DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor; nor do I have any medical knowledge at all. I am just sharing my story and my experience with a natural herbal remedy that alleviated ALL OF MY SYMPTOMS within 2 months. I am not saying this is a "cure." But, this did eliminate all of my symptoms and I have been symptom free for over a year. Please consult a doctor before using any herbal remedy. I had suffered for 5 years with Colitis. I did the drug thing, and I was always bleeding, even on the drugs. I never stopped bleeding; it just varied in degrees. I started on Asacol, no success. Then, on to Pentasa (and no success). Then on to Imuran (and no success). I had been on and off prednisone as well. I had never had any remission. I was always bleeding, just varying degrees. I had been hospitalized 4 times because my colon was in such bad shape. My doctor told me that I should consider getting it removed. SCREW THAT . So, I started testing natural things on me, because I really wanted it to go away. (As a side note: Doctors really hate you when you say that you are doing natural things with your body). Anyway, I probably tried over 50+ natural remedies that people claimed work (e.g. Molecure, Mangosteen, apple cidar vinegar, NAET, raw food diet, vegan diet, probiotics, fish oil, etc.). I am not saying those things won't work for you, but they did not for me. Anyways, I am happy to say (that with the help of a recommendation) I have found something that works. My GI has told me I have no inflammation in my colon, and I haven't had any bleeding/mucous/discomfort in over a year. All my symptoms are gone. Hopefully this will help you too. So, I will cut to the case to tell you how to get 100% better (hopefully) using a natural remedy. YERBA MATE TEA has completely eliminated all of my symptoms of Colitis. What is Yerba Mate Tea? It is a strain of green tea, that is an anti-inflammatory, and it is loaded with anti-oxidants. DISCLAIMER: DO NOT TAKE YERBA MATE TEA WHILE ON AN ANTIBIOTIC. I learned that the hard way. It is a toxic combination. How to Prepare the Brew of Tea I was recommended to take almost 3 litres of the tea a day. Doing that for two months made me lose 40 pounds, and I was hospitalized (due to dehydration). But, I found the right quantity to take, which has no side effects (for me, at least). Step 1: Take 1 tbsp. of the Yerba Mate tea leaves and put into a bodum (or some type of tea-steeping mechanism that will push the leaves to the bottom of the liquid) Step 2: Take 3/4 a cup of boiling water (eyeball it), and mix with 1/4 cup of room temperature water (or cold water). Mix these two waters before adding to the tea. (I usually pour the boiling water 3/4s of the way into a mug, and then top it off with 1/4 of room temperature water). 100% boiling water will kill the tea leaves, which is why you mix it with a bit of cold/room-temp. water Step 3: Add the mixed water to the bodum, that has the tea leaves in it Step 4: Let the tea steep for at least an hour (I usually let it go for 2 or 3 hours). Step 5: Drink Note: I only drink this once a day, and after 1 month, all my symptoms were gone. Note: Some people say it keeps them up at night (it does have caffeine in it). But, I sleep well. Have it in the morning if you have trouble sleeping. Where I get my Yerba Mate Tea leaves I have no affiliation with the following website, but it's where I get my leaves from. I just want you all to have all the information you need. Feel free to get it from somewhere else. But, I know that these leaves worked for me. http://www.yerba-mate.com/store_yerba.htm#argentine - The Aviva's Argentine Organic Yerba Mate (pure leaf cut) I live in Canada. Shipping takes about 2 weeks to get to me. I have a couple problems with what you said, although I do believe you are entitled to an opinion. To ASSUME it was the yerba mate' is naive. There are a number of things that affect autoimmunity since it involves both bacterial infection and adrenal function. Things as simple as changes in diet and avoidance of stress can affect autoimmunity. Then the people you are talking to need to look at the medical journals and do their homework. The MAC connection to Crohn's and UC has been known for over a decade. It is an auto-immune and inflammatory disease. All of the prescription drugs just target the symptoms by being anti-inflammatories or immuno-modulators. Not immune modulators, they are immune suppressants. The medical community is under the assumption that autoimmunity stems from an overactive immune system, which is incorrect. But they use drugs such as Prednisone to not only reduce inflammation but to also wipe out immune function so the body cannot mount an immune response. As far as I can tell, Yerba Mate does the same thing (except it actually works), and it has no side effects. No, yerba mate' does not do the same thing. What is great about mate' is that it is nutrient rich. But the caffeine in it is an issue, especially if it is roasted since this increases caffeine content. And to say it is free of side effects is also naive. Everything has the potential for side effects. Ingesting too much water can kill someone. Getting too much oxygen can kill someone with COPD. And mate' can crash the adrenals and thin out the blood. Don't ASSUME that I have not tried it. I have been drinking mate' for many years off and on. I especially like the Yerba Mate' Royale by Wisdom of the Ancients. But I was drinking it so often there for a while that my blood clotting time was increased to the point that it was taking me hours to stop bleeding after dental work. So I have pretty much cut it out and only drink it once in a great while. So again don't assume it has no side effects.

