My father just a few weeks ago out of the blue got stiff, achy muscles with a lot of pain so that he has problems lifing his arms. He got diagnosed with polymyalgia and is currently taking pregnazone which he says is actually working compared to everything else he was being given.
He said the doctors told him it comes from bacteria and that his immune system has turned against himself. He was in the hospital after he became ill and had a fall which knocked him unconscious a couple of months ago and my father thinks he might have got an infection while he was in the hospital that might have led to his current problems.
I read a little about polymyalgia and from the little I read, it says cause unknown. My father doesn't want to continue to take the pregnazone since it will do damage in the long run, and would like to solve this problem the natural way. He is 76 and has been taking vitamins and herbs since he was in his thirties.
Do you have any suggestions for him? I gave him some yucca stem since that is all I had, but he hasn't taken it. Don't know if it would help, but he seems a little scared to try it, maybe as he is worried it might make him worse. Odd, since he is ususally not like that with herbs.
Polymyalgia is an autoimmune form of arthritis, which also causes muscle pain. Viral infection is believed to be the trigger for this condition.
I recommend antivirals first such as chaparral, pau d' arco and andrographis. These should be taken three times daily for at least a month.
He should also work on his adrenal glands. Adrenal dysfunction plays a major role in autoimmunity as the adrenals normally produce sufficient levels of corticosteroids to modulate the immune system. The corticosteoids are also the body's primary anti-inflammatories. Adrenal support requires vitamin C and pantothenic acid, which are best from natural sources. And don't forget adaptogenic herbs. The primary ones I would focus on are jiaogulan, suma, and licorice root.
Vitamin D3 can also help as it also helps to modulate immune responses.
