The following is an excerpt from a group email sent to me by
Doug Nash of the Dana Point-based Spindrift 43 Windcastle,
who is a veteran of the '04 Baja Ha-Ha. It's about the tragic
death of his wife Silvie Fink at Epi Island, Vanuatu. She died
12 hours after taking MMS, a so-called alternative medicine
prophylactic and remedy for malaria and many other diseases.
It was sold to her by another cruising couple. The 76-yearold
Nash and his wife Silvie, who was from Mexico, had been
cruising the South Pacific for several years.
"My life during the past five weeks has been a nightmare,
but I've been supported by many people in the cruising community
here and abroad, plus all Silvie's friends and relatives
back home in Mexico and in the States. The outpouring of
grief has been overwhelming. But no one else can answer all
the questions people have asked about what happened to her,
so I must do that. Here is a summary:
"While in Port Vila, Silvie decided to purchase some MMS
that she'd heard about from a cruising couple. The guy is from
Belgium and his wife is from California. I was not happy about
her wanting to try the stuff, but I didn't interfere because I
knew nothing about it at the time. Besides, she was a grown
and savvy woman with lots of experience with all kinds of
good and bad medicines. She'd even done a little internet
research on MMS over several weeks before trying it. Neither
of us thought she would be in any danger from taking it. How
dreadfully wrong we were!
"We left Port Vila on August 4, and sailed 90 miles north
to Epi, which is another island in the Vanuatu group. We
anchored at Lamen Bay the day after their annual canoe
race festival. Having decided to stay an extra day at the nice
anchorage, Sylvie decided to try MMS. Its proponents had
told her that it would prevent malaria, which is prevalent in
this part of the world.
"From almost the moment Silvie drank the mixture of MMS
and lime juice — which she'd brewed up according to the
instructions of Jim Humble,
the principal proponent of the
stuff — things went wrong.
She became nauseated, and
was soon both vomiting and
suffering from diarrhea. But
since the MMS literature
emphasized that this was a
normal reaction, she assumed
it would pass. It didn't.
"It turned into a day of
torture, with Silvie gradually
getting worse, to the point
of having severe abdominal
pains, then urinary pains. I
helped her all day, bathing
her, comforting her and trying
to get liquids into her. But she
couldn't keep anything down.
About the time it started to get
dark, she began to feel faint.
That's when I became fully alarmed. She fell into a coma while
I was on the VHF calling for assistance.
"With her unresponsive, I put out another radio call, this
time for immediate emergency care. Fellow cruisers rushed to
our boat within minutes. For over an hour we administered
CPR and oxygen. But neither they, nor an adrenalin shot
administered by a physician from the village, were able to
revive her. Sylvie died aboard Windcastle around 9 p.m., just12 hours after she'd taken that fatal drink of MMS. Her body
was flown back to Port Vila the next day and put in the hospital
morgue. I brought Windcastle to Port Vila the next day.
"Since then, there has been — because Sylvie hadn't died a
natural death — a three-week-long police investigation involving
Vanuatu criminal investigators. For one thing, it's illegal
for anyone to promote or sell MMS as a medical remedy in
Vanuatu. Australian joint command investigators, who aid in
law enforcement in Vanuatu, also became involved. That led
to a court order and, eventually, a senior pathologist's being
flown from Melbourne to conduct a post mortem autopsy. That
was two weeks ago. Then Silvie's son and daughter agreed that
her body should be flown to New Zealand for cremation.
"Last week, I accompanied Sylvie's body to Auckland by
plane. I was present for the cremation and arranged to have
her ashes sent to her daughter Aretha in Mexico City. I'm now
back on Windcastle in Port Vila, where I await the results of
the autopsy from Australia's Victorian Institute of Forensic
Medicine in Melbourne. I'm also dealing with the need to secure
our boat against the approaching cyclone season, which
may mean having to sail her to another country.
"My heart has been absolutely crushed by the sudden loss
of my dear wife Silvie. It's so shocking I can hardly believe
it. I miss her immensely, and Windcastle is empty without
her presence. But with all of her relatives and friends, Silvie,
who brought so much joy and happiness into the world and
to us, will live on forever in our hearts and minds. I've been
told that the villagers at Epi, who had been so entertained by
Sylvie's dancing the night before she died, have built a shrine
to honor her.
