The strangest thing happened to me last night. I bought a whole pineapple 4 days ago. Yesterday morning i juiced half of it, and put the other half in the fridge, so i can eat it in the evening. The juice didn't give me any problems. Then i ate the other half in the evening. When i finished eating it all, i could feel a little tingling on the right side of my tongue (i did most of the chewing on the right side). I went to check in the mirror, and there was a huge hole in my tongue, lol. I'm serious! It looked just like someone burned a hole in my tongue with a cigarette. And i do mean hole, it was pretty deep. This happened yesterday, and i can still see it right now (but the pain is gone). i heard acidic fruits are bad for tooth enamel, and i always rinse my mouth with water after eating them. But i never thought this would happen. It was pretty ripe when i ate it, because i bought it 4 days ago. Maybe the longer you keep it, the acid content increases. I'll just juice them from now on, no more eating. Does anyone know what caused this?
Mark007, Yes it was from the acid in the pineapple.
I have had pineapple burn the corners of my mouth....never my tongue.....(yet) When we get one I eat most of it ....at one time ! More worse, once I took a tour of the Dole Pineapple factory and at the end they turned us loose to eat as much as we wanted........every laughed at me. I ate and ate and ate and would have continued to eat but the tour bus would have left me there. My mouth was very sore after wards. I love pineapple. I will probably some day have a hole in my tongue just like you. I hope that your tongue heals fast so you can eat some more! *S*
Take care and dont get salt in the hole in your tongue.
Sorry for the humor, I know it is no fun to have the "pineapple burn".
Blueduck
Dirk and Sandy speak of the enzymes in Pineapple having the ability to burn lips! That's why they can work to help you digest - strong stuff this nature huh?!
If I tell you that I put the pineapple pulp on my face as a natural mask... I've read that it's great to remove the dead surface cells and renew the skin - leave it on for 10 minutes and it does wonders. Well, after 5 minutes it started to burn, I had to wash it off - got rid of the dead cells for sure... :)
I usually get this burning feeling when I eat kiwi - probably it contains strong enzymes too...
I hope you feel better now!!!