I would not recommend yerba mate' for autoimmune disorders. The problem is that mate' contains caffeine, more in the roasted than in the raw. Caffeine weakens the adrenals, which is half of the cause of autoimmune disorders. The other half normally being a microbial trigger. In the case of Crohn's and ulcerative colitis the microbial trigger is mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).
The adrenal glands role in the prevention of autoimmunity is through the production of immune modulating corticosteroids. In proper levels these help the immune system to produce specific high affinity antibodies. A lack of corticosteroids leads the over production of nonspecific low affinity antibodies. Low affinity antibodies tag healthy tissues for destruction by white blood cells because the antibodies cannot differentiate between true antigens and healthy tissue. Caffeine and other stimulants weaken adrenal function leading to lower corticosteroid levels and elevated levels of low affinity antibodies.
In addition Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory conditions. Inflammation is also controlled by corticosteroids produced by the adrenals.
The reason yerba mate' helps with the bleeding and mucous is because of the high tannin content. Tannins are astringent, which controls bleeding and mucous production, but they do nothing towards treating the autoimmune condition.

I have a couple problems with what you said, although I do believe you are entitled to an opinion.
Ever since I've been using Yerba Mate, I have had no symptoms of any kind. My Doctor has told me (after a colonoscopy) that I have no inflammation anymore, when I used to have a severely inflamed colon. To simply dismiss Yerba Mate before even trying it seems naive.
Also, you claim you know the cause of Colitis and Crohn's? Are you a doctor or a scientist? As far as I've been told, nobody knows the cause. It is an auto-immune and inflammatory disease. All of the prescription drugs just target the symptoms by being anti-inflammatories or immuno-modulators. As far as I can tell, Yerba Mate does the same thing (except it actually works), and it has no side effects.
Please don't just dismiss something without even trying it.
And just an FYI, I have not gotten a cold since I have been on Yerba Mate. So, I doubt it is harming me in anyway. In fact, I think it is protecting me.

Okay. Regardless of what you have said, the fact remains that I am symptom free from my colitis and have been over the past year, and the only thing that I changed was adding Yerba Mate into my regimen. I understand that you think it is a coincidence, and that something else has caused my improvement. I could not disagree stronger. I have been tracking everything that I have done to improve my condition, and nothing ever worked. I had always had a moderately inflammed colon, with no remission. The Yerba Mate has put an end to that for over a year (and is still doing so today).
As for your "anything can have side effects arguments," I agree. But, I'm not advising people to drink 25 litres a day. In fact, if you read my first post, you would see that I advised against that, considering I got seriously ill drinking excessive amounts. I drink 1 cup a day.
The point of my post was to inform Colitis/Crohn's sufferers of something that has shown (not just in my case) to be effective in eliminating the symptoms of Colitis and Crohn's. I know what it is like to suffer from this disease. I am unsure if you have had Colitis or Crohn's as well. I told myself that if I ever got rid of it, I would try to help others get well too. I strongly believe Yerba Mate can help.

I like Yerba Mate also. The one thing I notice is that really triggers peristalsis. When I used to do Colon Cleanses with psyllium, the yerba mate would help have regular bm's.
In fact when I have my morning cup, I can pretty much expect to have a BM immediately afterwards. Not that that's all Yerba Mate's good for. I helps my energy levels, concentration etc. Way better than coffee.
One thing that's really good for the colon besides the cleanses is the Budwig Protocol. I have colorectal tumors and Budwig has really helped. Every morning when take the flakseed oil cottage cheese mix, any colon pain just vanishes and feels wonderful.
At one point I was almost completely stopped up and would have had to have colon surgery. I tried Budwig just to see if it would help as a last stab before scheduling surgery and it worked. It's been years and I'm still doing fine - and still doing Budwig.
