  • OP and root canals by  Jenifer  20 mon  1,887  Oil Pulling / Dental Hea

Recently my son underwent a root canal (he didn't tell me he was going for it. Oh well, what's done is done). The endodontist informed him the infection could migrate to his jaw. I remembered what MrCuddly said once, that OPing was essential after having a root canal. I went searching and found this thread, which I forwarded to my son:

God Bless OP (and this forum)!!

Thanks for the props, but that was from our fearless leader (and forum moderator) Molly Bloom. Hopefully when she comes up for air after her intensive ND studies she'll be back to spread exponentially more wisdom on the forum.

Did your son take your advice? If so, can I get your to talk to mine? ;)

I did advise my son (again) to do OP. He seemed to agree with me, but who knows if he will follow through. If he does, I'll ask him if he'll talk to your kids. :-)

Actually the poster who got the "RR" rating in that thread
was "larx" and Molly replied. And when I mentioned you in my previous post, I meant something you said to me in another thread a while ago, that OP was especially important if you have root canals. When I learned of my son's root canal and what the endodontist said to him, I went looking for more specific info and found that thread.
So Molly is studying to be a naturopath? Good for her! I was wondering where she was.
Well, as long as I'm here, I have a question. I posted about OP at another forum that I frequent, and a number of people are doing it. One of them is using this product, Oralive:http://www.ascendedhealth.com/gum-disease/gum_disease_remedy.htm

She's swishing with it and then, as advised at that site, she is _swallowing_ it. As I understand it, the purpose of OP is to _pull_ the toxins from the mouth, and thus you would not want to swallow it. What do you think, could one pull with this product? If so, should it be swallowed? Or would it be best to pull with an oil, and use the Oralive separately, for a shorter period of time?

You're right. Bacteria is attracted to oil which is one reason oil pulling works. And you definitely HAVE to not only spit out the oil when you're done but also thoroughly rinse your mouth afterwards.

That product isn't an oil at all and appears to be a clay with some additives. I'll swish around clay often when I have some kind of mouth infection or tooth pain. Between that and oil pulling with a few drops of oregano oil, any kind of mouth infection you can imagine is taken out. Bentonite clay is powerful stuff.

But keep in mind this is a completely different thing than oil pulling with different benefits and results. If the product is mostly clay (which I'm sure it is) it actually IS ok to swallow it (as long as it's quality food grade clay). The great thing about clay is that it binds with germs, toxins, metals, etc and doesn't release them back into your system. It gets eliminated with the toxins still bound, and when it comes out it looks a lot like it did going in.

Clay is good for absorbing infections etc but won't touch what oil pulling can do for general oral health.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the clarification about why it's fine to swallow the clay. The person I mentioned at the other forum thinks Oralive is (in her words) "the next step up" from OP. She's going on about the benefits of Oralive which according to the website Ascended Health, are:

            Whitens teeth
Inhibits bacteria that cause cavities, plaque and gingivitis
Alleviates gum pain and gum bleeding
            Eliminates bad breath

The benefits sound about the same as with OPing, huh? If that is all true, as far as I can see, the main difference
with OP is that it's a lot cheaper, which is reason enough for me personally to stick with it. But do you think you could clarify your position that you think such products as Oralive can't touch OP for oral health benefits? Thanks!

P.S. More info posted at that other forum on Oralive:

Oralive natural oral regenerative paste is made from the earth, oxygen, natural anti-microbiol oils, trace oils from the ocean, and ancient probiotic bacteria. There is no soap in it, so you won't experience any foam like you do with other toothpastes. Nor, does it contain any fluoride. It is also a vegan product.

If you are aware of the benefits of taking probiotics for your digestive health, think of Oralive as a probiotic supplement for your mouth cavity. Although, to be precise, Oralive contains prebiotics, not probiotics. Ben Goodwin, Ascended Health Nutritional Consultant, explained the difference between prebiotics and probiotics when I asked him if I could use Oralive as a substitute for probiotic capsule I routinely take at dinnertime. His answer was "No, the Oralive should not be used as a replacement for your daily probiotics. The Oralive contains prebiotics but not probiotics, the difference being that prebiotics are an optimal food for probiotics but not actually living bacteria."

Ingredients as listed on the label are:

            Natural magnetic healing earth
            high vibrational energies
            coral calcium
            ground lemurian crystals
            quartz
            oxygen
            ocean trace minerals
ancestral probiotics from volcanic microbial soil

I'd be interested to know how this person considers it the next step up from oil pulling. As you say, their benefits are exactly what you get from oil pulling (which has been used for hundreds if not thousands of years). Teeth whitening depends on the oil, but coconut works great.

Of course the obvious answer is if you're interested in trying it - try it! Aside from the cost, I doubt there's anything harmful - and swishing with clay DOES have benefits. I know I do it myself if I have some kind of mouth pain or tooth infection. And for that it seems to work slightly faster than OP with oregano oil. So if when there's significant pain I use both and it knocks it out quickly.

