I had no idea that I could purchase a stool test kit at the pharmacy. I will do that today.
You are so right about the processed and junk foods. I try to purchase healthy snacks from the whole foods market that resemble junk food. So far, I've discovered that my son can tolerate oat and corn products very well. He does fine as long as they don't contain too much fat. I once had a momentary lapse of sanity and allowed him to have corn chips. The results wheren't horrible, but I definitely noticed a reduction in stool form because of the excess fat. The only thing that seems to give my son bad stool form is wheat flour. It's funny, he's been tested for wheat allergy but the result was negative. Any product containing wheat flour, whole or otherwise, produces a liquid stool every time. I've also noticed that stool form is reduced when not enough vegetables are eaten daily.
This treatment you've shared with us is really a Godsend. I can't imagine where my son would be right now if I hadn't found this info when I did!
Thanks again for everything Sheldon! I'll let you know what the results of the stool test are, and will continue to update as often as I can.
Thanks for you posting - it is a real inspiration to me. I am struggling right now, and the fact that I get to read your testimonial now and then is a great help to me. My disease is pretty mild (so far) to the rest of UC people.
I am having some ups and down since starting the treatment 5 days ago. But I will continue full speed ahead and work to get off the medicine if it is possible.
Another set back: I had some good movements yesterday 3 all had a trace of blood, but looked really good. Then this morning, I got a red bright red one - seemed to be the last peice passed and felt like it scrapped on the way out. :-(
I had a business lunch so I had a grilled chicken sandwhich - could it have been the 2 peices of onion and lettece on it? That is the only thing I can think of.
Am I using the right Vit E? I got the puritan #460 Vit E 400IU...I see my GI on thursday, dreading the thought of having to go on predinsone...

But I have been feeling really good overall. Still not happy with my weight loss, but it seems to have leveled off.
I made homeade chicke soup with fresh carrotts, Celery , potato, onion...I have been really eating that up...
Your vitamins are OK.
If you had a scab on your arm and kept picking it off,
it would never heal.Your colon is in an irritated state. This condition alone makes healing difficult.Than you eat wrong foods(raw lettuce, onion, grilled sandwich)that will scrap the colon wall and then wonder where the blood is coming from. Are you eating enough other fresh cooked vegetables? Broccoli,Brussel sprouts, brown rice, parsnip, turnips, asparagus etc they each have a different mix of unprocessed fibers, minerals and vitamins that could solve basic causes. What vitamins are you taking? An irritated colon has poor nutritional absorption and it therefore makes it necessay to take a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement.Good report.
I thought a grilled chicken would be ok - must be the lettec and onion I would surmise.
I am adding other veggies as well. The soup has been a godsend, so that is about gone. Will have salmon and other veggies as well.
I got the puritan vitamins the other day - was using another brand of 'natural' vit E with Topherphls. I hope this will show some improvement.
Had a good bm - just one streak on it, so there was some improvement...There are setbacks on the road of life, I will have to deal with them as I go...
Well, the fecal blood test result was positive. I suspected that it might be because my son has been cheating on the diet for the last week without my permission - and not in a small way. Not to mention the fact that he hasn't been eating his vegetables that I pack in his lunch - and sometimes with dinner (I found his veggies in the cat's bowl last night after he went to bed). Well, as the saying goes - you give them and inch and they take a mile. It's back to the basic diet and enemas again for him. He's not happy about it, but there's no alternative as far as I'm concerned. I plan to perform the test again in about a month. Will post the results then as well. Thanks again Sheldon, for everything.
Well, it's been more than two months since my last post but I have fantastic news. I gave my son the Fecal Occult Blood Test last week, and it was negative for blood.
Back in February when my son's stool tested positive for blood, he wasn't following the diet very well. I put him back strictly on the diet, and his stool form improved within a few days. I did not resume the enemas because it is very invasive for me to do them for him since he's 10 now, and he can't do it himself yet (yes, we tried). Within one month of going back to stricly following sheldon's diet, my son's stools became very hard and infrequent. He had no pain, but complained that he felt constipated and having a bowel movement was sometimes difficult. I immediately increased his vegetable intake, and the results improved a bit. Since I knew he wasn't totally constipated, I let things continue that way for a few weeks.
I recently spoke with a friend of mine who had her colon removed almost two years ago. She was really impressed with Sheldon's procedure and encouraged me to explore any and all holistic treatment options because living without a colon and only a J-Sac in its place has not given her the "better quality of life" as she might have hoped. I told her of my son's progress with the procedure, and mentioned that his stools were not as regular as I'd have liked. She suggested I try giving him fruit in the form of organic baby food - an idea resulting from a time when she lived solely on baby food because her flare was so bad that she could tolerate no solid food. I went to the market the next day and purchased stage 1 pears and peaches. I allow him one container per day, and it has improved his stool form and regularity greatly. He had been eating the baby food for one week prior to performing the stool test, so I know it produced no negative result for him. I would not suggest using the baby food unless you are certain that the colon is healed, though. This is the first step for us in introducing new foods into the diet successfully. I will not introduce anything else until my son has kept with the positive results for at least a month since starting the baby food fruit, and then only food similar to those that he is already consuming.
I know how difficult it is to follow the diet strictly. I had to come up with some creative ideas in order to keep my son interested in the food he is ingesting. My first and probably best dicovery is to cook the brown rice in chicken broth. I use the organic kind, but you have to read the ingredients. Only use the kind that is chicken broth and salt, and maybe onions. If you can't find organic, then Swanson makes something called "Natural Goodness" which is ok - it doesn't have MSG or other nasty preservatives. I use two cups of broth for every cup of rice I cook. Bring the broth to a boil, add the rice and bring back up to a boil. Cover and reduce the heat to simmer and cook for 40-45 minutes. It really is delicious, and you can cook enough to last the whole week. My son eats it for breakfast many days since he is sick of eggs at this point. I even add it to chicken soup along with uncooked barley when I make it. I usually only make the soup when my son is sick with a cold, etc. since it produces reduced stool form. I also use canned tuna and chicken once a week each. I add a little organic mayo (made with olive oil), and a bit of salt. He eats it plain with his rice or potoato and veggies, or sometimes eats it on a brown rice cake. I buy the plain or lightly salted organic brown rice cakes. Rice cakes also make a great snack alone, or dipped in pure maple syrup. I also make deviled eggs w/ the organic mayo once in a while. You have to be careful, though, too much fat is bad so go easy on the mayo - use it lightly and only once in a while. I racked my brain at Christmas time to find a recipe for a sweet treat that my son could have other than tapioca pudding. I found an old recipe of mine for meringue cookies. The ingredients include egg whites, vinegar, corn starch (which is optional), and sugar. I also later added carob chips and later again chocolate chips, neither of which produced a negative result. You can also sweeten with maple syrup, but the cookies don't get as crisp as with sugar. If anyone would like the recipe (which is unbelieveably easy), please let me know and I'll post it.
I also want to tell you all that the vitamins and pro-biotics have been just as important as the diet and procedure, so don't knock it till you try it long enough to see how much it helps.
My son doesn't go back to his GI doc until June, and I'm not sure yet if she wants to run tests before his appointment or not. I will post again with results of tests and/or appointment when available.
Best wishes to all of you following this procedure. Stick to it, and you will find your health again!
