Wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I'd just put it in this catch-all forum. Sorry if it's the wrong place. We adopted a rescue about 10 days ago. She is a very sweet girl, but has had a hard life. She's only about a year and a half old (bichon/poodle mix), but was living in an animal hoarder situation with 5 other dogs. She was in a horrendous states when animal control got her. Anyway, she is with us now, doing relatively well (we've hired a trainer to help her with a few fixable leash pulling problems), but the main thing is, though potty trained, she won't go to the bathroom in our yard. We live in AZ and unfortunately the house we are renting has a crappy yard for a dog. It's all smallish rocks (about the size of a quarter or fifty cent piece) and she has really little paws. Her foster family had all grass and she has no potty issues there. She will go to the bathroom when we take her to the park, even when we take her to a dirt road near our house which also has rocks.
We've tried the spray which is supposed to make them want to go in the spot you spray it, and the fake potty grass and nothing has worked. It's not horrible right now having to walk a few blocks to take her, but once the heat arrives in a month or two, taking her out several times a day in the heat is going to be hard. There are also several neighbors that just let their dogs run freely and being so little, I don't like them getting up in her face, everytime I need to take her out. Just wondering if anyone has any tips to make her want to go in our yard. Thanks.
Try putting some of her droppings in the yard until she gets the idea. Even where she urinates in dirt scoop some up and put it there too. Sounds gross but it usually works.
