Post fast, day 1, I had diluted Watermelon juice for the first day. It was kinda too sweet. Yesterday, I had cantaloupe undiluted, it was good. Later that night, my mother, a nurse in a nursing home who has nursed people who have fasted/starved, made me vegetable soup with unrefined Sea Salt . The only thing is she put organic extra virgin olive oil on it. It was heavenly and I felt my strength come back. In fact I feel so much better yet still weak from lack much of fat in my body.
Was the olive oil last night bad (it was closer to day 3 by a few hours)? She didn't use a lot and it was very diluted with much water. I only had a small bowl probably a little more than a cup. There are still some left, can I still have it or should I stick to no oil and a different soup?
Also, when will it be fine for me to eat fruits or veggies without juicing as in solids? I read the entry of refeeding from Dr. Shelton's book in the soilandhealth website and it seems vague like his patients were eating the fruits as a whole by day 3 or 4. I was about to cut the melons into tiny slices right now, but I decided to just juice it. (In case you are wondering, I'm not overeating and trying to sip/masticate as much as possible).
Finally, I have a grapefruit and two starfruits/carambolas. Can I eat the grapefruit (half) at least, or should I still wait?
I have more questions, but I'm kinda sleepy since I only slept a little (brain has been always active lately lol).
Well, THANK YOU to everyone here again for their support/advice/etc. I'll try to be able to respond to everyone this time, you too chiron lol.
It is good to see up and posting. I was starting to worry. After alot of research back in November 2010, I found out there is a system that you should follow during re-feeding. It breaks down, how long you should have a specialized diet i.e. re-feeding period, which I took to be juices and very soft foods as your body re-adjusts back to normal. You should follow this before you really start eating like you normally were before your fast.
I hope this helps. I posted on my blog back in November.
There it is:
1-5 days of fast– one day of specialized diet
6-10 days of fast - two days of specialized diet
11-15 days of fast– three days of specialized diet
16-20 days of fast – four days of specialized diet
21-25 days of fast – five days of specialized diet
26-30 days of fast – six days of specialized diet
31-35 days of fast – seven days of specialized diet
36-40 days of fast – eight days of specialized diet
41-45 days of fast – nine days of specialized diet
46-50 days of fast – ten days of specialized diet
51-55 days of fast – eleven days of specialized diet
I was told that Papaya is really good for eating after a fast, as it is good for the the digestive system. Since you fasted, as you cleaned out the toxins out of your body, you also cleaned out the intestinal flora as well. So you must give your body time to replense/replace it.
Just take it slow. Just remember you are eating, if only a little bit. Your body has to re-adjust to processing food again. It will be easier over time.
Ah, good to hear from you. Nothing like a really good broth, after a water fast, is there? My feeling about the olive oil is that it is fine. Esp. since it was the good stuff, and is after all a plant fat. Would not go into avocados too soon, but it sounds like it was fine for you.
I found after my 29 days that Watermelon was too sweet and also disappointed me, with a cardboard taste. Get the best-quality food you can is my advice, even if it means not eating something you might currently have. You are rebuilding a body, and you want best nutrition.
Some people have sucked on whole oranges after a fast of the length you did, and moved on from there. Some of the old fasters who were supervised ate baked apples right away... (I like the idea of raw blended apples) I would keep going with the broth. See what your appetite tells you about mono fruit meals. Does your body really want a grapefruit? Personally, I don't do well with melons, although the watermelon sounded good. but cucumbers are appealing to me, post-fast.
lemon water would also be appealing.
I feel the most important thing is, not to shock the body with too many different foods too fast.(the broth imv is a good way to work toward juices and whole fruits...then into more veg. etc.
I'll make this quick, I was peeing and I almost fainted. The sound blacked out/visual whitened, and hands vibrating. I feel so bad after feeling happy about today...
Took a shower. Looked at my body and look like a holocaust survivor. I don't even want to guess my body fat percentage. :[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ and the shower made my facial scars reappear/redder. :[[[[[[[[[[[[[ I am however 98lbs, but for 5'6.5'', that ain't much.
Mouth was dry. Afterwards, had broth again and helped somewhat. Drank a glass with it.
