Anyone know anything about this? I had an Md (who is also an ND) use it on me, and I am trying to figure out if it is b.s. or not. The first run, with my feet in the bath, yielded tons of nasty looking stuff that I thought were toxins from my body. Then, he ran the machine in the water without my feet, and the water looked almost the same to me, but he claimed it was different with my feet. It could have been, but I got very skeptical when I saw that the color change and debris were there without my feet in the water. If he was trying to con me, I cant imagine why he would show it to me without my feet in the water, I was so amazed up until that point!

    Thanks for the input

I don't know about this particular treatment, but I know there are some excellent clays out there that do the job for a fraction of what this system costs. Definitely foot baths with clays and foot pads are a genuine means of detoxing, but not exclusive. Without knowing anything about this product in particular, my greatest objection is the price tab.

No. They're just trying to scam you - there are no "toxins" in your body and none need to be "removed" from your body. Besides - how would toxins, normally stored in your liver, come out through your feet of all things? If the toxins were in the bloodstream, you would also be bleeding all over the floor if this "machine" said it would do what it said it would..

        >- there are no "toxins" in your body and none need to be "removed" from your body.

While I do not know about this machine, you are scamming as much as anyone else by saying that they do not have Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, etc in their bodies that need removing. How the heck do you know?

I do know that some detox methods do work, some better than others.

        >- how would toxins, normally stored in your liver,

Not all toxins are stored in the liver, some are stored in fatty tissues, some concentrate in the brain, and some go to the kidneys.

        >- If the toxins were in the bloodstream, you would also be bleeding all over the floor

Do not be rediculous. Various toxins can be extracted through the feet and other areas of skin by various methods without significant harm. Haven't you ever use a poultice?

It's been a long time since you posted this, but one of my neighbors who cannot afford it, just ordered a $2000 foot bath.

I took chemistry in high school and college and it did not add up so I did a quick Google and found this:

      http://www.chem1.com/CQ/ionbunk.html#FBF (bottom of the page)

      More electrolytic pseudoscience: "Detoxifying" foot-baths
Have you ever heard of those foot-baths through which an electric current is passed in order to draw out the "toxins" from your body? To someone who knows no chemistry, it can be quite impressive to see all these evil substances color the water various shades of brown, green, and blue as the current works its magic. Sometimes you see flecks of solids and bubbles of gas appear as your body is "cleansed". Well, this is an old parlor trick, a nice chemistry-classroom demonstration, and, of course, a highly profitable scam. It is offered by ayurvedic healers and other quackery practioners, including some naturopathic and chiropractic physicians, and can go by such names as Ionic Detoxification, Aqua Chi, Bionic Hydrotherapy®, etc. See here for a typical promotion.

How does it work? You place your feet in a bowl of water to which a bit of salt has been added. A small electric current is passed between two electrodes immersed in the water, which soon becomes quite discolored. The color, of course, comes from electrolytic corrosion of the metal electrodes. These are usually made of iron, nickel, and copper, all of which decompose into highly-colored ions; these colors will vary with the amount of salt present and the pH of the solution. By-products of the electrolysis process are bubbles of hydrogen and chlorine gases (both of which are dangerous in confined spaces) and sodium hydroxide, commonly known as "lye". The latter tends to soften skin, allowing it to flake off, pick up various colors on reacting with the metal ions, and complete the illusion that one usually pays dearly for: individual treatments can be from $50 up, and the grossly overpriced power supply "machines" sold for home use can go for as much as $1000. And of course, all that really gets cleaned out is your wallet!

This makes perfect sense and this is a total RIPOFF. Any MD who would use this in his practice should lose his license. You were right to question it.

Not so ! I know for a fact they work they are called ionic foot baths! In fact in New York city plumbing companies send thier employees who receive large amounts of toxins in thier work environment to these clinics that offer this service to prevent them from becoming ill, as many of thier co worker in the past have!
A color chart can even tell you what type of toxins you are releasing and these colors coincide with the toxins they have been exposed to! Your chemistry education may be little more then establishment propaganda!

        >- chemistry in high school and college

My minor in chemistry disagrees with a lot of what you say.

Some of your claims can be true however.

        >- The color, of course, comes from electrolytic corrosion of the metal electrodes.

In some cases, this may be true but not in all cases. I have used pure copper electrodes which will impart a slight green tint to the water after a long period of time without having the feet in the bath.

However, placing the feet into the bath, the water can take on other colors that can not come from the electrodes.

