I have been reading around on problems that have been mentioned on this forum, and I recently came across a article about weak pelvic floor and sphincter muscles in the bowel.
The sphincter muscles I believe are the muscles which hold the gases and feces until you need to defecate. So in theory, if odors are coming out quite frequently, it might mean that the muscles have become weaker and are not responding in the way they should and therefor not holding the gases etc. in. In some cases the body loses the sense of when to go defecate and the body just stores the feces in the bowels, maybe its this loss of sense, and the build up of feces in the bowels that is causing the smell.
Maybe the solution is to strenghten and train the pelvic floor and sphincter muscles.
Its just one of many theories, I would be really intersted if any one has an opinion on this, or further information please reply!!!

This is very possible.Frighteningly possible!I have also thought about it but its very dreadful. If your theory is right,then....may God help us!!!
This theory may be related to anxiety, stress and panic attacks.Maybe after all tetracyclines have nothing to do with it(although being a suspect). Its possible that excessive anxiety causes the body to lose the sense of when to go defecate.Maybe this theory is related to nervous system abnormalities that interfere with the normal functions of the sphincter muscles.Who knows...?
Only assumptions is that we can make.
You say "Maybe the solution is to strenghten and train the pelvic floor and sphincter muscles."
If it where in my power to do it ,I would have done it in first place. To be honest, your theory was one of my first thoughts about the cause of the problem. But,how on earth can this be done?
First of all,
This situation we have all been thrown into is horrifying.
This first started when I was a Junior in Highschool, right smack dab in the middle. I quickly learned that I didnt have any friends. Im 19 now and in college. My main drive to get through the day is that one day I will have a Masters Degree,be a CPA, have a really good Accounting Career and will be making bank. That only holds up so long though, when reality checks in and im like "who the hell is going to give me job smelling like this." I often cry thinking there is no hope, but deep down in my heart I know one day this will be just a figment of our imagination.
About the weak sphincter muscles, there is an exercise that you can do to tighten the muscles, they are called Kegel exercises.
If you know you are about to be thrown into a social situation (this may sound crazy) but go to a happy place in your mind. Dont think about whats about to go on and all the bad things that can happen. I have found this helpful sometimes.
Hi,
I am a 28 year old female who has been experiencing this odor for over 10 years. It has truely been a nightmare. I feel like an outsider everywhere I go. How about we try and contact a specialist to go over our letters and maybe someone will be intrested in doing some research on this. I have some ideas about who to contact and maybe try and get things started from there. Please message me back if you would like to try this.

I also came to that conclusion to find after a referral from my doc to the hospital specialsit and after many tests that my spinchter muscle is in fact too tight and does not relax enough. This condition is known as Anismus. Prior to these tests I also had bowel retraining as I to felt I was not releasing enough waste and had symptoms of fullness. But this only made my condition worse. I have so much to say on this subject as I too have suffered with this condition for 20 years but have found a few things that help a bit but do has not cured my problem.
Im sorry all I did not make myself clear. I also thought that my sphincter muscles was causing the problem simply because I had run out of possible reasons for this stink. It was not causing the problem. What caused my tight sphincter muscle was the excessive flatulence I suffered from and all the years of holding it in instead of letting it out. This reprogrammed my muscles to go into spasms which interferred with me emptying my bowels. My sphincter muscles would not relax enough for the stools to come out. Instead I was releasing small amounts of waste and had the desire that I was not empty. In fact I wasnt but I was offered an enema kit which I used every other day and this has helped me to release the waste that has been sitting in my rectum that was contributing to the foul odour from my bottom area.
The doctors were not empathetic to my problem and many had told me for many years tht there was nothing wrong with my bowels. I know my body and knew they, not me, was wrong which was proved correct after the bowel tests.
What symptoms are you having and how have you dealt with it?
Im having exactly the same problems as you. I dont think my bowels are emptying fully either contributing to the stink. I feel full at random times of the day and theres always feces inside when im stinking.
I am also releasing gas in small amounts and my ass stinks bad. I know the smell is from my ass but i cannot control it. Its being released and i am never aware of it. My problems started with excessive enemas, so i dont know if enemas are the answer?what do you think?
My problems though have cleared up over the last year. Its almost gone. What have i done to clear it up?
I dont know what happened but my problem has been naturally decreasing from its full blown status which was like 8 years ago. Back then, i could stink up an entire school in a matter of seconds.
