I think yeast can cause gluten intolerance or vice versa. All I know is gluten Intolerance is genetic and I have the genes. I also have elevated antibodies towards gluten and I clearly can't tolerate even trace amounts of it. Gluten is known to cause autoimmune disease and I've had Graves Disease since 1999. Long before I'd ever even heard of Candida. I was already sick before I ever saw any sign of candida. On my candida diet I was only eating organic meat, eggs, veggies (not even carrots) and fish. I was still getting symptoms. Some were probably die-off...I think anyone who's sick with intestinal issues or leaky gut probably has overgrowth. Some symptoms were clearly not die-off though...especially when they were still coming long after I stopped all antifungals. Where was the gluten? It was in my supplements, my hair products, my lotion, my lipstick, my wooden spoons, on my hands after feeding my pets. It was literally everywhere. My health improved greatly after changing these products. Gluten was clearly the main issue. Candida was probably a result of a perpetually leaky gut caused by gluten damage and antibiotics taken during this critical time. It does make sense that the fuzzy white tongue and feeling of a yeast infection coming on is actually yeast. The thing that confuses me is that of ALL the things with Sugar
I've eaten in the past month since going off my candida diet I havent experienced any reactions like that. I was eating snicker bars, cocoa pebbles, and all kinds of snacks. Then I eat one brand of gluten free flax bread and all of a sudden yeast is crawling up my throat? Other brands of gluten free bread dont do that to me. This brand had preservatives
and emulsifiers that nothing else I eat have. Could it be that since I'm chemically sensitive and my body is trying to recover from damage that these kind of chemicals are causing a yeast reaction? I would think that yeast would much rather like to eat all of the sugar than some plain old gluten free flax bread.
You say you don't know what to make of all the gluten allergy claims. I guess you can believe it or don't believe it. The fact is that gluten sensitivity can be accurately tested for and Candida overgrowth cannot. Research into human genes reveals that as many as 90 million Americans have genetic immune reactions to gluten. These antibodies are commonly found in people with unexplained illness or autoimmune diseases. With the exception of Diabetes many times autoimmune diseases are halted when gluten is removed from the diet. Gluten protein structure is alarmingly similar to the structure of our own body tissues. This is why it is very hazardous to our health when our immune system creates antibodies against gluten. Our tissues are attacked as well. This causes leaky gut, disease, bacterial overgrowth and even cancer. This is not speculation..we're not talking about some controversial spit test. This is real...its genetic...and its been proven. Celiac Disease is one form of gluten sensitivity but its been discovered that a larger portion of the population have the same antibodies w/out having Celiac Disease. These people are suffering the same consequences but will test negative for Celiac...therefore a huge amount of people are unaware of the cause of their illness. Given all the evidence regarding gluten I'm inclined to believe that candida is the lesser of the two evils....unless of course someday candida overgrowth can be PROVEN to exsist all on its own with no underlying cause. All other food sensitivities are secondary to Gluten Intolerance. These sensitivities are caused by leaky gut and can go away once the gut is healed...gluten intolerance on the other hand is life-long. Candida is not genetic or lifelong (if properly treated). If candida enters the bloodstream a healthy immune system will either neutralize it or destroy it in a short amount of time. It will do this w/out harming its own tissues in the process. Which do you think poses the greater risk? I rarely see anyone on these boards get cured from candida and that used to scare the heck out of me. On the other hand people who discover gluten as the root of their problems ALL seem to recover. Even those who, like me, were once bed-ridden or worse...on deaths doorstep...have fully recovered.
