Hyperthyroid Alternatives Forum
Hello everyone, I am suffering from hyperthrodism and I am supposed to get the RAI treatment on friday,I decided not to have it done, Ijust had second thoughts about getting it done because I have heard that it can make you hypothyroid, and having other effects that arent good,I am praying to god that I did the right thing by not getting it done, my mother also begged me not to get it done, she instead told me to try some natural meds for this, anyway she brought me tons of stuff to take for it, I am just praying that I made the right choice because this thyroid is affecting my heart, I take 3 toprol a day and my left arm gets very numb,I will continue taking the tapazole that i am on, and the natural meds, I am paying that this heps, please let me know if you guys have gotten cured using a natural approach to this thanks

Hello Vanessa, I think you are wise to hold off on RAI for a while until you try something else.My doctor insisted that I had RAI but I have resisted so far. I have been hyper for 4 years and only started meds 2 weeks ago. I dont know if they are working yet since I did not get any blood test as yet. I found the website ithyroid helpful. I have started taking copper supplement along with calcium, magnesium and others..Good luck

All hyperthyroid patient will start with anti-thyroid drugs(ATD) like PTU or methimazole(Tapazole). You may take some beta-blocker drugs as well to slow down your heart rate. If ATD does not work, then doctor will push you into radioactive Iodine treatment(RAI). I was one of the hyperthyroid patient myself. I did not take radioactive iodine treatment. RAI destroys your thyroid, and possibly leads to a host of problems. Most doctors in North America push RAI and make it sound like no big deal -- I don't buy it. RAI puts you at higher risk of developing the eye disease, and that is something I'm hoping to avoid, or at least minimize if it comes. When you get into the senario, please think hard before you take RAI. Here is some info for not taking RAI http://valkyrie.aarg.net/ and http://valkyrie.aarg.net/top20.html.
I was diagnosed to have hyperthyroidism in April 2000. My condition was pretty bad, TSH was close to 0 and Free T4 was greater than 120. My heart beated 110 - 120 per minute. My Dr. told me to take the RAI right away since it was hard for a patient like me to get into remission by taking ATD. I did not agree with her and started to take Methimazole first with the highest dose a person can take a day, 60 mg daily. I took ATD for three months. In these three months, I went to the emergency room twice for rash in my skin. I also took the zinc and copper mineral therapy with the ATD, but stopped it after 3 days. I just did not feel right with it.
After taking ATD for three months, there was nothing changed. My condition did not improve nor worsen. My Dr. told me I should get better after three months, but I did not. I was feeling very bad and afraid that I would die in the bed one day because of my rapid heart rate. I had the beta-blocker with me, but I did not take it once because I did not like to take too much medicine at one time. I stopped taking ATD after three months. Instead, I was taking Chinese herbal drugs that my mother brought to me from China.
The herbal drugs were effective at first, I got a lot better after taking them. My heart rate dropped to 80 per minute in a month. I took them for about a year and half. Then the problem came. Several times when I tried to stop the herbal drugs to see if I was ok. the result was I was not OK. When I stopped the herbal drugs, the hyperthyroid came back and got worse.
Then, I know the herbal drugs were not the final solution for my thyroid problem. I was so scared at that time since there would not be any choice left for me to choose. It looked like the only choices for me were RAI or surgery. but I really did not like the idea of destroying the thyroid and being a sick person for my whole life. I did a lot of research and heard a lot of bad things about RAI. If I had to choose between RAI and surgery. I would choose surgery.
In June 2002, my mother told there were a doctor in Beijing, China who could cure hyperthyroidism. With little hope, I flighted back to see the doctor at the end of July, 2002. The doctor's name is Dr. Gao. He gave me a plaster to apply on the neck where the thyroids are and told me that his plaster had been used for more than 30 years and on more than 60,000 people and worked. Well, I just took his words and did not feel too excited about it at that time. I hoped he was right but got ready for disappointment because I had tried all methods that I thought I should have tried, still no use. Within 10 days, I felt the efficacy of the plaster. Before using the plaster, my heart was pounding so hard that I hardly got into sleep. After using the plaster for 10 days, the pounding was gone. The plaster indeed worked. After 5 months, my TSH and Free T4 were normal. My eyes were not scared of light any more and I gained weight. My pulse is 72 beats per minute at night and my bowel movement is once a day or once two days. Actually, I am just feeling like a normal person again. I am off the plaster for 3 months now, just did a blood test two weeks ago, TSH is 17.0 ( normal is 10 - 20).
I am jogging for half an hour every day. just to build up a good body. and try to have a good life habit, like sleeping early and get up early and so on. Hopefully, the hyperthyroidism won't come back again.