I want to know what kind of food/drink will help put fat/reserve into me. It seems like my body is still using my fat and just drinking juice and broth is not enough or maybe I'm not eating as much?. :[ Can I have almond milk or coconut?
Should I add a pinch of Sea Salt to my water and should I drink more water throughout thhe day?
Some info on my refeeding. I only drink around half a glass of juice with a cup of water in the morning. Broth is a small bowl/little over a cup with glass of water. I pee once a day but I want to pee more and clearer. Stool is moving, but don't want to expel yet. Can I wait till it hardens?
Sorry this is embarrassing and unorganized. This is a lot harder than I thought. I will make a new account because this one wasn't suppose to be so serious. In case people don't know by now, I am a 21 year old guy because I never responded in my thread and didn't want to cause confusion. People call me Blaise.
I'm sorry Sacristia/chiron for not responding but please wait until I get this sorted out, my brain is tired. I apppreciate your responses so much and to anyone who can and has given advice, A HUGE THANK YOU.
You are male and are 98 pounds and 5ft 6?
wow just wow.
You are not going to gain much weight doing juice and broth compared to actual solid food. Actual solid food gets the stomach going and weight gain depends on several things.
First you can gain back water weight if you take in food with sodium and eat carbs. Both make you gain water.
I gained back about 10 pounds or so on refeed. Now 5 weeks post fast am sitting around 7 pounds from lowest weight post fast.
To gain back more weight you need to eat more calories a day then you burn up. At 98 pounds you don't need too much calories a day to start gaining your burn rate is likely 1200 a day. Mine at 220 is more like 2500 day and I am 5ft 6.
So to gain roughly pound week you need extra 3500 calories a week. Simple math.
So break the juice broth thing already and start eating solid food. some fruit and vegetables first for few days .I went right to salad with some chicken in it first day refeed and have ate some meat usually small amounts almost every single day since. No negative effects that I have seen and doing weights and my weights are similar or even higher than prefast numbers. so didn't lose much muscle and gaining what did lose back quick.
You can keep weight down artificially by not eating anything with sodium and really cutting down on carbs but again that is mostly just water weight we are talking about.
So start eating solid food and quit fasting into starvation the next time around. Do you have major medical problems you are trying to cure with fasting? Cancer something like that? Otherwise you have not much need to fast to the levels you are fasting. Obviously you are not fasting for weight loss you could easily weigh 140 maybe 130 if you are thin boned and have no muscle mass.
Seriously give your head a shake man. Go slowly but surely back to solid food. And eat normally and gain that weight back. Or your friends will have you hospitalized for being anorexic.
and if you want to gain some weight back quicker you can drink a lot of calories.
pretty easy to drink calories. seriously best wishes take care of yourself.
please do not worry about "responding" personally. That's not what this place is about, in its best spirit imv.
(nor I)
Re-feeding can be delicate. Best not to look too much at the body, in the early days. :-) Have faith, it'll come back. That said, I (personally) would try baths instead
for awhile, and be very careful with sudden moves.
These moments of extreme weakness are common. Be very gentle. You can eat more than broth as soon as you feel you can! (self listening and self-trust) If that sounds cavalier it's not meant to.
Have some coconut water, and have some of the young meat (which is soft, like raw fish.) In fact, young coconuts
are the best food, after mother's milk. And very healing for kidneys and all...
The old (dark bron) ones are more work, grating and pressing...and not nearly so perfectly balanced.
Young coconuts have/are a perfect electrolyte solution.
Then, all kinds of greens. I would blend or juice them, or do a mix of blending/juicing. The main thing is to add your saliva and your 'blessing' : meaning, go easy,
go slow, go gently.
Go lightly.

PS If you want a number, to feel more certian--in 2 days you can feel free to eat avocado, gently, and whatever plant foods youwant. That's my gut feeling. Maybe even a little concentrated protein. Such as sardines, if you eat them. with lemon. I don't know what food you eat that is good for you. Don't worry about the weight. Miso soup might be very nourishing....and strengthening. (good plan these days)
I would not go back to SAD food and processed cheeses, bread meat and that sort of thing. You can start to have soups though,(with veg. and not just the broth). In fact, a lot of things can be good and fine--it's all about not binging on anything--and keeping it simple.
