My son had some red in his stool this morning and I'm wondering if it could be blood. He is not eating solids regularly and all he had yesterday was a couple tiny bites of oatmeal and mashed banana so it can't be what he ate. I did notice his intestines were rumbling a lot the last 2 days or so and my stomach hurt a bit too so maybe something I ate that got passed through the breastmilk. Now, since I read that E.coli report about bagged salad (which I eat everyday) being contaminated with it I wonder if that could be a possibility. The salad I had the other day wasn't the freshest and I threw the rest out. I also am wondering if the homeopathic cream, Florasone, could have anything to do with too since I just started using it on my son's dry patches which I'm not sure if it's eczema or not. My husband accidently put this cream on his bottom thinking it was the other cream we use. We wiped it off but now I wonder if that could cause problems. I have to look up the symptoms of E.coli poisoning and see what it says. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm going to keep an eye on his diaper and see if there's anymore.

My son is a little over 8 months for those who don't know.
Hi Nicole,
In leiu of my last message in response to your feeding issues, I think that this is probably an allergy. Are you sure the oatmeal is ok with him?
So far he has not had any more red in his diaper thankfully and he's had a lot of poops since then. His tummy's still been rumbling though but not as much I don't think. His poops are very loud, gassy and diarrhea sounding. They're always watery. He seems to be his normal self, although since I am giving him tylenol or motrin for his teething I wouldn't know if he had a fever or not. Unfortunately I've had to give it to him on a regular basis because it helps him sleep. I don't do every 4 hours on the nose though. I go by how he's acting.
Unfortunately tylenol and motrin can be hard on the stomach as well. I wonder what would happen if you gave him a break from it?
It could be some kind of virus he picked up - babies are famous for having upset tummies simply because of the hands touching everything and putting everything in their mouths.
Yeah, I do try and give him a break from it because I don't like him being on it in the first place. It's just he's teething fast and hard. He's getting 3 teeth simultaneously as we speak.
He may have picked something up. You just reminded me of what I was thinking about in bed last night. My in-laws were here and my son was chewing on their Cell Phone which I didn't find out until after the fact that it took a swim in a truck stop public restroom TOILET!!! I was mortified. That was all last week that they were here and we went out to eat a lot too so whatever he touched in restaurants as well, even though I wipe the table and highchair down. His tummy IS still rumbling today.
Hey Sherri! Thanks for your other post I have to read it over again and will respond soon. No, I'm not sure oatmeal is ok. In fact, that was the very first time I gave it to him. He doesn't seem to like any food really. He's curious but ends up gagging. He did really good on fresh apple a couple times but today it made him gag so I don't know. He seems to always have some type of red bumps or rash and he still has really dry patches on his arms and legs. I still don't know if it's eczema or not. If it's eczema, isn't that immune related? And if it is, I think our immune system is something like 70% in the gut so I'm not sure what to do. I'm sure glad I haven't gotten him vaccinated since that messes up babies guts badly.
Hi Nicole,
It all seems to add up to an allergy. Oatmeal does have gluten which is one of the big issues with grains like wheat in terms of allergies...so Maybe you have to start eliminating foods, or eliminate everything for a few days and start from scratch again introducing one food at a time for 4-5 days to make sure there are no allergies.
A note...I bought Aveno Baby moisterizer, the one with the oatmeal, and used it once on our baby, and he got a really bumpy rash from head to toe. Assuming it's the oatmeal, that would be your rash. But he's always had dry patches here and there, so I know he's sensitive, but it's not eczema because if I moisturize him twice a day for a week it usually clears up.
I think I'm going to have to start over and really pay attention. I'm giving him a rest right now because he just does not want it so I'm assuming he knows best. He did have a few tiny specks of red in his diaper again this morning but I haven't been giving him any food. I did give him a dose of tylenol before bed last night so I don't know if it's that. I layed off of the tylenol, motrin, teething tabs and tummy soother. I feel like I was giving him too many things for too long of a time. I just bought some chamomile pellets instead. He seems to be doing fine. I did buy some unscented lotion to use on his dry spots and it has helped a lot so maybe it isn't eczema like you said. When you wrote that it was such a relief because I was upset that he could have it since I'm trying to do everything natural. I do think he's sensitive though and don't know why that would be.
Hey Sherri! Well darn it, I think my son might have eczema after all because it has gotten worse the last couple days being out in the sun and swimming in his little pool. The lotion was working great until we started being in the water a lot. What do you think? I have an appointment on Monday with the peditrician regarding the red in his diaper since it's happened 3 times now and this has been going on for 3 weeks.
