I am trying to find out if probiotics come into conflict with oil pulling. Oil pulling is as powerful as chlorhexidine and some BLIS K12 products are sold with chlorhexidine. That leads me to believe oil pulling and probiotics are safe together. However, oil pulling is meant to destroy bacteria so I'm weary that the good probiotics in the mouth will be destroyed as well. I've looked all over the internet and couldn't find anything on the matter. My research led me to this site. Asking this question has brought me here. I'm hoping you all can assist me in this question. To find out oil pulling would be rendering any probiotic treatment for oral health useless, would be disappointing.
Let me suggest a couple of things here and suggestions they are only. Firstly I do not know BLISK12 so cannot comment directly.
There is an issue here as I read it. Probiotics (MO'S)are usually not intended to be absorbed by the body but rather live inside the digestive tract/gut. So using lingual absorption may not be relevant. That said there could be some MO's which are absorbed via lingual absorption. No-one would know for certain.
The first point of inquiry I suspect would be to identify the MO's you are getting from BLISK12 and ask the producer what are the usual modes of assimilation.
Your comment here:
"Oil pulling is as powerful as chlorhexidine." How do you know this?
jenifer have you tried xylitol with oil. I recognise that absorption of xylitol is not an issue as I understand it. So assuming xylitols own bacteria fighting talents I suspect that they may be mutually supportive. I shall try that myself.
Here on is all conjecture:
On the issue of dumping/swallowing detox and assimilation
The given reason for dumping the oil is the contaminants, mouth Bacteria (Mo's) and HM's, are in the oil and swallowing them is bad. That is only true if they can be reabsorbed or able to on-culture in the case of MO's. How likely is that?
The Mo's will only on-culture if the conditions are suitable for them. The other gut MO's may well control them, not to mention the effects of stomach acid and the fact that those Mo's are already either "controlled" by the stomach acid or the gut already. Isn't that what is happening now anyway?
The reassimilation of HM's? I am assuming that Hm's are detoxed into the mouth which is unproven as I understand it. The reabsorption will depend on what degree of mineral lockup is available in the digestive tract. There are a number of substances which can do this and their presence or otherwise will influence HM reabsorption.
T2, yes, I often add xylitol to my OPing, it's nice with coconut oil. I posted about this here some time ago. I also swish with xylitol itself for a few min. at a time.
Could you tell me what MO and HM stands for? The gist of your post as I understand it, is that swallowing the oil after OPing is probably not going to hurt us. You may be right, on the other hand there may be an important psychological element to spitting it out, getting rid of the "bad stuff."
MO(s) = micro-organism (s) HM (s) = Heavy Metal (s)
MO's includes probiotics.
Jenfier: """The gist of your post as I understand it, is that swallowing the oil after OPing is probably not going to hurt us."""
Provided the supports are in place (ie bowel supports for HM's) and the assumptions re Mo's I suggest are correct.
Jenifer:"""You may be right, on the other hand there may be an important psychological element to spitting it out, getting rid of the "bad stuff"."""
Interesting comment. Not being a "spitter" I do not relate to this sentiment easily. Indeed as a child I was puzzled and couldn't understand when I saw some-one spitting. And possibly related I never understood why anyone would want to wash a child's mouth out with soap for swearing. (I am not imputing these sentiments to you but merely commenting on your observation.) No tabacco chewing here either.
My xylitol trial goes along fine thanks to you. T2
Ha, I don't think most who spit out their swishes are "spitters" per se, but the general idea is that it pulls toxins from the mouth, and most people don't want to swallow toxins, although again, you may be right that it's not harmful provided the HM's and MO's are OK.
Today I swished for about ten min. and then my son wanted to talk to me. I didn't want to spit it out and I did want to talk to him, so I swallowed it, and I'm here to tell the
tale. :-)
Just in case you missed this from the previous discussion here's my post again.
It can be summed up as "Don't Swallow after OP Ever!"
