My doctor has advised me to take Xylitol for my overgrowth of Strep in my bowel. Anyone had experience with Xylitol? I have no idea how much I have to take. Does it feed Candida?
Wow! You have a doctor that knows about Xylitol...I am impressed! I just happen to have asked for a copy of the book "The Sweet Miracle of Xylitol" for Christmas.
--------------------
On page 4 in the book it has the following:
Xylitol stops the development of strep bacteria in the mouth and intestines.
On page 7...
The Xylitol molecule contains five carbons and five hydroxyl groups. This makes it a sugar alcohol of the pentol type. Five-carbon sugar alcohols are antimicrobial-they do not support the growth of bacteria. Xylitol actually destroys streptococci and other bacteria, both in the mouth and in the intestines. Six-carbon sugars and sugar alcohols like sucrose (table sugar), however, support the growth of streptococci and other bacteria.
-----------------------
I believe that Xylitol is very anti-fungal...I've been obsessed with coming up with recipes that I can use it in with my husband and grandkids. I use it in gluten-free muffins, pie, crisps, oatmeal, etc. You can get Xylitol gum and mints to use also. My grandkids ask for them every time they see me! The gum and mints are a great way to start using xylitol as your intestines get used to it. You can increase your amount gradually as your body adjusts to it similar to using a prebiotic. I normally use about 1-2 T. with my oatmeal or quinoa cereal. I even sometimes mix it in with my fiber shake. I don't know how much you would need for your purpose, but I think the way it works is that Xylitol prevents bacteria from being able to multiply and stick.
Wow, thank you so much for posting this .. I was beginning to think people were going to hunt me down and hang me by my toes, if I used the words XYLITOL one more time.. it is so nice to hear you back up things I have been saying...
Our dentist turned us onto it... we love it and feel it is a major fighter for Candida.. but it does cause die off and if you do not want to get rid of Candida by diarrhea you should introduce it into your diet slowly.. because it causes the Beast to run like crazy..and DIE (sorry to be graphic..) and it looks and smells like sewer water..
but you will have killed a lot of Candida !
You may get gas as well, so have some extra strenth Papaya pills on hand to help rid your body of the gas.. because the die off can give you really bad gas pain in your stomach.. or what is called indegestion... the best we have found is extra strength papaya by American Health.
I am amazed too that a regular Doctor actually new about it.. Amazing !! Never heard of it for Strep but bet it would work... Keep that Doctor !
Let us know how it works out for ya. I bought some today because I have gum disease and white coated tongue, seems like a win win. I chewed 8 or 9 pieces over 8 hours. I noticed the laxative effect, and when I got home my leg cramped a little, really odd for me? And was peeing alot all day. Maybe it's just me.
Interesting. I started buying xylitol about a year ago to put into hot drinks like tea, but I stopped using it straight b/c it gave me headaches. Now I wonder if that might have been die-off. I still have 1/2 a container left.
Thumbs up for Xylitol. I love the stuff, you honestly can't taste the difference between sugar and xylitol except sugar is way sweeter. You can buy it in a health food store, for anywhere from $6.50 to $7 a lb. bag, or $18-20 for a 2 lb bag. NOW brand is cheaper, Kal brand is more expensive but finer in texture. It's not cheap, that's the only drawback. I love it and have been using it on my cereal and even baked stuff. My family can't tell the difference. I hate stevia, it's horrible. Xylitol is great stuff!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, they say it's antifungal, but who knows, its' certainly not been a cure or anything.
I did a bit of research & a good brand is "xylosweet" & it can be found for a good price at: http://www.vitacost.com
(I'm not affiliated w/either company....just thought I'd pass the info along)
Yeah! I tried that brand at one health food store because it was of course 100% pure and much cheaper than the NOW brand and the KAL brand. I found a 5 lb bag for $27 on Amazon. That's a very good deal!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Lymegirl for pointing that out!!!!! vitacost is good too!
