Thanks for your reply and your encouragement. How long did you do the enemas and did you reach the max dose? So glad you found relief . . .hopefully, my daughter and I will be there soon as well!
I took the Rowasa enemas that the doctor prescribed, for 2 weeks, but after 2 weeks discontinued all meds, took the E enemas at night (even while on vacation), and kept on with Sheldon’s instructions, following the 6 day diet to the letter. I thought I took good notes, but can't find anything on how many Vit E I took...I'm thinking 12 to 14, but Sheldon might have said that I didn't have to take that many.
I bought the Vitamin E 400-IU d-alpha tocopheryl from Vitamin World, buy 1 get 1 free, so that was a good deal.
I hope you will try Sheldon's diet for 6 days. It's only 6 days, and it worked for me and for so many others, it can't hurt anything. Please let all the forum know if this helps. I'll be thinking of you both.
Hello Christina,
I have not used any prescription medication or the vit E enema in over 25 years.During this time all my colonoscopies have shown no polyps or problems and my blood tests have all been good. The hepatitis C has disappeared from my blood. My medical records prove this.Every colon condition is different. However, from my own and other experiences the procedure should be tried for the earliest positive results then used for a base from which you can you can later test other diet foods one at a time.Let Your colon be your judge.Stool form, blood and number of bowel movements will point the way.My entire colon was severely damaged with 2 strictures. If I eat fruit, I will lose stool form.I eat bananas, walnuts and small amounts of raw vegetables.I still eat many cooked vegetables with every meal and use the procedure diet as a guide.I eat in restaurants and lead a normal life.I still drink distilled water. No processed food.My diet provides the proper environment for growth of good bacteria.UC taught me "you are what you eat".As you can see at this site, most if not all users of the procedure get a positive result. However, the most important and helpful information is the final result which is seldom posted. Please keep us informed. sheldon
I really want to try the enema portion of the procedure, but to be honest, I am just scared. I know that things can be absorbed into the bloodstream from the colon/rectum and am scared of the high dose of vit e. I'm not so concerned about doing it on myself, but more concerned about my 6 year old. Just a bit paranoid about these things, but want a cure more than anything. Thanks for your replies,
Hello Christina,
If you decide to try the procedure,it should first be tried by you.I have never received an negative side effect response from the use of the vitamin E enema.
I am following the diet closely and stool slowely becomes formed. I eat a good portion of veggies with every meal. Today i have another bad day because i wnet to the bathroom twice already and i feel like i want to go one more time. I believe this is because an hour before the breakfast i had one glass of water and i think that made the stool more loose.
Listen to your colon.Your colon is still in a very irritated condition and you are probably right about the water.Thank you for the web information.I think the basic idea is correct.

Definition of Inflammation
Inflammation: A basic way in which the body reacts to infection, irritation or other injury, the key feature being redness, warmth, swelling and pain. Inflammation is now recognized as a type of nonspecific immune response.
More information: In technical terms, the inflammatory response directs immune system components to the site of injury or infection and is manifest by increased blood supply and vascular permeability which, in technical terms, allows chemotactic peptides, neutrophils, and mononuclear cells to leave the intravascular compartment. Microorganisms are engulfed by phagocytic cells (e.g., neutrophils and macrophages) in an attempt to contain the infection in a small-tissue space. The response includes attraction of phagocytes in a chemotactic gradient of microbial products, movement of the phagocyte to the inflammatory site and contact with the organism, phagocytosis (ingestion) of the organism, development of an oxidative burst directed toward the organism, fusion of the phagosome and lysosome with degranulation of lysosomal contents, and death and degradation of the organism. When quantitative or qualitative defects in neutrophil function result in infection, the infection usually is prolonged and recurrent and responds slowly to antimicrobial agents. Staphylococci, gram-negative organisms, and fungi are the usual pathogens responsible for these infections.
Isn't the paper interesting? It explains why your procedure with vitamin E may be beneficial for the colon to heal.
I have one more question. You said to use 10 caps of vitamin E in 1.5 tablespoon of distilled water and it is the same as the volume of corticoid enema. I believe the volume of corticoid enema is larger than 1.5 tablespoon. Am i right or wrong?
I just want to clarify if my procedure is correct. Unfortunately i do not have an enema bulb but i have a container after Rowasa enema (60ML). I fill a half of the container with distilled water and then 10 caps of vitamin E. Is that fine? Is it too much of water?
update: Veggies seem to stop my diarrhea. It has been 5th day on the diet. Stool is not bond as much as i would like it to be. Average 3 trips to the bathroom everyday.
