Hi, Im a single mom with 3 small children and had no family in town and was experiencing extreme pain for the last three months thinking it was a bad case of gas. I finally went to the doctor after the last episode lasted everyday for a whole week. The pain was like someone inserted a blood pressure machine inside me and was squeezing everything.. starting in my chest, up my back up my armpits and lasted for about 40-45 mins.. I couldnt talk, was on the ground in extruciating pain until the episode ended.. on March 11th of this year, I went in for a routine gallbladder removal by laproscopic surgury..In which the dtr explained the procedure and stated that it was routine and I would be back at to work within 5 days. .just feeling fatigue. the surgery lasted about 45 mins and i was sent home that evening after they determined I was fine.. the next morning when I woke up, after having a cup of coffee, I started experiencing severe pain starting at my neck, traveling down to where my gallbladder was, my back and eventually my stomach.. The pain was so bad, not even the pain pills they prescribed for me worked.. I couldnt talk nor cry and my uncle who offered to stay and help with my kids, finally called an ambulance to come and get me.. something was wrong. I was transfered to my local hospital but they wouldnt touch me because I didnt have the surgery there.. I must have sat there from 7am - 8pm until they final transfered me accross town to where the hospital was that preformed the surgery.. Upon arrival, they left me in the holding area of the er until my surgeon arrivedd to give orders what to do.. After receiving serveral bloods tests and having everyone poking me from bloodtest to iv's, inwhich no one could get in because my viens were collapsing.. It was determined that my red blood count dropped from 38-18 within less than 24hours.. They then rushed me to have a catscan and sure enough, my stomach was filled with 16cc's of blood.. I was bleeding internaling from a mistake of the surgeon.. Upon going in with the tools for the surgury, she accidently cut a probe, which is the muscle in front of my liver and it bled into my stomach. I was finally rushed into emergency surgery at 10:30pm where they pumped the blood out and transfused me and stiched the error. Here I was thinking I was going for routine surgery and 24 hours later, I almost died. It is now April 1st. and my blood count is still low, im still experiencing sever pain in my muscles, spazzing of leg arms back and side where surgery was and still can not eat normally.. Cant keep anything in me.
I have contacted some lawyers, however they are all saying to, me that at least I didnt die! or lose a leg! so whats the point. Hello, my kids would have been motherless, im now financially strapped due to being out of work for a month not 5 days and I have more medical bills than you can imagine. Any suggestions, would be great. please feel free to email me. tdefran037@adelphia.net
I had my gall bladder removed in Jan of 08 and have had problems ever since.. I go for a endoscopy next week. I have bloating, gas, hearburn, and diarhrea. I know what is causing it. It is the extra bile in my stomach which is causing me to have gastritis. I wish I would have done something diffirent before I had the surgery. No one told me about all the problems after gall bladder removal...Let me know about your symptoms.....Bev
Lori,
I had my gallbladder removed Aug. 2001. Since then I have had chronic diarrhea, spasms, pain in the upper right side (where the gallbladder used to live), horrible acid reflux, horrible food reflux, fatigue, depression and to top it all off gained 60 lbs with my stomach looking like I'm about 6 months pregnant. My first visit to the surgeon after the surgery, I informed him of the horrible pain after eating a normal dinner (salad, steak and a baked potato) and "dumping/spasms". He said I just "over ate". He referred me to the Gastro Dr. I was scheduled to have a scope of my small intenstines 6 months after the surgery, but became very ill the night before with 103 fever (tonsillitis). Long story short, I didn't go in for the scope since a few months later my company closed and I had no insurance. I have a new job now and have seen a regular MD that ran all the tests she could think of before she referred me to a Gastro Dr. By chance did they do this "scope" on you? I'm wondering if I have a "little" leak that is causing all of this pain and aggravation. I can't determine what brings on the diarrhea, since there is no regularity to what/when I eat. Any advise would help. I just do not want to go through another "out-patient" procedure that is going to end up giving me NO answers.
Hi, I just read your posting and my daughter is going through the same thing. Except her gall bladder was removed and she had no symptoms of gall bladder disesae. Anyhow we have found out she has gastroparesis. Did they check you for this? I am wondering how many others develope this after surgery. They try to tell us she had it before the surgery, and then we tell them she was asytmoptomatic, then they have no respone, funny huh.
