As far as unsanitary conditions, there are no "ewwww" issues that I have been exposed to, like cleaning bathrooms.
Since around the age of 19-21, I have been sort of OCD. Not clinical OCD, but for example I do not eat at bake sales, do not touch banisters, use the sanitary wipes at groceries, use a napkin to hold coffee pot at work, etc. It might sound excessive, but honestly I was always just careful at work. I did handle paperwork from many employees, I worked in my flower beds, and always found cat poop in there, I had a racoon in my attic, and helped clean out the mess (poop), and I lived, many years, unaware of parasites. I also have a dog.
So, I gave up trying to find the source, I just figure it does not matter. I was exposed, and I will never know where. It could be a shopping cart, or a flyer from a mailman. There is no way of knowing really,
I am doing some research currently because of what I worked in and I am finding that there is little information about the materials I was handling daily.
As far as your reply, you gave some very good information that are all possible ways. I do wonder, because of what I have read, if you may have started with a sinus infection that would not go away. It is possible to inhale ova. Poop is a great way to get these parasites.
I don't think you are obsessive with your habits. I think you make good sense. You gave me a tip or two. Thanks much!
Hi, I am meant to have Strongyloides and yes I am always asking how I could have got it!Stronyloides is a third world desease and the parasite is native to the tropics. places like India, South Africa, Thailand etc
Farm workers are meant to be much more exposed to parasites. I never was a farm worker but I kept horses for two decades so I was regularly up to my armpits in dung. I fed them treats by hand and would think nothing of letting them lick my hands for salt.
I was a keen waterskier, and here in the UK we ski alot in lakes...
I am a keen gardener. it goes without saying that you can be in constant contact with worms, snails and slugs. yes I would wear gloves, but there is always the time you sneeze or blow your nose and hands go to the face dirty gloves and all!
But non of this should result in strongyloides, because they are not supposed to be in our lakes and gardens in the UK!
The next thing I considered was my husband. he served in the Armed forces overseas in the far east for 5 yrs. many of the prisoners of war who were imprisoned by the Japanese returned with Strongyloides. he was trsted and came back negative, so I cannot blame him.
I am just wondering if I contracted it from digging in my garden in Spain- the Balearic Islands! what if emmigrating birds flew back from South Africa or India to my garden in Spain and their droppings contained eggs!
I could go on like this all day and I will never find the answer!
Most people don't even know they have them, much less how they got there. I don't think there is anyway, probably, to avoid them completely. Everytime you shake hands, touch a public bathroom door or grocery cart, sometimes when you just inhale air, you can pick up bugs.
It is good to be thinking of ways to eliminate contact with them as much as possible, but since I think we can never avoid them altogether it seems the best thing is just to kill them and do ongoing maintenance for any "newcomers". They are so insidious. That's how they survive.