Kamkos the procedure is a prescription not a recipe.
Don't second guess what has worked for many people in 5 years of posting. No one knows the exact condition of your colon and we are trying to obtain an early positive result from which we can judge future changes.Use 1.5 tablespoons of distilled water only for all enemas.Buy the correct syringe.A wrong procedure can delay healing.
update: One week on the diet. Everything is going good. Today I havent been to the bathroom and i do not have urgency. Stool is half and half formed. It is hard to see any blood.
I think i am still losing weight. I do not know why this may be because with vegetables and because i am not eating any fats. Is it normal to lose weight while on the diet? Is there anything i can do to increase my weight?
I do still have a lot of gas but most of the time i can pass it. Is it normal with the diet? is there anything i can do to decrease the amount of gases?
On the left side of my stomach (left side of the colon) i feel small itching every time when i think stool is passing by. I believe the ulcers are not healed there and the passing stool creates that feeling. Have you heard anything about it from different people? There was one day where i had completely formed stool I realized that it had some blood. It had like a couple spots of blood on the stool. It is like the stool was on the ulcer and the ulcer was bleeding and created that stain.
Hello Kamkos,
You are doing the procedure correctly. The gas is probably because your colon has not adjusted to your high fiber diet.It may take two months. In the meantime, you will be living a normal life and eating a very healthy diet.As your colon heals, you should gain weight. The colon heals slowly.Good report.sheldon
The right kind of fats will come from cold water fish, eggs, olive oil and chicken.
update: I am doing good. It seems like i have gone down to one trip to the bathroom a day. I still have huge problems with gases making me feel bloated. Stool becomes more and more formed. I do still see some blood. I do still have some itching on my left side while the stool passes by and i still believe this is because the colon is not healed yet.
Can you tell me what is the logic behind the vitamin E enemas? I know it is a powerful antioxidant but it seems like the enema reaches only the lower part of the colon. Would it be better to have the enema cover more area in the colon? I do not know i am just wondering. Is it absorbed to the blood and/or works directly on the tissue?
question about the diet: Is it possible to add honey to the diet? I need to add a lot of calories to the diet and honey seems like a good way to do so. I have already added olive oil but i think i need more fat.
Hello Kamkos,
For the gas,I can only suggest some exercise like walking or buy a re bounder for jumping at home.Do you do any exercise or walking? Did you eat many vegetables as part of your diet before you started the procedure? The enema will effect the entire length of the colon. This information was answered by a doctor 25 years ago. It helped heal the entire length of my colon. As stated in articles,IU is started by an oxidative attack at a point on the colon. The anti oxide effect of vitamin E reduces this excessive colon damaging oxide response which was originally started by an over active immune system response to a colon injury.Of course this is an educated guess. The important point is the result. The procedure works. The colon heals slowly.
You are getting your best fats from chicken, eggs and salmon.Honey has no fat.You can try honey if you need the taste to help maintain your diet then observe the result. You should gain weight after your colon heals. An irritated colon does not absorb nourishment well. sheldon
update: doing just fine. This is the beginning of my third week on the diet. Stool becomes more and more formed. One trip a day to the bathroom. It is really hard to tell now if i have any blood. I still have gases and the feeling of irritation.
Before i started the procedure i was a very active man. Jogging and other sports were my way of living. Now, i am a little confused if i can do any sports except walking, can't i?
I know, honey does not have any fat but it has a lot of calories. I want to increase my calories intake so i will not lose any weight anymore. It seems like veggies and low fat diet do not keep up with my fast metabolism rate. So far my only source of calories is chicken, fish and olive oil. I try to add the oil to all my meals. I also make my own yogurt and i add honey for the taste. Is sugar fine for the diet? if so, how much sugar can i consume a day?
