Hi,
I wanted to add nigari flakes to my drinking water and went to a couple of japanese grocery stores to look for it.
All I found was a concentrated liquid, probably similar to mag oil, that came with a small container of bitterns.
I know bitterns are used with nigari to process tofu but can't find any info on whether I should be adding it to my water.
Everything on the bottle is in japanese and when I google bitterns, all I get are chemical industry sites.
From what I've read about Mag Chloride is labeled by the japanese as "bitters" because it's bitter. The Mag Chloride or nagari is used to make tofu. I know from personal experience that it's very bitter. I've made my own mag oil by buying nagari and adding it to distilled water. I have some in a little spray bottle diluted with water to spray on me after my bath. I like to spray it on my face, it makes my skin feel soft but doesn't make me break out like moisturizer does. Anyway, sometimes I get it on my lips and forget to wipe it off. Then when I lick my lips, I remember, 'cause it is bitter.
[EDIT: It is used in food mfg (ie tofu) so I suppose you can imbibe it. You'll be able to tell from whether you can actually drink it, how much to add, I guess]
I was confused because the bitterns came in a small (eye drops-sized) bottle packaged with the nigari water. I was wondering why they separated it. Since everything on the packaging, except the dose and how many doses were in the bottle, was in Japanese, I'm still in the dark.
But I put both in my water cooler and I'm still alive so it's all good. ;-)