After my surgery I was having severe heart burn so I went to the Drs and they said I had gastroparesis as well. I am on 2 different meds that I take daily. It really stinks..
Let me guess.... do you maybe have Gallstones in the liver where they start to form anyway? Or is there sludge somewhere causing you the pain? Could it be the clamp they put in you is causing some of the pain? I would get another opinion and look on the internet again. In the meantime I would stay on a LOW FAT diet. I have heard of this. My sister and I talked to my surgeon about a 15 year old girl who had her gallbladder out and she is still experiencing pain in the region. He said that that was not normal and that she should be reevaluated.I totally agree. For her mother has been saying that it is Phamtom pain. I believe that if it occurs with severity and frequently that something is going on there.Listen to your body and do the proper research and don't forget Prayer.
I'm new to this and I'm trying to find some information.
Is it that you've had your gallbladder out and are still in constant pain? Almost ten years ago I had my gallbladder out. The pain was still there. As a matter of fact it's still there! Worse then ever.Have had every test known.
The doctor(s) ran out of tests. Wanted to send me to a shrink. Great. I am a ver active 52 year old male who runs ultra marathons, boxes and martial arts. All my physicals
check out great. Then why do I have this rotten pain under the rib cage where the gallbladder was? Not the liver. It's been checked. Adhesions? The only answer left for they can not be picked up on any test. Does your pain come in waves?
I can be pain free for months at a time then it comes on for no apparent reason however bowel movements seem to bring them on or aggrivate them. Sometimes the pain last for hours, days or weeks. Sometimes it is mild or really horrendous. Sound familiar? Just curious. I have learned to live with it for after all of these years it doesn't seem to be killing me but at times....
Hi I had my gallbladder removed over 5 years and I am still having problems. I am still having attacks till this day. I went to the Dr. who discovered I had gallstones. I told he all of my problems and he then tell me I have IBS.
He tells me this without doing any futher tests. When I guess it is my fault for suffering for this long. I should have gotten a second opinion along time ago. I just changed to a different Dr. he ran blood tests when I wasn't hurting and just the other day when I was hurting. the test showed my Liver enzymes were high. So now I have to have surgery again. My new Dr. says it is either one of two things. 1.)My muscles by the liver is having spasms. or 2.) When they removed my gallbladder they left a stone in my bile duct. And this is what the Dr. thinks is my problem. I have a MRI Mon. morning 2/9/04.
I hope this might help someone else.
I had my gallbaldder removed a couple yrs ago.. well just recently I started having the same pains as I had before my surgery. Could this be stones or something else?
T>k
I know this was a long time ago but did you indeed have your surgery or did you do the Liver Flush and how is it going now because I'm going to the doctor myself next week because I have pain on the right side of my chest and in my shoulder area.
Denise
I was just wondering why you think aciphex is a bad med to try. I took it before my GB surgery and it had helped me get through a horrible time before my surgery took place. Also I am going to ask my doctor to put me on it again. Why? Because I have had the worst acid problems since my GB was removed. I thought it was the flu until i barfed. And when I did barf i had never felt something that burned my throat and stomach so much. I am guessing that the acid problem is caused from not having a GB anymore, and that the bile now flows freely. I am not sure. Can you shed some light on my scenario. Thank You.
I've suffered for almost 3 years with chronic diarrhoea, occurring only after galbladder removal. I'm so happy to know I'm not alone and not crazy. Any person who hasn't experienced this has no idea how painful, frustrating, and completly embarassing these side effects can be. It's something you have be conscious of every time you eat. Why are doctors not more aware of this side effect of galbladder removal? I resently went on "The Atkins Diet", Dr. Robert C. Atkins low carbohydrate lifestyle approach to weight loss and good health. I've found within 2 days of limiting my carbohydrate intake to below 50 grams per day that I stoped having diarrhoea and abdominal cramps altogether. I'm not trying to promote the diet as a weight loss solution (draw your own conclusions), but I will stand by the fact that I have the same digestive problems of galbladder removal and have experienced great relief from this diet. I hope this helps someone. Please respond if it does help.
I have found a great little pill to help with the suffering of Bile Salt diarrhea after having gall bladder surgery.
Let me tell you, no Drs were able to help me. I got the finger up the ..., took stool samples to be tested, nothing.
