THE US has floated plans to turn Guantanamo Bay into a death camp, with its own death row and execution chamber.
Prisoners would be tried, convicted and executed without leaving its boundaries, without a jury and without right of appeal, The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported yesterday.
The plans were revealed by Major-General Geoffrey Miller, who is in charge of 680 suspects from 43 countries, including two Australians.
The suspects have been held at Camp Delta on Cuba without charge for 18 months.
General Miller said building a death row was one plan. Another was to have a permanent jail, with possibly an execution chamber.
The Mail on Sunday reported the move is seen as logical by the US, which has been attacked worldwide for breaching the Geneva Convention on prisoners of war since it established the camp at a naval base to hold alleged terrorists from Afghanistan.
But it has horrified human rights groups and lawyers representing detainees.
They see it as the clearest indication America has no intention of falling in line with internationally recognised justice.
The US has already said detainees would be tried by tribunals, without juries or appeals to a higher court. Detainees will be allowed only US lawyers.
British activist Stephen Jakobi, of Fair Trials Abroad, said: "The US is kicking and screaming against any pressure to conform with British or any other kind of international justice."
American law professor Jonathan Turley, who has led US civil rights group protests against the military tribunals planned to hear cases at Guantanamo Bay, said: "It is not surprising the authorities are building a death row because they have said they plan to try capital cases before these tribunals.
"This camp was created to execute people. The administration has no interest in long-term prison sentences for people it regards as hard-core terrorists."
Britain admitted it had been kept in the dark about the plans.
A Downing St spokesman said: "The US Government is well aware of the British Government's position on the death penalty."
And this folks is just the tip of the iceberg. Fema camps are also set up and ready to go on American soil with the same idea in store for Americans who don't go along with the new laws being set in place (basically giving up all your rights of freedom).
And some have wondered why I openly call Bu$h the new Hitler.
To all americans reading this.
Does the US powers that be think that the USA is invunerable to reprisals? course not.
A nuclear device is not that difficult to construct believe me, I fear it wont be long before some fanatical group obtains a small but lethal fission nuclear device and will detonate it by hand in some big city in the USA.
Who will suffer? normal americans thats who.
What can the rest of the world do but look on in despair? knowing full well what kind of reaction to expect from a wounded super power.
Who/what is really running things in the US and for what motive?
Iam a british geezer who used to love all things american, I had always dreamed of working for some software or robotics company in the US maybe becoming an american myself one day, not anymore.
I would not want to live in fear, fear of growing foreign hatred, fear of terrorist assault and worst of all fear of my own government.
Americans will eventually be prisoners in their own lands...literally.
These US plans to execute prsioners of war held at the camp are yet another example of US brutality (if true).
These and other actions of the US military must be ringing alarm bells in every other nations goverment.
The US military now believes that it is not just the worlds policeman anymore but judge, jury and executioner as well.
I for one feel deeply troubled by the continued aggressive and unilateral stance the US is taking, the country is becoming more like the old soviet union rather than an enlightened freedom loving democracy it once was.
Will the UN demand proper legal process for the 'illegal combatants' in US detainee camps? I for one doubt it while the balance of power is so firmly held by the USA.