Also, you may not be aware, but not all detox foot baths use a current. Many of the newer ones use vibrational energy and reactive clays such as Bentonite and zeolite.

You can even run an AA spectrograph on the material before and after to quantify the mercury, arsenic, lead, aluminum, etc that has been absorbed.

        >- By-products of the electrolysis process are bubbles of hydrogen and chlorine gases (both of which are dangerous in confined spaces) and sodium hydroxide, commonly known as "lye"

You would not produce enough to be noticible in several hours at these low currents.

        >- soften skin, allowing it to flake off, pick up

Yes, this does happen some but what you fail to realize is that the body naturally tries to eliminate metals through the pores in the soft skin of the feet and even just an Epsom Salt bath helps carry this away but the clays work even better. The softer the skin the better the results.

        Try this your self....

Wash and scrub your feet several times, rinse several times more, then put them into a tub of very warm epsom salt water (2 tablespoons in a gallon of water) and see what you get in 15-20 minutes.

Humans used to do this naturally by walking barefoot through the mud.

Do the same experiment and add some hydrogen peroxide.

The free oxygen ions from either will help pull additional heavy metals from the pores of the feet.

Third, use a zapper with the positive electrode on the hands (wrap the electrod with a paper towel wet with salt water to keep the coppper off of your skin) and the negative in the foot bath. This will not color the water green with copper but you can definitely see other stuff after a while.

Here's another link which follows the "ionic detox" claims: http://www.raygirvan.co.uk/apoth/2004_09_01_arc.html#109408508192743628

Some of the manufacturers are apparently not claiming that the baths are as good as pixie dust for curing everything, and are even saying that the water color doesn't mean anything.

Ananlysis of the water indicated that a high concentration of iron was observed, consistent with the use of ferrous electrodes, but no organic molecules which, if present, would have indicated that the device actually worked. In a nutshell they are electrolysis units, capable of turning water into nasty looking dark brown water.

So why pay for sticking your feet in rusty water? If you do get suckered into paying for a session, make sure that you wash your feet off afterwards, my wife got headaches after a session given by her chiropractor.

I have a hard time believing that placing a foot in a water bath or clay bath would not leave any organic molecules behind. If nothing else, it would at least leave some skin cells and keratin behind which id definately organic.

Perhaps their test was so crude as to not be able to detect the organic molecules.

Too funny, are you saying they should have looked for skin instead of internal body fluids? That would imply that you think that the foot bath would be removing the skin somehow? Of course not, they tested for internal substances normally removed from the liver and kidneys, but found none.

I don't mind that well meaning people are buying them if they understand that it is a placebo, but no one should be paying for sessions in an electrolysis unit. If you have access to one, try setting it up with all the salts etc but minus any human contact, ie, no feet etc, turn it on, and watch the water turn brown. Gee, maybe its leftover toxins from the previous user? No, its iron corroded from an electrode. Now try to figure out what the "filter" does and why it shows corrosion on the electrodes inside it. How is that a "filter", what is it "filtering out" that leaves the water brown? Oh maybe its putting something into the water? Now you're on the right track!

                >- they should have looked for skin instead of internal body fluids

No, but skin is made of organic compounds so they would be present.

You previously said "but no organic molecules"

You did not mention any specific compounds.

I am saying that if you do a foot bath detox, there will be organic molecules. If they are not finding them, their testing is flawed.

You will get organic molecules in the water just by placing your foot in it with or without the clay, iron, etc.

Granted, Iron electrodes will rust and turn brown but not all foot detox baths use iron electrodes. Most of the ones that I have seen use stainless steel which does not rust and does not color the water.

Perhaps you should have stated "the did not find any of the expected organic compounds that they were looking for" if this is correct as it would have provided greater clarity.

IMHO any organic compounds that may have been extracted would have either bound to the clay or would have been masked by it as the amount of material extracted would have been miniscule indeed.

I said that no organic materials which would indicate that the device worked were found; clearly finding skin samples alone would not be proof that the device worked so they would not bother to test for that.

They found nothing in the water which could not be explained by electrolysis, is that unambiguous enough?

Let me know how your test turns out, the one that you ignored in my previous post, the one similar to the post that started this thread! You know, the test where you add the salts for conductivity, turn on the foot bath with no one in it, and see what happens. Please post your results here, as truthfully as you can.

Well after reading all the nonsense about Ionic foot baths I actually puchased one to find out for myself.