Sorry, it's taken me awhile to get back to CZ. But I'm alarmed that some of you are considering swallowing instead of spitting out after OP!
What remains in the mouth after OP is known to be so toxic that in Ayurvedic medicine (where the protocol comes from) they recommend that you bury the oil in the ground away from your home after you spit it out! Nowadays indoor plumbing is a good alternative - but use the toilet not the sink. And then rinse your mouth thoroughly several times with hot (not scalding) salt water.
I don't know of any research about this other than millions of people doing this for hundreds (maybe thousands) of years. With that kind of field testing I sure wouldn't want to ignore the prevailing wisdom. Especially with no upside and such a big downside.
Intuitively after pulling for a number of years now, I wouldn't dream of swallowing that stuff that's been in my mouth for 20 minutes. It just feels caustic somehow.
Clay, on the other hand, may be ok to swallow because it binds germs, toxins (and just about everything else) to it to be carried through the digestive tract and excreted without getting reabsorbed by the body. That's why it's so great for detox etc.
Even so, clay's cheap so I usually spit out the clay from my mouth and swallow the fresh stuff. But with OP NEVER NEVER SWALLOW!
^This website should tell you about chlorhexidine being comparable to oil pulling.
BLIS K12 probiotics (the kind I use which, is Therabreath) are a swish and rinse product. They provide you with S. Salivarius bacteria which lives in the oral region. They help tremendously with sore throat, fever, plaque causing bacteria, gingivitis and other harmful afflictions. They are meant to be localized in the mouth. It is guesstimated that only 2% of people on the planet have them naturally occurring in their mouth. The rest of us have to use probiotics. I have been considering contacting the company to get their opinion on my oil pulling question. Oil pulling is meant to kill microorganisms. S. Salivarius K12 is a microorganism. However, it is said oil pulling is much more damaging towards Streptococcus mutants then it is towards other bacteria. BLIS K12 bacteria targets Streptococcus mutants and neutralizes it. (In more detail, BLIS activity of S. Salivarius K12 bacteria creates BLIS proteins which are salivaricin A and salivaricin B. These proteins act as Streptococcus pyogene inhibitors.) Oil pulling and S. Salivarius K12 have the potential to work hand in hand, but not if oil pulling just demolishes everything in it's path including S. Salivarius K12. Some BLIS K12 probiotics are sold with chlorhexidine. For all intensive purposes chlorhexidine is faster (more powerful) then oil pulling.I've also read something recently regarding oil pulling that intrigued me. Apparently, someone on this site put a post up stating oil pulling only removes toxins from the bloodstream (another thing that weighs on it's side against S. Salivarius K12 [the bacteria do not purge the blood stream which is relevant as I am trying to decide which is the better choice if oil pulling cancels out oral probiotics]) and does NOT kill bacteria. It is the rinses you do after words with Sea Salt water and a non-fluoride substance like baking soda that actually kill the bacteria. This person cited nothing so I find it hard to believe because as far as I can tell the only scientific study on oil pulling was the study comparing it to chlorhexidine. That information from the website I listed appears other places on the internet. I do not have the actual study to reference but as the information appears other places, it is believable. I am sure you could find it for yourself if you looked. Thanks for your help! Any insight or genuine thoughts are appreciated.
Almost a year since your post, I wonder what you'd come to. I've recently received the news that I have gingivitis. Having just learned about oral probiotics as well as oil pulling, I'll be working out a program to help the good bugs win and the healing begin.
It seems to me that a daily combo of destroying/reducing plaque and repopulating the oral cavity with BLIS should work. I've just done a little research on chlorhexidine and find it's "role in preventing tooth decay (dental caries) is controversial." I would choose oil pulling over chlorhexidine simply because it's natural, even if it would take an extra two weeks to effect the same result.
Oil Pulling is the best treatment for everything. Every day morning take 10ml oil at mouth and do the treatment will clean your mouth so it will restrict the most of the diseases because will start from mouth to inner body.
