In a recent DAMS Newsletter, I read an interview with Dr. Timothy
Ray, the developer of NDF. He recommends that people not take
therapeutic doses of "probiotics" at the beginning of heavy metal
detox or while they have mercury Amalgams still in place. He said
his concern is that the probiotics will convert the mercury into
methyl mercury. He cites 3 "of the many" scientific studies done
with probiotics. "Transformations of Inorganic Mercury by Candida
Albicans and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae" in Applied and Environmental
Microbiology, "The Methylization of Mercuric Chloride by Human
Intestinal Bacteria" in Experentia, and "Methylation of Mercury from
Dental Amalgam and Mercuric Chloride by Oral Streptococci In-Vitro"
in J. Dental Research.
Oh no! I've been on heavy metal chelate program since last week, and have also been taking my probiotics. The health food store I bought it from had a naturopath who didn't advise against taking both at the same time. I guess I'll stop the probiotics and continue withthe chelate. What do you think?
I really don't know, it is not clear about exactly which bacteria streams or yeast are the one that Methylate mercury. I have read many different articles with different information like this:
"The methylization of mercuric chloride by human intestinal bacteria"; Experentia, 31:9; 1975; Sept 15, 1064-5; IR Rowland; P Grasso; MJ Davies; British Industrial Biological Research Association, Woodmansterne Road, Cashalton, Surrey, SM5 4DS, England.
"Most strains of staphylococci, steptococci, yeasts and E. coli isolated from human feces, could synthesize methyl mercury compounds. In contrast, few strains of obligate anerobes could do so. Up to 6 ng methyl mercury/ml were formed in 44 hours from 2 ug / ml mercuric chloride."
Experiment and Findings
1. Except for lactobacillus and bifido-bacteria, all cultures incubated in aerobic conditions.
2. Streptococci had highest methylization rate, followed by Staph, and E. coli, then yeast.
3. Very few strains of GI friendly bacteria methylized. Those that did, produced extremely little
Why do you recommend that a person not take therapeutic doses of beneficial bacteria, or probiotics, at the beginning of heavy metal detox or while they have Amalgams still in the teeth?
Let's look at 3 of many scientific studies done with probiotics, yeast and oral bacterial:
"Transformations of Inorganic Mercury by Candida Albicans and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae," Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Jan 1991; 57:1:245-247; S Yannai; I Berdicevsky, L Duek; Dept. of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, and Unit of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
"The Methylization of Mercuric Chloride by Human Intestinal Bacteria," Experentia, 31:9; 1975; Sept 15, 1064-5; IR Rowland; P Grasso; MJ Davies; British Industrial Biological Research Association, Woodmansterne Road, Cashalton, Surrey, SM5 4DS, England.
"Methylation of Mercury from Dental Amalgam and Mercuric Chloride by Oral Streptococci in-vitro". Heintze, U. Edwardsson, S., Derand, T. and Birkhed, D. Scand. J. Dental Research 91(2) 150-152, 1983.
Oral bacteria, yeast and probiotics all methylate mercury. Therefore, you want to minimize any contact between them. This could explain some of the adverse reactions reported by parents and patients who have begun detox with massive doses of probiotics in the interest of correcting dysbiosis or fungal overgrowth. No doubt dysbiosis is a pressing problem, but I think that the additional methyl mercury produced is much worse. It adds to the damage to the nervous system and further promotes the dysbiosis by further compromising the intestinal immune system.
You know, I have noticed that my symptoms have gotten worse since I started the heavy metal detox & probiotics at the same time. How long should one wait to go back on probiotics after starting the detox?
What are you doing for heavy metal detox? this is very important as most the products outside on the market just stir mercury on your body but don't remove it safely, creating lot of problems.
IV Chealtion is very harsh for your liver and kidneys and you could damage any of those organs. Chelation should be done very slow and with very slow dosis, basically using DMSA or DMPS oral but not IV at all, that is the worst and most harmful of all chelation therapies. After all the mercury on your blood stream has been removed by the DMSA/DMPS then you add ALA(alpha lipoic acid) that cross blood brain barrier(BBB) to remove it from there, but it must be done with an special protocol to keep the levels on the chealtion agent stady on your blood, otherwise you will just get it to be redistributed some place else on your body creating lot of side effects and problems to the person. Also if too much chelation agent is dump in your blood then you will overloading liver and kidney capacity to detox metal toxicity.
WARNING: Chelation is a very harsh treatment adding a very toxic agent to remove another even more toxic metal like mercury, therefore it should be done under profesional supervision and with the due test to follow up the status of each organ that might be affected by the chelation agents such a liver, and kidneys.
Hi Rod, I'm doing an oral chelation therapy called Pleo-Chelate. It's a homeopathic, and has magnesium sulphate, potassium chloride & sodium chloride. I'm also supporting my liver & kidneys with some homeopathics while detoxing. Let me know what you think, anything else I should be doing. I've stopped the probiotics for now but am still taking Pau D'Arco for the candida. Cheers, GC
Well, I didn't know that chelator, however it is based on Sulfur agents which as per I have read do not tide hard enough mercury to them hence it might gets redistributed instead. Also homeopathic chelators work well but take a lot of greif and a longer time to clear your body from metals using them. Also if you have your sulfur metabolism not working well as most of mercury bearers have you won't be metabolizing well sulfur suplements therefore I will suggest you to go with Alpha Lipoic Acid but do it on cycles of 3 days on 11 off every 3 hours with dosis of 50 to 100mg even during the night time, on off periods supplement your self with minerals and vitamins to restablish. If you are high on copper do not chelate with ALA as it hold copper to be excreted via bowel and increase it through urination. To lower copper use zinc and molybdenum.
Thanks Rod! I found myself to be VERRRRYYYYY emotional when I started doing the chelating, lots of crying and anger. Much better now though. I am very high in copper and lead as well. Any advice on getting rid of those? Thanks again!
For lead DMSA was done basically and approbed by FDA for that purpouse, for copper it is easier, just avoid all food containing it like nuts and add with each meal between 15 to 20 mg of zinc and 100-200 mcg of Molybdenum and also 1gr of Vitamin C to avoid absorbing copper and get rip of it, it might take u 4 months to lower copper levels to normal.