The one caveat is I'm suspicious of swishing with clay on a regular basis. It is drawing power is amazing, but it takes the good and bad alike, making you need to supplement back in the good stuff. I don't know what specific nutrients/minerals the mouth needs, but I'll bet these people don't either. Clay is VERY depleting. OP is gentle and non-depleting and has been used for hundreds if not thousands of years with great results.

The second thing I'm suspicious of is that also because of clays powerful drawing action, any supplements you add to it stay binded in the clay and never make it into your body. That's why clay is such a good detox, it grabs the toxins, binds them and won't let them go until they're excreted. This is also why you should never take supplements any time near when you're coming clay - they just get absorbed by the clay.

So most of the additives they're talking about will never make it into your body.

Will it ever be BETTER for the gums than oil pulling? I couldn't imagine how. And after your teen years, cavities aren't as important and gums become all important for oral health.

Here are my thoughts on the ingredients:

Natural magnetic healing earth - clay
              high vibrational energies - clay
              coral calcium - why?
ground lemurian crystals - huh? probably found in clay
quartz - how does that help?
oxygen - could help if released from the clay (doubtful) but OP also oxygenates
ocean trace minerals - nothing specific to oral health and would never be released form the clay anyway
ancestral probiotics from volcanic microbial soil - clay

Sorry for all the writing - sleepless night..

Ha, you certainly don't need to apologize for the length of your post, your input is very valuable.

So while you think swishing with clay works great on occasion, you think doing it on a daily basis is problematic and can be depleting. I'll share your post with that forum member who is so into this stuff, sounds like she and others who are using it may need to be aware of this.

Many thanks, and sleep well tonite!

It's interesting that you know exactly that it's clay from the description but they never really name it. That's a red flag for me. Also don't discount the fact that the people you're talking to really work for the company. Their response to how depleting clay is will be a tip-off.

If they tell you that is why the other ingredients are included, they're misleading you. If they really wanted to replenish what you lose through depletion, they would have it as a seperate supplement that you don't take within 6 hours of the clay.

I haven't been in communication with the sellers of this product. The person I mentioned, who suggested Oralive is "the next step up" from OPing, is a member at another forum where a number of people have started OPing after my posting about it. She was using Oralive herself and she may have high hopes for it, but I don't think she has any financial interest in it. Anyway, I posted your previous message about the depleting aspect of the clay, and she didn't argue or say anything. Possibly you gave her food for thought.

Again, really appreciate your input on this. From what you say, I don't think the product is worth the cost, even if swishing with clay is a good thing to do on occasion.

I must agree with the other user who is advocating the use of Oralive. I have been having horrible pain in my upper and lower teeth that radiates to my jaw for about a month. My dentist did x-rays and used that weird light on me but could not find any fractures or abscesses on the roots of my teeth. She prescribed me one antibiotic which did not help at all and a pain pill (Lorcet) which also didn't help. After two weeks she prescribed me Keflex and scheduled me for a root canal the following week. I had tried oil pulling multiple times during this ordeal to no avail. It just made my mouth tired.

The day before my dentist ordered my root canal, I found Extra Strength Oralive and Super Gum Healing Oil on-line, quite by accident, while looking for a good source of wood-pulp derived MSM. I ordered all three from the company I found and received them yesterday. The informational material said most people have a resolution of pain within 24-48 hours. Well, I wasn't convinced but I was certainly hopeful, since I had gotten to the point where I was taking an Excedrin every 1-2 hours and getting up in the middle of the night at least once to take more pain medicine. I am somewhat concerned about my liver at this point!

I started using the products about noon yesterday and the pain continued unabated. Yesterday evening the top and bottom teeth ached so much that I put some of the Super Gum Healing Oil on a Q-tip and pushed it into the back of my jaw, right where the dentist inserts the needle when she is numbing my back teeth. And, wonder of wonders, within about half an hour, both back teeth stopped aching. The relief lasted about three or four hours before it began again, so I took some Excedrin and went to bed. I brushed my teet and gums with Extra Strength Oralive and made up a new Q-tip with the Super Gum Healing Oil. I put that in my jaw and would occasionally wake up and rub it across my gums before placing it back against my jaw.

This morning, for the first time in a month, I woke up with NO TOOTH/NERVE PAIN!!! Of course, it didn't last and I did take some Excedrin this morning but I have had no more pain medicine since (it is now about 3 pm). Every time my teeth start to hurt I take a little Oralive and Gum Oil, or just the Gum Oil, and swish it in my mouth as long as I can (usually 2-5 minutes), then swallow it. Yes, you swallow it, because it is GOOD for you!

I am definitely cancelling my root canal. One way or another, I am certainly NOT having it this week as scheduled. Hopefully, I will NEVER have to reschedule it, because I have read too many things about the dangers of root canals. If you worry about the price of Oralive or Super Gum Healing Oil, the company I got mine from has a 100% money-back guarantee. Not that I'll be using that, because I AM KEEPING MINE.

              Yours in Good Health,

              KnowledgeSeeker1966
