I am due to have dental surgery in a few days and as I have a mitral valve prolapse (heart murmur) I have to take a large dose of antibiotics just prior to surgery. It is done intravenously instead of tablets so it bypasses the stomach. Dr Mercola (www.mercola.com) suggests that taking the antibiotics are probably unnecessary but I'm not informed enough to make that decision. I have been on anti candida protocol for 4 months and it has been a very slow process (I know I still haven't gotten rid of it) so any suggestions as to how to support the system after the surgery. I make my own kefir and cultured vegetables and also take probiotics. I guess if I load up on them as soon as possible after the surgery and hope it will do the job so I'm not back to square one.
By the way - this forum is a treasure trove of info. Picking up lots of little hints and tips (thanks helmax, I think, for the tip about Colloidal Silver for irritated eyes. Second day and it is working a treat :-) Just waiting on nasal spray.)
IV antibiotics are one of the worst things you can do to yourself. I had IV antibiotics administered a decade ago when I was hospitalized for cellulitis (long story, my own fault through self-abuse) and I believe that that is part of the reason my health eventually crashed as it did. IV antibiotics kills off your beneficial flora in droves. Think oral antibiotics times 100.
Also, I don't understand why having a heart valve problem would require one to take large doses of antibiotics before surgery. Antibiotics are to ward off bacterial infections. Is it as some sort of preventative measure? What is the rationale?
Don't suppose you are seeing a holistic dental surgeon?
It is my understanding that conventional conservative dentists suggest strong antibiotics before surgery if you have had any replacements or surgeries. On my own I researched this some for my former employer (I was her personal assistant). She religiously took strong antibiotics before any dental work because she had had a hip replacement (she was a very wealthy VIP treated red carpet at Mayo) and she never had any problems after her dental work.
Another friend of my husband who had a hip replaced had very bad consequences for NOT Taking Antibiotics before his dental surgery. It put him in a wheel chair for the rest of his life!
I pray someone here knows of some powerful natural helps or what to take before and after antibiotics if that is what you decided you have to do.
You don't have much time to prepare yourself for your surgery - can it be rescheduled until you study this more? I always hate to find out better helps "after the fact".
I would ask experts here and your doctors if it would be ok to up antioxidants and take tons of garlic (a natural antibiotic) and perhaps a whole food based Vitamin C (like Pure Radiance C by The Synergy Company http://www.thesynergycompany.com/pure_radiance.html.
#13. Do not take Vitamin C the day of dental procedures. Vitamin C by mouth will shorten the effect of the dental anesthetic to literally around 10 minutes- after that, it is Painsville. The IV form of Vitamin C does not do this for reasons unknown, but even 500 milligrams in the tablet form will detoxify the anesthetic adequately to let you feel the pain of drilling or surgery.
It would seem reasonable to me for you to keep up with the support of good flora.
Two really knowledgeable reps one at Whole Foods and one at a local health food both recommended Jarrow BRAND, 'Non-Dairy' SACCHAROMYCES BOULARDII+MOS, MannanOligoSaccharides, a vegetarian probiotic supplement to me before and during a round of strong Amoxicillin I took for possible h pylori and Lyme.
I pray you have a successful and healthy procedure!
Apparently they want you on antibiotics in case any of the bacteria in your mouth enter your bloodstream. I can see the rationale behind it but it is an unfortunate situation. I agree with Grace in that it may be worth it to see if you can find a reputable holistic practitioner who may have a way to do it without antibiotics.
My brother just took one round of antibiotics after having a root canal done and is having intestinal problems weeks after taking them. Mercola just did a article on antibiotics and was saying that one or two strong courses of antibiotics can kill up to 30% of your friendly bacteria. That is alarming! I would rather avoid the antibiotics than cause that much damage to the flora.
I know that's true because I lived it (as have many others on here). Supposedly a healthy person has several pounds worth of beneficial flora in their digestive tracts. Receiving antibiotics through an IV must kill off that flora by the billions. That explains why, after receiving IV antibiotics, I started catching colds constantly and also got food poisoning at least once a year.
Thanks all. Reason behind the antibiotics with heart murmur is if any bacteria get into the blood it will be taken to the heart and cause serious problems/death. This is what I have been told by medical prof. (Yet if I cut myself or have any other surgery I don't need antibiotics. Go figure!!!)
I am seeing an holistic dentist to remove Amalgams but the reason for going to this particular dentist is because it is an implant that he did incorrectly some years ago so he is fixing it for fraction of the cost. Had second opinion from another dental surgeon - he wants to remove implant. No thanks - not going down that track.
I've known about having to have this surgery for some time but can't find anything to support the theory about not taking the antibiotics - apart from what Dr Mercola wrote. Guess i'll just hit it with megadoses of probiotics.
NB I'm also using MMS protocol, which I have found is the only thing that actually has any significant effect on candida. Fingers crossed!
