Hi,
Why am I getting a yellow fuzz or like chalk on top of my kefir grains? This happens when AI go to pour the milk off my kefir grains. Has anyone had this happen? My grains are really growing like wild and I would like to start sharing them with others. Could my grains be going bad? I truly don't think so since the grains can travel and survive. I hear kefir grains can truly take a licking and keep on ticking!
Thanks,
Robbie
Hi Robbie. :) I have never had this happen with mine, what do you use to cover your jar? I use a white plastic lid. Mine are growing like weeds too! I have been eating some of my extras (though it made the shake taste realllly sour). Once when I had forgotten my grains for a few days, I put them in fresh milk but they still didn't smell right so I rinsed them off before I put them in fresh milk the next time. They've been fine since then. Might try that? Anyway...just my thoughts...how r u doing? Caitlin Lorraine
I suggest you agitate, shake, or swirl the kefir jar around several times while it is fermenting during the 24 hours. It mixes the contents and prevents some of the probiotic organisms from forming a layer on the top. If you find a layer of white mold on top you have not shkaen the jar during storage. The white kefir mold is harmless and can be spooned off.
Excellent tip. I used to forget stirring up my kefir during fermentation before and sometimes there's just a whole buch of weird stuff on the top.
Ever since i've agitated my kefir once in a while, everything's been fine.
Just remember if you're going to rinse your kefir grains, use distilled water and not tap water! Distilled water is absolutely pure H20 with no chemicals whatsoever. : )