        These are the facts;

A very close female friend of mine has crystaline deposits in her joints. They are from the kidney stones which have been confirmed by doctors. She had all sorts of aches and pains in her joints and really struggled. Well after using the Ionic foot bath everything changed. The water was like mud after an hour on the highest level but the most incredible thing happened. NO MORE JOINT PAIN! She was able to curl her fingers and toes and the pain from her hips dissapeared. It's been a week now since she used the foot bath and the pain which she had for 2 months has not resurfaced. I'm convinced without doubt that this unit works. I don't care what disinformation the establishment feeds people but unless you try it for yourself to treat a legitimate problem I can be confident in saying that a result will be achieved. In addition I have been using the unit myself along with my girlfriend and our skin is looking much healthier along with regular bowl movement. It cost me $500 and I'm sure my friends doctors visits along with prescription drugs cost 10x more. I can see why the disinformers (ie people paid by the Big Pharmas to subscribe to this forum) would be keen to stop people from alternative therapy.

Last week my husband and I did our first ionic foot bath. The look and the smell of the water were very different. When we got home, our neighbor was outside and had no idea we had done anything said, "Wow, your eyes are a lot whiter. What did you do?" Of course, we told him we had just finished an ionic foot bath, and then we went inside to look in the mirror. Sure enough they were much whiter.

Where did you buy your unit for $500?

Does anyone have any information about how to make one?

Yes they are electrolysis units, that's why the water turns brown. Keep your money and go barefoot in a junkyard, just kidding, don't try that at home!

Did you get headaches after the session? Some do, I would wash that nasty rusty water off if I got one of the sessions.

Rhetoric without experience = ignorance! Sorry you two, college chemistry throws you both for a foolish looking loop!
Did anyone ever think that a headache is a sign of detoxification! I know too many people having great results from the ionic foot baths ,people who understand their types of toxins and the corresponding colors the foot bath expresses!
Refreshing revitalizing are the words they use !
Plumbers in the feild who use the ionic foot bath have a much better attendence and are sick much less then the average non user!
You two can critisize in ignorance all you like it doesnt prove anything!
        Experience trumps babble everytime!

Yes, it is often reported after detox.

Where did you get this information? I would like to see the study.

I am not sure who you are referring to in your post, but I strongly support detox foot baths.

Here is a respected spa owners experience with one:

            http://www.medspapress.com/articles/155/1/Caveat-Emptor%3A-Detoxifying-Foot-Baths

I don't sell them and wouldn't advise anyone to either buy them or pay for sesions in them. You can get the same effect by collecting rain water from rusty auto parts in a junkyard and soaking your feet in it (but thats not saying that you should do that either!).

I have never seen anyone claim that soaking your feet in rusty water has any health benefits. No one should take anecdotal evidence by those who are selling them or selling sessions with them as convincing evidence either. No one knows the effect that soaking your feet in rusty water has but it apparently gives some people headaches.

As for any supposed toxins that are present in the water, ie, magically removed from the body through the feet(!), studies show they are not toxins but ferrous material corroded from an electrode.

Don't believe it? Take this test: set up the foot bath unit just as if someone were going to use it, then run it for the recommended time with no one in it. Voila! Magical toxins appeared in the water!? Where could they have come from!? Where else but from the machine?

Please write back again once you've completed that test. Or see the beginning of this thread for a decription of what happened when the guys' doctor did that.

              >- soaking your feet in rusty water

Once again, you are stuck in a continuous hopeless loop. You are referring to only a footbath that uses an iron electrode. I have never seen one of these. The ones than I have seen use stainless, copper, brass, or titanium. The copper can impart a slight green or blue tint but it is rarely visible.

              >- studies show they are not toxins but ferrous material corroded from an electrode.

Once again, you are referring to the use of iron electrodes.

Again you are basing all of your information on one particular model which I have not seen. Do not be so narrow minded and look past the end of your nose.

You do not even need to use electricity or electrodes in some detox foot baths. Even using Epsom Salts in a hot water foot bath can help pull some metals from the body.

Since this thread is about ionic detoxification units, lets keep our focus on those. They are all electrolysis units and will have various colors of supposed "toxins" depending upon the composition of the electrodes. Other magical devices could be addressed in a different thread.

However, why not do the test I mentioned in your foot bath of choice and see if any "toxins" magically appear when the test is done with no feet in the water? Or would you rather just dance around the obvious source of the "toxins", which is the machine itself?

Think about it, "toxins" in your body drawn out thru your feet? If that worked, why doesn't getting into a normal spa or whirlpool massage cause that effect on the feet?