"As for MMS, I wish I'd done a better job of preventing
Sylvie, who had become the love of my life, from messing with
it. I know now that it's a dangerous, toxic chemical which, if
ingested, can be lethal. MMS killed my wife, Silvie."
So ends Doug's letter.

edit~ In re-reading your post, I see that
MMS killed someone's wife, not yours. Still,
for the gentleman who lost his wife, my
sentiments are still the same...blessings...
I am truly sorry to hear of the loss
of your wife. I cannot imagine the
grief you must be feeling. I do admire
your willingness to try and alert others
to the dangers of MMS. I have never used
it but am aware that you are not alone
in your concerns. I hope sharing your
story may help save others.
I pray you find peace and solace in
your grieving and the company of those
gathered around you for support.
Yes MMS can be very dangerous stuff but how dangerous it is depends on who is using it and how well they understand the effects of dosage. Did one drop of MMS cause this reaction. I'd say she used far more than one drop at the first dose if she only used one dose.
Some people cannot tolerate even small amounts of MMS and put themselves at risk if they use too much, especially too quickly.
It was inevitable there would be a fatality as a result of an overdose or an extreme reaction whether accidental or not
We may never know exactly what she took but does this mean MMS should be banned for public sale. If it is I bet foolish peole will start buying calcium hypochlorite, the new "miracle" and overdosing on that too, or just drinking household bleach if Jim Humble says so
So sorry to hear this. This is only one of many deaths by MMS users reported in the past two years on this forum. I hope this serves as one more warning for those that continue to believe Mr. Humble. And, yes there are dangerous pharmaceutical drugs also, but, the dangers of MMS are well known.
It would be more correct to say that MMS has possibly contributed to deaths, since it's yet unproven.
Let's say those in a very weakened state could be pushed over the edge by MMS. I think we can expect this to be more likely in future if MMS2 catches on and especially if people take both.
I'd rather stick to the facts, that's all
It's a bit like Jonshers response above, he must be the new Bumble,
tell us Jonsher, your dosage rates, who can and can not tolerate MMS:Chlorine Dioxide poisoning.
You see Jonsher, your statement
"We may never know exactly what she took but does this mean MMS should be banned for public sale."
How do you ban something that is already illegal to sell to the public for use as you would recommend, (taking drops).
I implore anyone who want's to listen to rubbish to go back through his posts, like the one below!
"I am just trying to debate to the best of my abilty and I admit I do lose patience with Bruce when he tells people new to the forum that they may die from inhalation if they use MMS. Does this justify the malicious posts that I requested be removed"
I don't recommend anyone use MMS anymore Bruce. Can you not read? I believe there are better alternatives.
I can't say that anyone will not get benefit from using sodium chlorite though, as I did myself
Many people report vomiting and diarrhea associated with ingestion of MMS. Please be advised that, in cases of acute diarrhea, the Centers for Disease Control recommends seeking medical attention if certain conditions exist, including:
History of chronic medical conditions or concurrent illness
Visible blood in the stool
High output of diarrhea
Persistent vomiting
Signs consistent with dehydration
Change in mental status
The recommendation to seek medical attention applies to "ANY form of diarrhea" (viral, bacterial, parasitic, or NON-INFECTIOUS).
In the video, Mr. Humble relates the story of a man who supposedly "chug-a-lugged" two ounces of MMS because he had mistaken it for a glass of water. Mr. Humble says that the man became very ill. His kidneys stopped working and he had to go on dialysis. He was hospitalized for several weeks. Mr. Humble says that people should know that, if they get extremely sick after taking MMS, "they need to go to the hospital because the kidneys will quit working".
There was an article entitled "Acute Sodium Chlorite Poisoning Associated with Renal Failure" published in a journal called "Renal Failure" (Ren Fail, 1993; 15(5); 645-8). The abstract says that the patient ingested 10g of sodium chlorite. The patient suffered an acute hemolytic crisis and acute renal failure. He was on dialysis for four weeks.
There’s a Letter to the Editor in the September 2009 edition of the Journal of Medical Toxicology entitled "Chlorine Dioxide-induced Acute Hemolysis" by Hari Kishan, M.D. (J Med Toxicol 2009 Sep; 5(3):177). Dr. Kishan relates his experience with two patients "with alleged accidental consumption of approximately 100 ml each of 2% (20 g/L) Cl02". Cl02 is chlorine dioxide. Dr. Kishan says that investigations on both patients revealed significant anemia with features of intravascular hemolysis. The patients were supported with blood transfusions and aggressive hydration to prevent hemoglobinuria-associated renal failure.