In addition it has decreased drastically over an year. I have been excersing, tried vegan diet for like 3 months, took fibre supplements, took hot baths to decrease haemorroids. I tried to correct my eating habits and eat 3 times a day regularly and not eat snacks in between meals. Excersing became a important part of my weekly routine. Tried to excercise my legs and splincter muscles. I went runnning everyday. Excersing releases the stress level in the body too.
I had anxiety after this problem started since high school. I tried to work on that too beacuse i think the mental state has a lot to do with how gas i released.
The main thing is to try have regular bowel movement, not spend too much time strainig and to achieve all that you have to do what i say in the earlier paragraphs
All this has helped and the stink is almost gone. I dont know what specifically caused the stink to dissapear.
Please respond.Hope this helps you. Hit me anytime if you have any questions
Wow. And you didnt use any supplements, just changed your diet and excercised
Well done you. You touched on one thing which I thought was very important. You did not snack between meals. I truly beleive that your digestion plays a valuable role in the your health and our fecal odour. If the digestive system is out of sync I believe many digestive disorders can be triggered by this. Anyway, not snacking between meals allows your digestive system to rest, get stronger by producing enough of the right juices and enzymes and in the long run works more effectively. Genius! I snack all the time and never give my dig. system a breather. However my diet is generally healthy and I dont eat alot of rubbish but dont deny myself what I want either. I have also done the exclsion diets and no carbs, sugar ,wheat and alcohol diets to no avail.
There is no sensible answer to why i did so many enemas. It was pretty stupid.
Ok let me try anyways. If you read my earlier posts you can find out..but ill jst explain it now.
I used to live in india when i was a kid. People use water in india instead of toilet paper. SO in my bathroom there was a hose thing that sprayed water. I was a pretty stupid kid and was like in my 8th grade and i used to pump up my whole digestive system with water. This was just for fun. I repeated this for like 2 years every day. I guess i messed up my whole digestive system.
Pretty dumb huh? I suffered and like when i was in 9th and 10th grade my problems started and started with a blast. suddenly one day it appeared all out of nowhere. i remember that day when the problem started. I can pinpoint that particular day.
I goto college now. I was jus done with a presentation today. Im so glad because im normally really nervous about presentations because my mind used to blank out when i was in front of a lot of people. But everythings completely turned around now. Im pretty confident now and work in target partime too.
Everything just takes some time to settle around . Youll be fine.
What are you doing now to improve your condition now?Hows your problem now? Is it getting better? I think you are right about not eating too many snacks.
Sorry i replied to your message but it isnt showin up..dont know why.
but to make a long story short...i was in india when i was a kid and people in india use water instead of toil paper.there was like a hose thing to spray water and being the stupid kid i was...i used to pump my bowels with water completely ..jst for fun..this lasted for like 1-2 years...and suddenly one day i started stinking..im positive the major stink is comng from my anus...
thats my story..and to think i would have a different life story if my dad dint make that hose in the bathroom..
whats going on with you now? im in college trying to graduate...
I can't beleive so many people have this problem. I smell so terrible, although my family also doesn't smell it. I'm 30 and i think I have smelled like this for about 10 years. I am currently unemployed and have just applied for welfare as I panic at the thought of causing the whole office to smell. People are constantly putting their finger under there noses when I am near and I hear often people saying "what's that smell?" I don't even really know where the smell is coming from, I am very clean - wash everything (myself, clothes, etc) more then ANYone I know. Friends have also hinted about the smell, although I was too embarrassed to ask them about it. I even heard a neighbor say "she stinks" and I am starting to think my whole apartment smells so bad that he is smelling it from HIS apt. I'm not even sure exactly WHAT I smell like, as it is hard for us to smell ourselves. In the morning sometimes though, I notice that my bedroom smells like feces. I have a pain on my right side too, which someone else had mentioned. I don't know what to do anymore, but I am starting to avoid all interactions as much as possible and that sucks because I am a single mom, attractive and want to work and have a social life. But I can't if I smell like this!!!!!!!!! And the doctors that I did get the courage to ask told me it was psychological. I know it ISN'T. HELP!!!!!!!
was the first thought that crossed my mind when I found this site. I had been searching The Net for a long time hoping to find some information on this phenomenon.
