He's not a "real" doctor. IMO, a REAL doctor is one that's eternally curious and willing to learn. That short little segment was so full of misinfo that it's pathetic.
First of all, people that are on thyroid meds do much better on armour than they do on synthroid.
Dr oz failed to mention a critical element in thyroid health, Iodine. He also failed to mention suppressors of thyroid function besides raw cruciferous vegetables(and the role of crucifers in thyroid function is debatable).
Suppressors of thyroid function include....
SOY. He recommends steamed tofu? Tofu SUPPRESSES thyroid function. The only soy one should eat is fermented. Miso, tempeh, etc. Do y'all think that Archer Daniels Midland is powerful enough to have a little say so over the content of "health" segments on TV? I do, hence the plethora of soy "food". Soy meat, soy milk, "energy" bars, textured vegetable protein, soy flour. If you're eating processed foods, you don't stand a chance.
FLUORIDE. Most of the U.S. is fluoridated, foodstuffs are fumigated with sulfuryl fluoride, pesticides contain fluoride, drugs are fluorinated compounds.etc, etc, etc. Fluoride is POISON.
BROMIDE. Brominated flour. Brominated vegetable oil. PDBE's. ETC.
CHLORINE. What's in your water?
MERCURY. One drop is enough to contaminate a 5 acre lake, how much is in your fillings?
Omega 6 fatty acids. Yes, the "good" vegetable oils.
High carbohydrate diet. High carbs create blood sugar problems. There is a direct link between hypoglycemia and hypothyroid.
ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS. Heavy metals, herbicides, fungicides, ETC!
He also fails to mention a very accurate way to test your thyroid function, the Broda Barnes basal temperature test, far more accurate than blood tests.
"If there is a deficiency of dietary iodine, the thyroid will not be able to make thyroid hormone. The lack of thyroid hormone will lead to decreased negative feedback on the pituitary, leading to increased production of thyroid stimulating hormone, which causes the thyroid to enlarge (goiter)endemic colloid goiter. This has the effect of increasing the thyroid's ability to trap more iodide, compensating for the Iodine deficiency and allowing it to produce adequate amounts of thyroid hormone."
People, take your iodine. And if you're just starting out, remember that you need to take large doses to displace the fluoride and bromide from receptor sites. Whether you get to the large doses slowly or quickly is up to you, but it really needs to be done.
Isn't Dr. Oz Oprah's pet doctor? I do recall her story about her thyroid travails. It was posted on this forum, many of us commented on the story. Oh, btw, Oprah is a great fan of soy... hmmm.
Oh, he also mentions the "C" word- cancer. What he fails to mention(of course) is that many thyroid cancers are VERY slow growing, they may never affect length of or quality of life.
Dr. Oz is just doing his job, I suppose. Propagating misinfo to keep the patients coming in... rather than sharing real info so that people can actually get well!
aaaarrrrgggghhhh!~ I'm so glad I found CZ:) And all of my teachers here!
