fasting though. I juice all organic carrots, beet tops, ginger, lemon, collard greens, and sometimes watercress. First couple of times was great, I felt the surge of energy after drinking it. But about 4th or 5th time, I started to feel mucus forming in my mouth as I was drinking the juice (kind of like my saliva was getting too thick and stringy to swallow). I also felt mucusy that night, but all gone the next day. I didn't juice the day after, until today. This morning I started to drink my juice and immediately felt the same kind of thick saliva/mucus in my mouth again. I also felt extremely tired right after drinking the juice, the energy surge I felt the first couple of times is gone. Now I wonder if this means I am getting allergic to the juice, or that I am cleansing. But if it were the cleansing, would the reaction be so immediate - after a few sips?? That seems more like an allergy. Any thoughts??
I did many cleanses before, not juicing though, and my diet is pretty good (many vegetables etc).
Thanks for any ideas.
not excatly sure but if i were you i would completely change my juice recipe. the body need different nutrients from different foods. its possible your body is telling you that the same food or juice everyday isn't cuttin it. also beets are very intense, i only do beets for a couple days then leave them alone for a couple weeks. same with beet greens - very intense, may be too much for your body everyday.
get yourself one of those cheap juicing recipe books on amazon like one by steve meyerowitz or jack lalanne and vary your juices up every day, or every other day.
try some cabbage/apple/ginger or maybe carrot/apple/lemon or pineapple/cucumber or ???
fruit juice in the morning is a bit easier on th tummy also. fruit juice with some lemon and ginger added is a tremendous breakfast juice.
Do you drink milk or indulge in other dairy products?Do you smoke? Are we talking your saliva is thickening,or you are discharging mucus frome your sinuses?Speaking of sinuses,do you have sinus problems?I dought you are allergic to the juice, but it is possible.Juicing does speed up the bodys ability to cleanse itself.Hopefully that is all thats going on here. Are you familiar with the concept of autointoxication, this is considered a healing crisis within the body.If you dont eat breakfast you may experiance this,a mini fast. When the body cleanses faster than the body can deal with the toxic load you will experiance a bad low energy shaky kind of feeling.Fasting can be a wonderfull way of cleansing and resting the body if done properly. What kind of juicer did you get?Good luck and happy juicing!!!
Thanks everybody.
No, I don't eat a lot of dairy. I eat plain yogurt a few times a week but it doesn't give me any problems. I don't have sinus problems. The only time I felt stuffed up while consuming something was when drinking red wine a few month ago. It started happening out of the blue (didn't have problems with red wine before) and it lasted for a month or two (immediate congestion as soon as I started drinking it). But I am OK now, I can enjoy a glass with no problems now (not sure why it came and went, I thought I must have developed allergy to sulfites but somehow it went away on its own).
The congestion I feel while drinking juice is different though, it feels like my saliva thickens up, it makes swallowing a bit harder, I don't know how else to explain it. Also, later in the day I may feel something sitting deep in my sinuses (btw my nose and my mouth where you can't get rid of it either way) and that eventually comes up my nose (clear mucus).
I got the Green Star juicer. I seem to get pulpy juice though, I thought it was supposed to give pulp free juice. Anybody else?
Sounds like more of an inconvienance than a serious health issue. The yogurt is a mucous forming food,I would stop if it was me to see what would happen. Then reintroduce latter while watching for signs of mucous issues.I have a greenstar2000,and have no pulp issues unless I use the fruit sreen.Which I only use on lemons, and use a strainer before consuming. In the instructions I think they recomend straining all your juice if you desire pulpless juice.I dont mind a little pulp myself the extra fiber is a good thing.I believe Jay Kordich said juicing radishes helped dry up and open up sinuses. You might want to give it a try!Be Wise Be GREEN Be Healthy!!

My diet is good (lots of vegetables, some fruit like apples, bluberries, dried apricots and prunes, sprouted grain bread, olive oil, nuts, seeds, some plain yogurt, some eggs, chicken and fish, mostly all is organic, drink only pure water, sometimes red wine when I go out, no sugar at all...). This mucus is a direct result of juice consumption, not from my diet, because it happens as I am drinking the juice, the reaction is immediate and obvious.
Many people find that having fruits or even vegetable juices when still consuming meat and byproducts will result in this kind of reaction giving a false impression that it is the veggies and/or fruit that is causing problems when it is the underlying combination that is.
Some experimentation here may be necessary if you value the consumption of juice.
For instance I used to react to fruit and certain veggie juices when I was still consuming grains and meat, but once I was raw vegan, this tapered off and then disappeared.
I would think your reaction are caused by the body ebginning to cleanse from getting a DECENT food source for a change. Yes the cleanisjng/detox would begin pretty soon depending on your toxic load, how long you have been abusing your body on cooked/acid/ & mucuss forming foods.
All depends on where you are and what you have been doing to your body uptill now.
What you should be more concerned about is the LOADS of mucus being formed in your gut because of eating poor food choices/poor food combining. This one doesnt see or know about untill too late.
FRUITS/nuts/seeds, and RAw Leafy vegis' will not do this to you. (Ie Mucusless foods) Sadly pizza does not fall in this realm lol.
I would strongly recommend reading a book called Mucusless Diet to get a understanding on the true nature of Mucus in relation to our foods.
You may also want to investigate a herbal formulae by Dr Christopher orginally called the Lower bowel Balance formulae. This is a non invasive method to remove mucus from the intestinal tract, when used with a mucussless diet. When all of that is being cleaned you will fidn you juicing much more effective. Oh yes, whilst cleaning that out, you may as well use a GOOD deworming formulae at thge same time, kinda kill two birds with one stone.
Lapis makes a very good point. You will get plenty bang for the buck learning about food combinations and POOR food combinations, such as mixing fruits with ANYTHING else, or mixing proteins with carbs etc etc. These two are good example of poor food combining.
Kinda makes sense to go to the CAUSE and work up, rather than use plasters because they feel/ taste nice.