Hi Nicole,
Just read your last 2 messages. Tylenol is really hard on the tummy, I've only given it to our little guy maybe 5 times. I try to offer a frozen cloth for teething, and teething drops which are pretty benign, but the tylenol is the very last thing that I give him and he has to be pretty bad before I will do that. It could be the reason for the red stool. You should start monitoring what he eats and what you give him daily to see if you can find a pattern so you can figure out the source, but it still sounds like an allergy to me.
A pediatrician is probably just going to give you a cortizone cream for his rash which I wouldn't diagnose as eczema yet. Babies skin is more sensitive than adults, and some babies just have rashes for the first year or so while they get used to the new environment. My brother always had rashes all over his face and diaper area throughout his first year. He looked horrible, but it just went away.
If you were out in the sun did you use a sunscreen on him? the rash getting worse could be a reaction to that. or if you filled the pool from a garden hose, they usually release different chemicals if they've been sitting in the sun. I wouldn't get too worried. Would try to find a Glaxal Base cream to use on him, and moisturize daily.
I think you're right about it being an allergy and I'm starting to think gluten intolerance. I was worried a bit about E.coli but he would have been really bad within a couple days if it was that. The doctor is doing a stool test for parasites and other pathogens. I should have those results next week. I took him off of EVERYTHING, solid foods, pain relievers and homeopathics. Yestersday was the first day I gave him a couple chamomile pellets since his teething has seemed to pick up again. He has 8 teeth now and I'm pretty sure he's working on his first molar already. Today I started him on some organic applesauce and let him do it mostly himself. Like your son I think mine enjoyed being able to control the situation himself. We'll try that from now on.
The rash is gone now....go figure. Those couple days in the pool made it worse but then we didn't go swimming for a few days and it's practically gone. No, I didn't use any sunscreen on him since I keep half of the pool in the shade, but I did fill the pool with the hose and some hot water from the house faucet. I have been using the lotion on him almost everyday and we just started a new bottle of bath soap that I think is very soothing and nourshing to the skin. What is Glaxal? I would never use a cortisone cream on him. It just sends the rash somewhere deep in the body but doesn't really get rid of it. I know this from experience since I did my first Liver Flush a couple years ago!

glad to hear your son is doing ok, I got scared with that E.coli thing.
I wanted to tell you that my son too has had some rashes coming and going, the doctor told me it was just sensitive skin, but later on I found out he was allergic to the ecological diapers. Now in the summer I just keep him the most possible without anything.
About the sun, don't be afraid. My son is 22 months, but he stays every day under the sun at noon without sunblock and never gets even red, he's very white sensitive skinned but the sun doesn't do any harm to children really, on the contrary. You can just wet his hair every now and then, and that's enough. He needs a lot of sun.
Another thing, don't use any commercial products for the skin of your baby, if you look at the list of ingredients it is a no no for sure. Just go with plain good oil, and only if very necessary. It is better to let the skin find its balance by itself. Keep him naked in water and sun and that's all he needs. Many times the skin just needs to be hydrated more than nourished. The vit.D produced by sun-exposure is the best protection for the skin.
About oatmeal, maybe your son is not really allergic, maybe he's just not ready. Have you tried rice-flakes? you can also consider keeping him on fruits and vegetables only, for now or forever. Try carrots and apricots, which would be good also for the skin. You can also boil some fruit in water, eat the fruit and give him the water. He could like to have some minerals replenished if his poopoo is on the wet side. Best of all, go ahead with your milk, he's a lucky boy to be still nursed by you!
Thank you! I do let me son get some sun on his skin but I'm still afraid of him burning. He is light skinned also with blue eyes. So far he's done ok with the amount we are out there. His pool blew away in a storm we had on Monday so I have to get him a new one! The sunscreen I did buy for him is natural and made by Aubrey Organics which I'll only use if we'll be in the sun a lot. Do you think some young children don't get burned because they are eating nutritiously? I think I remember reading about that somewhere, Mercola perhaps.
I hope my son isn't allergic or gluten intolerant. His stool culture came back normal for parasites and pathogens. I'm starting him off slowly on foods again. I'm not going to give him any grains just veggies and fruit. We did try rice cereal initially but he never liked it. I tried the oatmeal because I thought maybe it was the taste. Carrots and apricots sounds yummy! And I was thinking that maybe giving him some homemade veggie broth would do him good. I'm glad to still be nursing; at least I know he's getting good nutrition that way.