And I had to take this condition in to consideration with everything I did. I did the research and found the Questran, which worked fine but wasnt convienent. Recently I did another search and found COLESTID. It is a once or twice a day, depending on your body pill, that is half the price of Questran and works like a charm. It is great to eat like normal people now and not have to worry about it. Please, take my advise and try it.
I had my Gall Bladder emoved 12 years ago. Since that time I cannot tolerate meat, fats, or things I used to enjoy..like ice-cream, butter, even frozen yogurt. These seem to have something besides the fat context which causes me diahhria very quickly..I would say within a 1/2 hour. Right now I am in the middle of a juice/fast and enema trial. They told me this would clear up the bowel and liver problem so I am ging it a shot. So far,day 3, and you know what? I never felt so good. I have to go off it tomorrow but Iwill resume it immediately after and try for 5 days this time and then longer if the results continue to be as good. I don't even have the terrible heart-burn that I was having.
This is what has helped me for more than 5 years with almost daily attacks of urgent diarrhea after having my Gall Bladder removed. Calcium is known to be constipating so if you are that IBS type do not take it. All calcium is not the same. Here is the what and how to take the calcium information if you suffer from diarrhea.
Calcium is an OTC supplement we all do not usually get enough of. No Rx is needed to purchase this.
When you take calcium about 40% of the dose gets to the bones the rest is eliminated in our waste. The calcium goes to the intestines and soaks up excess fluids and binds them together and they are gotten rid of in our waste.
This is a process that can be continued by taking the calcium carbonate on a daily basis thus giving a more formed BM.
There is calcium carbonate which helps us with diarrhea and there is calcium citrate which is more easily absorbed by the body and gets to the bones but is not as helpful in controlling diarrhea.
A lot of the calcium supplements contain a 2 to 1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. Magnesium is not helpful for us with diarrhea only causing more in most cases. So, do not purchase this combination. It will only make things worse. Also if you are taking a multi vitamin with magnesium this may be a source of some of the problem if you are having diarrhea. Also for me vitamin C and E seemed to cause me stomach upset.
The dose to take is different for everyone. I must take 3 a day one at each meal and it does not make a difference if I take it before during or after just take it regularly. Taking them at least 4 or 5 hours apart is also necessary so the calcium has time to go through the system and soak up excess bile and water. Sometimes, because of the long number of hours between dinner and breakfast it may be necessary to adjust your timing to taking one at bedtime with a small snack to get better results if you are a person who usually suffers from diarrhea in the mornings.
The most success has come from using any formula of calcium supplement that is like Caltrate 600 Plus with Vitamin D and Minerals in the purple and white box. This information is from the many users that have sent me emails and of the posters on the web site. I hope this will help anyone wishing to try it and I am always here to answer any questions for you. I have a lot of feed back form many users.
You must also have some testing done to be sure you are not dealing with anything more serious. This is most important.
There are other things to consider. If you take any other meds check the side effects and also check with the Doctor or Pharmacist to see if taking calcium will interfere with your other medications and how you might take them. I know if you take thyroid meds it is important not to take the calcium at the same time but maybe 4 hours apart. The calcium will soak up the thyroid medication and you will not be getting the benefit from it. You should also look at the side effects of any other meds you may be on this can contribute to the success or failure of using calcium to help to control your diarrhea. You may also consider if you are constipated and taking calcium this may be the reason for your constipation. You can most likely switch to another form of calcium to relieve this also.
The only side effect is at the beginning of taking the calcium, you may have some gas or indigestion but this usually goes away soon after taking a regular dose for a few days as your body adjusts to the added calcium.
Starting with 1/2 tablet doses with each meal will lessen this problem and it may be enough to control the diarrhea attacks without making you constipated.
Constipation can be a problem so be careful not to take too much. It is safe for most of us to take 1800 mg a day as long as your body processes calcium correctly and you do not have some underlying problem. Check with your Doctor.
I had my gall bladder removed in 1976 and from that time on I had suffered urgent attacks of diarrhea. Went through a lot of test but nothing else could be found. I took many of the meds for bowel spasms and cramps over the years but nothing ever seemed to help. I started to take a calcium supplement to help prevent bone loss in later years and from the first day I felt relief. I was pretty much a prisoner to the bathroom or had to go without eating to be able to leave the house.