And now it's time for disclaimers, I encourage anyone else posting here to do likewise: I do not sell or charge time for use in any type of foot baths, ionic or otherwise, therefore I have no vested interest which prevents me from revealing that foot bath detoxification devices don't acually work.

For a review by a professional spa owner, take a look at http://www.medspapress.com/articles/155/1/Caveat-Emptor%3A-Detoxifying-Foot-Baths

Here is an explanation of how the ionic detoxification footbaths work according to a manufacturer, check out the part where the water changing color is a "sales pitch":

There are several 'Detox' systems based around Foot Spas on the market today. Some manufacturers and retailers of such products make claims of purification and Detoxification that attract a lot of people. At beauty and health equipment exhibitions there are numerous stands that offer this kind of therapy and many visitors volunteer to give it a try.

But how effective is it really and how does it actually work? Is the fact that the water changes colour really proof that the Spa is detoxifying the body? Dr. Mary Staggs Ph.D. D.N. F.B.I.H., of the Mary Staggs clinic in Estepona, Southern Spain, is interviewed by R. B. Research.

Dr Staggs, we understand you were the first person to bring the concept of Ionic Foot Spa Detox systems into Europe?
Yes, back in 2001, I heard about Ionic Foot Spa's from both Dr Corey in Florida and Dr Morney in Denver Colorado. They had been working on the technique for some time before I was introduced to it. I found it fitted directly in with my research so I became involved in order to develop it further and decided to bring the concept to Europe.
What does the system consist off?
It's a Footbath into which we introduce an array. This is coupled to a power unit, which generates a low voltage electrical current - with both positive and negative polarities - which, due to the conductivity of saline water, work together to produce the desired effect.
Why did you become interested in 'Ionic Foot Spa Detox' systems?
Since it seemed this was a type of natural Detox process, I thought it would fit nicely alongside other therapies that I was using in the field of nutrition. The basic principle of the treatment was electrolysis and electro dialysis. But what caught my attention most early on was how the water, that the feet were submersed in, changed colour.
Some manufacturers claim that these colours correspond to specific body fluids, like cholesterol, uric acid, bile, blood, and even certain types of fats. What do you think of these claims?
Such claims are no more than a 'sales pitch'. From the early stages of development it was suggested that certain colours corresponded to certain types of organ drainage from the kidneys, liver, intestines and so on. But when we started our investigations, within the parameters of biochemistry, we found only Iron Sulphate in the water. We could not show the presence of Albumin or any other type of liquid, any kind of increment of sodium or potassium, urea, bilirubin transaminates, sugar and so on.
So why does the water change colour?
There are many factors that come into play. But basically we are talking about electrolysis.
                Please explain.
In order to produce electrolysis, we need an ionised solution to close the electric circuit between two electrodes. These electrodes, when connected to a source of continuous currents are submerged in a carrier solution - one charge is positive (anode) and the other negative (cathode).

This action produces ionisation. The positive ions within the solution will move towards the cathode and negative ones towards the anode. The word electrolysis means to rupture, separate, by means of electricity, through galvanic current. The water that is used has its own impurities that, due to the electrolysis, are drawn towards or separated from other components. The consequent ionisation in the water results in the formation of solids that are deposited on the floor of the container and that float on the surface of the water. Bubbles also appear and at the same time the water changes colour. We must also remember that the arrays are metallic and release waste, which in turn results in an electrolytic reaction causing corrosion. Another influencing matter is what we introduce into the water, eg. our feet. These have their own properties such as acidity or alkalinity. The skin can also contain remnants of soap, creams, nail varnish, pollutants and dyes from shoes, including shoe polish, bacteria, fungi and fibres. There might also be a release of substances from the sebaceous glands and dead cells. All these factors combined will influence the colour change.

We must consider the internal condition of the body, which will influence and manifest itself in the water. Here we need to take into account sub dermis conditions, the capillary microcirculation and other internal influences that can be emitted through the largest human organ, the skin. Last of all, temperature will also affect the chemical reactions in the water.

If we take into account all these factors we can begin to understand why the water changes colour.
Is the change in colour of water the same for every treatment and for every individual?
No. Different treatments, individuals and water sources are likely to yield different colours but in all our investigations we detected no biological substances, furthermore the colours do not correspond to any pathological state or any organ deficit or any specific bodily excretion. The reasons for the change in water are as I've already mentioned, but also we could add improper rinsing of detergents used in the cleaning of the array and the bowl, which might produce bubbles.

So there are many reasons why the water might change colour, which means the whole process is impossible to calibrate which in turn means that clinical interpretation is misleading.