From his location in Africa, Jim Humble sent me, in encrypted form, his own assessment of Mr. Nash’s accusations surrounding the death of his wife Sylvie. I’ll simply publish it as received, without further comment. ~AA

Subject: Response to Doug Nash
As I have already said, the loss of one’s wife is probably the greatest loss that one will ever experience and thousands of people have also mourned his loss, and so do I. I shall never wish him anything but the best of wishes for the loss he has experienced.
Having said that, there is the other side of the story that no one seems to want to face, so let me state it. After all I am probably the one person in the world who should state it. Immediately after his wife’s death Mr. Nash started on his attack of MMS. Without knowing anything about MMS, or bothering to learn anything about MMS, Mr. Nash embarked on a program to destroy a chemical that is probably at this time the most important chemical that mankind has. Out of the estimated 2 million people who have already used MMS there are at least 100 thousand lives saved and more hundreds of thousands of people have overcome their suffering and returned to living their lives back in a normal fashion.
Then if Mr. Nash had of checked just a little bit of the chemistry, because the data is readily available, he would have found that MMS is a natural chemical manufactured by the human immune system to help prevent diseases and to keep the body healthy. He didn’t check at the time and he is not checking now. All he wants is his revenge by destroying the public’s faith in this chemical and to create fear in the public’s minds. The fact is, he is taking his revenge out not on just the public, but on humanity in general. Any person in his situation must accept a certain responsibility to mankind. His statements will destroy many people’s chance to again live a normal life. In a situation of this importance most normal people are up to taking the kind of responsibility that would demand that they review the items in question and absolutely know their ground. I’ve seen it many times. Normal people just step up and do what is necessary. Here is a man, Mr. Nash, stepping up and doing what is totally unnecessary. Every time Mr. Nash sends one of his heart breaking messages he hurts hundreds if not thousands of people who will probably never use MMS because of his message.
I am 77 years old and I have studied the human psyche for over 50 years. I traveled the world and spent several hundred thousand hard earned dollars to take courses, therapy, buy books, and study with people from around the globe. My studies tell me that when a person takes such a huge disregard for his responsibility to mankind there is a reason. He is reacting like an extremely guilty man. In my opinion he is lying about something that he feels he must keep secret at all costs. Now I know that there is going to be a lot of people out there saying how terrible and unfeeling I am to say anything like this when he has experience such a terrible loss, but don’t you see I would be shirking my responsibility if I did not tell the public what I believe.
Thirteen years ago, I stood in the jungle of Guyana and accepted the responsibility to take the cure that I had found to mankind. I had also found gold in the jungle, and I could have continued being a prospector. But I accepted my responsibility and I risked my life at that time to prove my discovery. I would be shirking my responsibility, now, to not at least say what I believe.
From Mr. Nash’s actions and reactions I believe that he is lying about something in the situation that happened. I don’t know what, but I know that most people have a much greater sense of responsibility to mankind than Mr. Nash has demonstrated. In fact he as demonstrated a total lack of any kind of that responsibility and is showing an attack. In observing men in situations throughout the world where they have had losses or special situations have been thrust on them, most rise to the occasion. Only a few throw their chance to prove their worth to the wind. I believe that he is directing the attention of the public and police way from himself by ranting about MMS. It is my suggestion that Mr. Nash be completely investigated. If I had the money I would pay for it to be done, but my money is like I have always said, for the people here in Africa. If you think that is unfeeling, I am sorry. It is my job to protect MMS. There were people who witnessed his wife die, but how many people witnessed the rest of the day? We only know that she was in a comma. We need to know what happened the rest of that day, before people arrived. I am sorry, but Mr. Nash is trying too hard to blame it all on MMS. He is screaming MMS so loudly no one is looking at him. Well I can’t do anything from here in Africa. But I suggest that the police take a good look at Mr. Nash. Any person even slightly responsible would ask for an investigation. They wouldn’t rave about something they knew nothing about. Do you see? He isn’t even waiting for the autopsy reports, he is trying to do as much damage as he can before the report comes out.