I must take 1 tablet with each meal and the diarrhea does not come back if I miss taking it I get diarrhea. It is a trial and error situation to find the right amount that may help you.
The way it works is the calcium carbonate it a binder and when you take it only about 40% of the calcium gets to the bones and the rest is gotten rid of in our waste. During that process it gets to the intestines and soaks up excess bile and water and helps give a more solid BM. Now that you have no gall bladder the bile fluid goes directly into the intestines and causes irritation and diarrhea. The calcium carbonate soaks this up and no more diarrhea. It works great for a lot of us and you just have to take the calcium regularly and do not miss.
I started with Caltrate 600 Plus with vitamin D and minerals and it does seem to make a difference in the ingredients of calcium... This one seems to do the best job for most. You can buy other store brands of calcium with the same ingredients that work just as well but they need to have the same ingredients. I get Member's Mark Brand from Sam's Club you get 300 tablets for 8.99. Let me know if you need more help. You won't be sorry if you try it.
I suggest starting with 1/2 tablet with each meal at first this may be enough to control the diarrhea if not in a few days up the dose to 1 tablet with each meal or any combination there of. The side effect is constipation so if you feel it coming on just cut the dose. It is important to use a calcium that is as much alike as the Caltrate brand from the feedback I have gotten.
Let me list the ingredients:
Vitamin D 200 IU (The sunshine vitamin needed to help the body absorb calcium)
Calcium 500 or 600 MG (This should be calcium carbonate form) (Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body. It is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Calcium is vital to muscle and nerve function, blood clotting and metabolism.)
Magnesium 40 MG (No more than this amount because magnesium will cause you to have diarrhea but because calcium is constipating the magnesium helps to counter act that effect) (Magnesium is essential to build bones and is needed for muscle function, energy metabolism, trans-mission of nerve impulses and to make genetic material and protein.)
Zinc 7.5 MG (Zinc is necessary for some metabolic processes, normal growth and sexual development, and proper immune system functions.)
Copper 1 MG (Copper promotes iron absorption and is essential to red blood cells, connective tissue, fibers and skin pigmentation.)
Manganese 1.8 MG (Maganese plays an important role in metabolism and is also needed to build bones and tendons.)
Boron 250 MCG. (Improves calcium and magnesium retention. Similar improvements can also be seen in Vitamin D deficient post-menopausal females.)
There are other brands with the same ingredients so get something as close as you can. Then start with 1/2 tablet with each meal and in a few days if this is not enough to control your diarrhea then up the dose to 1 tablet with each meal. If you feel you are becoming constipated then cut back on the dose. You may have to stop the calcium completely then start back after you have a BM at a lower dose.
It has been working since the first day I started taking it July 1998 and as long as I take 3 a day (this is the amount I must take it may be different for you) I remain diarrhea free. No cramps, bloating or diarrhea.
The dose you take with each meal is not the dose that is helping you at that meal it is the prior ones that have time to works their way through you system to soak up excess bile and water in the intestines.
It also works for those of you who still have the gall bladder.
Could you tell me the name of your doctor or treatment center. The gastroenterologists (UC San Franisco) that I am being treated by are ignorant on these two drugs you mentioned.
i had my gallbladder removed about 1 1/2 years ago. no gallstones, but was not empting right. since then i have had severe pain in my lower right, severe diarrhoea, and chronic fatigue. i have been checked for everything under the sun including chrones. the only thing found that gave me an answer to the fatigue was i tested poss. for h pylori. took the antibiotics and still have it. they have put me on the colestid for the diarrhoea, and i hate it. i stop taking it everytime they put me on it. it throws me from one extrem to the next. i go from running to the bathroom to not being able to go. i have tried all doses, nothing changes, still constipates me. i have lost 25 pounds in about a 3 week period from the diarrhoea. i dont know what to do, i guess there is nothing i can do. it is so depressing. i have gotten to the point that every test they run i pray something shows, at least then i would have an answer. everytime it always come back normal. how can it be normal. the small bowel x ray i had to drink a lot of barium, i kept it in for about 20 min. ran to the bathroom and it was coming right out just as white as it went in. i dont vomit, only diarrhoea. i cant eat anything, does not matter what, dairy, fatty, spicey, anything, nothing stays in. the weight loss has slowed, but no matter what i eat i loose weight. i have lost a total of 35 pounds now. desperate and depressed!