My Harsh Reality:
I STINK, it seems from every pore and every orifice on my body. My overriding body odor is feculent with a number of variations on the stench, it has ranged from rotten eggs to diarrhea and all the in between. But, this odor is getting even stronger competition from the odors emanating from my feet; For most of my life I've sweated a lot from my hands and feet (hyperhidrosis), literally like water running from a tap and because of this I have to contend with rancid foot odor. My shoes, from sandals to sneakers, start to reek within minutes of the first wear and the smell saturates my environment. I'm not done, there is also the crotch odor, the ripe underarm odor, and halitosis.
To put it bluntly, I smell like a decaying corpse or a hobo who has been on the streets, unwashed for years. I want to crawl out of my own skin.
This is not a matter of personal hygiene; I’m a clean person, more so than the average. A "normal" person wouldn't believe the lenghts I've gone to to minimize, if not eliminate altogether the odors, but I'm sure some of you would. (ex. when it first started, I was so freaked out, I finished four full bottles of my mother's perfume in two months, and was she pissed.)
I've been dealing for more than thirteen years and the impact it’s had on my life has been astronomically painful to endure and it has placed decisive limits on my quality of life. Everyday is a struggle to face the world shunned and scorned due to something I can’t control. I’ve been to doctors, but forgive me they're useless. I’ve also searched the internet, but haven’t found any truly helpful information.
And, it has gotten and is continuing to get worse as time goes on. I'm not really living on hope any more, I'm still alive only because I haven't dropped dead. But, I'm still fighting for my life, minute by minute and increasingly second by second until time runs out and I'm consumed or until I can get my head above water and finally take a deep odor free breath.
Optimally, I would like a cure, realistically I'm a stanch
pessimist by experience. If nothing else I'm posting this so that the next person like me who comes across this site can know that they are not alone, I thank every person who posted here for letting me know that I'm not alone.
P.S. Interestingly, I had a pretty good sense of smell and could smell myself and other odors outside of myself for most of my life, but over the past three years, I've become virtually anosmic (loss of sense of smell). How do I know I still stink? Every now and then I get a whiff. Also, people haven't changed, they still react like they smell shit and run for the hills.
I've also noticed in the past few weeks that it seems that my sense of taste is diminishing (granted I was very sick recently, flu-like illness). I'm becoming more and more numb literally and figuratively (I don't feel physical pain as intensely as I use to). I think the culmination of the stress of so many years is causing my senses to shut down.
I have had this condition since age 19. I am 36 now. I wonder if our bodies are reacting to a mild form of stress which triggers our bodies to put out certain types of pheromones when we get out in public. Maybe its a pheromone or hormone problem instead of weak muscles.
Maybe its like a skunk, (sounds funny, I know) which releases its strong scent when it feels threatened. Also, animals release pheromones when trying to attract a mate, and they probably, some anyway, are also able to release a scent that repels others. Just a thought.
I am interested in how many people have went to a doctor and explained this and if any have received any advice, etc.
I think we should forward all the email discussions to some type of specialist at a leading research hospital, to ask for their help, to show them that there is a group of people who have the same condition with similar symptoms and ask for their advice.
Do you all have any idea where we could send these messages to?
Hi,
I am a 28 year old female who has been experiencing this problem since I was 17 years old. It has devasted my life. I have looked for answers everywhere. I came across a doctor in Pennsylvania who does research on the fish odor syndrome at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. although the odor I experince is more of a fecal body odor he tested me for fish odor syndrome the results were negative. I do believe if a group of us all came together maybe some specialist would take an intrest and began some testing. I do feel this would be a good place to start. Please get back with me on this. Lets try to organize this and make it happen.

Oh, poor you... poor us. I agree with you that I feel bit a better knowing that I am not alone with this problem. I also feel alot worse, knowing that none of us seem to know why, from where or how to stop ourselves from smelling.
If only I could locate the source, but i think there are multiple sources. I brush my teeth, tongue and floss literally about 20 times a day. I am equipped with the strongest gums, listerine pocket packs of every flavour, etc. My stomach must be a source as well. I never eat garlic, onions or any kind of spices anymore.
I still stink though. And i'm pretty sure that SH*T is the predominant odor. Among others. I feel like my lungs, sinuses, intestines, crotch, stomach and every other part of me is giving of a nasty odor. And probably all kinds of different ones mixing to REALLY make a stench. HELP!!!