I would like to point out that 2 drops that he said his wife had couldn’t possibly have caused what he claims. I have given more than two drops to a very tiny baby puppy without them even vomiting. In Africa and Mexico I have give two drops to hundreds of babies with malaria and dozens of other diseases. I have seen more people take MMS than anyone else in the world certainly more than 5000 people. Not even one person per thousand has done more than vomit 30 seconds and they didn’t last a full minute of vomiting. Now that I think about it, Mr. Nash is showing an amazing method of attack. It is like he already had the plan of attack in mind. Either he has an amazing knowledge of the Internet and the various blogs or he has some help finding the places to send his heart breaking but hate messages. I can state that I know that two drops couldn’t cause that reaction that he has told us. MMS is not a catalyst. It is an oxidizer. If the autopsy says different then we know that she had much more than 2 drops. A man in Los Angeles took 1/2 of a bottle of MMS that’s 2.75 ounces or 1403 drops. He went to the hospital, but he didn’t die. Do you see, 1403 drops didn’t kill this man and 2 drops killed Nash’s wife? Two drops cannot last in the human body longer than 1.5 hours. So if they find MMS in her body, we know something happened other than what he said. You can kill anyone by forcing too much of anything down their throat, too much water, or salt, or sugar, or anything else.
So please, any of you, don’t follow Nash’s example. Take a few minutes to at least check MMS out. At this point you too have a certain responsibility to your family, and at least to your friends and neighbors. If MMS really works, and you are willing to check that out, the fact is you will save someone’s life within the next 5 years simply because you know what it does. That is the exact statistics of it. If you don’t know that MMS works, then whoever it is will just die like they normally would, and you will probably never realize it. Statistics says that everyone in the US comes in contact at least once every 5 years with someone that is about to die. Of course, most people don’t recognize it when it happens, but it does happen. And like it or not, as a member of the human race, you also have a certain responsibility to that person that you will come in contact with in the future. Please accept that responsibility now. You will feel better knowing that you can save a life when the time comes. – Jim Humble
Jim Humble's response contains a complete falsehood: "MMS is a natural chemical manufactured by the human immune system to help prevent diseases and to keep the body healthy."
Your body cannot manufacture sodium chlorite or chlorine dioxide. As a matter of fact, they cannot exist in nature at all. They are manufactured, synthetic chemicals, created from elemental chlorine, which itself also never exists in nature, it must be separated from sodium chloride by electrolysis.
I am so sorry for Mr. Nash and for the probably many other people who have been harmed by this so-called "natural" remedy. There is nothing natural about it.
Thanks, that was a slip of my mind, forgot that it was chlorite and not hypochlorite. Similar chemistry, though. I've updated both the message and the web page. Chlorite turns into chlorine dioxide on "activation" by acids, which is very unstable and releases free chlorine. I can't believe this stuff has become so popular, has probably hurt a lot of people by now.
You need to go back and revisit your chemical reactions again...
In an open system, you are correct. However, in a closed system the chlorine dioxide reduces to mostly chlorite and some chloride. In a closed system no chlorine is released.
While MMS is somewhat scary, you should check into Jim Humbles recommendation of using calcium hypochlorite (MMS2). It seems that chlorinating your colon is Jim Humbles answer to defeating illness... [note of sarcasm icon]
Thank you Mr Humble. I still believe in you.
From reading this message, I have the feeling something I cannot write on a blog happened. I perfectly understand what Mr Humble meant about this event. And I agree with him.
Something has always amazed me. When mainstream drugs from Big Pharma kill, nobody shouts ! How come ???
I am sorry for your loss. Even though I don't believe any of what you state here.
I have been taking MMS for about 2 1/2 years now and it took away a fungus on my lungs called "aspergillious" that wouldn't go away with nothing which gave me an asthma that took me to the hospital 5 times in a year.
I am still taking it and has never failed to heal me from everything. Although you take it you never fail to keep getting sick in this world of madness.
Despite what people say about MMS, I have been cured by MMS from an tropical infection. It started with a tine wound on my foot. The next day my foot was swollen and the lower part of my leg turned red. I have to admit that I use an anti-biotic creme on the wound. In addition I started taking MMS, 3 drops every hour. The next day I reduced the MMS to 3 drops every few hours. The infection cured completely and I am sure it would never cured without MMS.
