i am convinced that leaving them alone is the ONLY cure! the more you exfoliative them the more trauma you are causing to them hence they will not heal!, lets say you get a scratch on your arm, after a while a thick skin is formed and then it just comes off by itself if you keep taking off the hard skin without it being fully healed the hard skin will keep forming therefore it becomes a cycle, our lips i believe work the same way! what do you guys think? when i leave my lips alone the hard skin just comes off naturally byitself in the shower
Totally agree with you. What I don't understand is why things like aquaphor, blistex, etc. don't speed up the process. They all mask the symptoms but never seem to heal it completely. I'm only afflicted on my bottom lip and, as I've progressed, the cycle sped up a lot. I now go through a full peel (from white dry skin to yellow crust peeling off on its own) in one day. As you said it comes off in the shower and, if I leave it alone, it feels slightly better each time. Hopefully it stops completely soon. Leaving it alone is the ONLY way.
i agree leaving the skin on and letting it come off on its own is the best approach, however what about the whiteness for example after u come out of the shower or brush your teeth and the skin is all white if you dab a towel on it you can take off some of the white buildup while keeping the skin attached to the lip, with seemingly no trauma to the lips, and a thinner layer of unhealthy skin on the lips which still peels per cycle. what do u guys think?
i wouldnt suggest doing that, as new skin forms under the hard skin, if you take out the hard skin with towel, you will ruin your progress, life sucks now i have SEVERE acne and now severe exfoliative chelitis, ive lost so much weight now too! this is taking over my life
I know that I went through a stress period in which I was pulling my lips out, as a lot of here, but I trully think that these kinds of flakes/crusts appear after started applying, in first, a kind of these commercial lip balms, which are just shit.
I agree with you, above all about all those creams which are totally useless, which sweep away that semi-dead skin and just feed the lips condition without healing it at all.
I am aware of the particular area which are the lips, the specific resiliency like no other, which explains the long time of healing but I can not clearly believe that this healing can take over several years, it's just about vermillon rebuilding and the vascularization in lips area is particulary intense, so it normally should not take so long.
I am 20, my symptoms started at the end of 2009. Since, my life has strongly decreased in quality. This has completely broken me down and I should not be in this situation, at all. I am 20 and this crap is wasting my life.
At the beginning, I was laughing about it, thinking it would take a few weeks to get my normal lips back...Today, I still have this poison, and I laugh much less.
What terribly frustrates me is that I realize that I have been more a client than a patient for these dermatologists and as soon as I say theirs creams are totally useless and just hide one symptom, either they reply me I am wrong and telling me there is an improvement, or they send me to a psychiatrist.
This condition has totally disguised myself as a mad man from this f****** medicine and of course, my entourage begins to look at me thinking that 'Oh yeah, finally, he is maybe crazy and he's fighting against an illusion in his mind'
I am 20, my life has failed for the past two years and I wonder how I can still find hope to get rid of this crap.
I really want to be healed and shut all the f***ing mouthes, once and for all.
i cant live with this condition all my life, enough is enough!
i havnt gone to school in 2 weeks now, leaving them alone is not helping either, lips are just heavily damaged
We all feel your pain, but two weeks is not enough time to be "cured" of this. I'd suggest you go to a dermatologist first, regardless of what any one on here says about doctors, and see if they can treat you. Most likely, they'll give you hydrocortisone or a topical steroid. Maybe you''ll get lucky and it'll work for you. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibility. Otherwise, take it from someone who's had this for over a year, doing nothing has been the ONLY way I saw improvement (top lip no longer peels and bottom is slowly improving). You need to find the cause (could be an allergy to something or reaction to an oral care product. Regardless of what some people have said/are trying on here I highly doubt it's internal so don't go out of your way to have some colon cleanse or crazy thing like that) and eliminate that product. Then it's a waiting game. How long will it take? I don't know. Look for minor improvements to find the right path, not a quick fix.
my inside of the mouth is always white, my upper lip is always swollen and hurts! does that happen to you guys too, and i am convinced that leasving them alone is the only cure and will take a long time as the skin is so delicate
My mouth is never white except when it is dry, so in the morning, like all people and it's totally normal. Once the saliva production comes back, I have no whiteness at all.
My upper lip was always swollen (1/3), also my lower one (2/3), when I was using creams which always remove skin from my lips so it's normal that it hurts given that there is a lack of skin, the vermillon in this case.
As I say, it's really weird to take a time so long to heal, that's why I'm trully convinced that, like others matters, there are optimal conditions to heal as quickly as possible.
I'm sure that it's a very trivial problem, that's why just very few people, ourselves included, are concerned, and because of, above all, the wrong way with which dermatologists and doctors have tried to treat it.
For the most of us, we went through a stress period mixed with a chapped lips period in which we had had the mistake of pulling out our lips, CHRONICALLY.
Hence, it's totally normal to have some kind of flakes which grow up but instead of waiting, we had again had the mistake of applying something on our lips, in my case it was a commercial lipbalm in first, and from there, a vicious circle had settled down, and this did not settle when we started to consult some doctors and dermatologists, apply all theirs shits of chemicals, on the contrary, this even did get worse.
my top lip is extremely swollen since 2 months now!, my lips grew 3 times in since, i am always in pain, i dont know what to do now ive tried protopic hydrocortisone, all kinds of lip balms, multivitamins, all kinds of oils, i cant live like this im not allergic to anything, it just sucks that i cant even smile
first try 0.1 protopic 3 times daily for 6 days, then switch to twice daily. in the meantime schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon to have a mucosal biopsy, depending on the results you may be interested in considering Lamprene (taken orally) if inflammation does not subside using protopic
once this condition has started it is impossible to go back! it took your lips 20 years to get to where they were, just gotta accept this now and move on i guess, leaving them alone will take about years for them to be fully healed
@KuNFuZed yes protopic compeletely got rid of the inflammation, but the peeling cycle still goes on. I used it 3 times a day for the first 6 days, then twice a day for the following 3 months, now i usually use it once a day. I no longer get inflammation on my lips. i used to be so inflamed people would ask why my lips were purple. also, while using protopic try not to use any other lip products.
@149911 i somewhat agree however the inflammation aspect of the condition is more easily cured than the infamous peeling cycle/skin turning white
There is a nuance about the inflammation, this one is just the consequence of the lack of skin and not the contrary.
It is normal to have a kind of redness like a scald if the vermillion of your lips is damaged.
The disappearing of the inflamamation is just due to the over-saturation of the skin by those creams, whatever chemical.
If you have a scald on the skin and that you constantly remove the layer of regeneration, you would always have this color difference, as a result of this skin mutilation constantly feeds by these creams.
It's not by treating the redness that your peeling cycle will go away.
If we all are here, it is because of all those shits of chemicals have been totally useless, have damaged even more our condition, so it will be not an other cream among the dozen we have already used which will resolve the problem.
Any which way, the made up of applying whatever chemical by saturating the skin, as well as doing this with friction by the finger massage will not can enable the extra-fine layer of the mucous membrane, which is the vermillion, to rebuild properly.
KuNFuZed,
If the inside of your mouth is always white, you might have a serious yeast infection. I had one too at one point during my EC years. My lips were especially painful and swollen then. You should go to a doctor and have it checked out. After I was treated for yeast and fungus, the white mouth went away, and the pain and swelling got quite a bit better. I still had EC of course.
I think the yeast infection was brought on by my constant need to smear on thick oils on my lips every hour or so. And often I would use dirty fingers when smearing on the oils. Yeast and other fungus are all over our environment, and when we put it on our lips and cover it with oils and creams, it creates the ideal environment for the fungus to grow.