Can you also check my yesterday's menu and tell me if my diet is fine and what kind of modifications can i add to it so i will get as much as i can from food?
breakfast: one chicken breast, veggies: carrots, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, one glass of water and the drugs,
later during the day i had a vegetable soup,
lunch: fish and the same veggies like i had for breakfast plus one cup of water
Hello Kamkos,
I can only guess about the cause of your irritation. However, since only two weeks have passed since the start of the procedure there probably is not a complete healing of your colon. The gas should disappear when the good bacteria in your colon become better established. You can buy the fecal occult blood test at the drug store and test your stool for blood.I would wait until your colon is healed(CURED) before trying heavier exercise.Try walking faster.Your colon will give you the correct answer. When you exercise, your body needs extra sugar to burn. When you don't burn the extra sugar it turns into fat or the body has to spend valuable stored energy to excrete the unused sugar. As of now,the extra empty calories of sugar(honey) would be a burden on your system.Try eating more grains.Brown rice, barley or corn. They are also carbohydrates that can give you fiber, minerals and vitamins and also add weight. No more then two tablespoons of olive oil. Drink 6 glasses of water.Your procedure is good because it shows steady progress.Your not losing weight.Your mind is in a hurry.Your colon has its own schedule.Again, thank you for the update.sheldon
update: The end of my third week on the diet and vitamin E enemas. Stool is formed! I haven't seen it in this way for more than a year!!! I do not see any blood. Still a lot of gas. I think i have found an explanation for the irritation feeling. I go to the bathroom once a day. I think i may need to go twice a day once in the morning and once at night. If i do not go in the morning i have the feeling like i want to go the bathroom but i can hold it in. It is not like the urgency feeling when you have diarrhea.
After a while of thinking about the cause of that irritation feeling i think i found a reasonable explanation. I was sitting on my chair without moving. When i turned my body to the right, like scratching, i felt the irritation. I gave up exercises for a couple days to see what happens. Guess what, the irritation feeling is not that intensive as it used to be and sometimes it is not there anymore. The feeling increases when i do exercises or have a not formed stool. It seems like the colon is healing and there may be a scab or scabs on top of the ulcers. When the scab is pulled or it is dissolved in unformed stool then I get the feeling.
The diet is doing just fine. I haven’t eaten so much veggies in my life. I think i am not losing any weight anymore. I eat four or five meals a day and all of them are with veggies. I will wait a little more before i buy the test to check blood in stool. I just want to give it more time to heal. Vitamin E enemas are doing fine. I take all the vitamins and i am tapering the meds. I eat yogurt twice a day and i take good probiotic pills. If i didn’t have the gases then i would say that colitis is not a problem anymore.
I am just wondering if soy milk is fine. I would like to use it with some of my food. I have taken your advice and i eat barley. It would taste good with soy milk
Hello Kamkos,
Your information is helpful.I agree with you about the message your colon is sending.I drink soy milk.If possible, use organic.Brown rice would also be a good addition.sheldon
So it has been more than a month on the diet and vitamin e enema. At this moment i do not have any bleeding and stool is formed. I do not have any urgency and i produce one two BM per day. However i have still problem with gases. I do not feel bloated anymore but the gases are just annoying. I eat two cups a home made yogurt that have a lot of good bacteria and i hope the gases will decrease over time.
I spoke with my doctor about the diet but i did not tell him about the enemas. I did not know how he would react so i was quite. He said that my current situation is not in result of the diet but Prednisone. I do not know about it but i hope this is the diet and the enema that makes wonders. I am tapering Prednisone in the speed of light and i have not observed any flare ups. Hopefully they won't appear.
Sheldon, do you know what is the minimum time for colon to heal? Would that be bad if i cheat on the diet once in a while?
My stool is formed but i think i am not quite OK yet. I do not know but i have a feeling like my colon is healing but it is not healed yet completely.
I do not remember when i told you about the irritation of my left side while stool is passing. I just want to let you know that this is not a problem anymore. The irritation subsidized once i stopped exercising. I am wondering maybe it is time to restart my exercise routine. Should i do it or should i wait a couple more months?
Hello Kamkos,
The colon heals slowly. They say there is no CURE for UC.I believe from my own and others experiences the reason for the no CURE idea is because the colon was not given sufficient time to completely heal in the first place. The damage to each colon and the life style
of each person is different. This can make a difference in healing time.First wait until you are off all medications( reduce slowly). If no negative reaction, continue
with the procedure a while longer. Then take the stool test for blood. If no blood, stop the enemas. If no negative reaction, you are CURED.If you get a negative reaction such as lose of stool form, extra bowel movements or blood, continue with the procedure.Your colon is not healed. The most important idea to remember is DON'T be in a hurry.Your colon will not heal in such short time. After your colon is healed CURED,you can try one different food at a time.Every healed colon condition is different and each will react differently to different foods.Your colon will give you the correct answer.Judge by colon reaction not your food preferences. In the meanwhile, you are living a normal life and eating a healthy diet. The goal is CURE.
Here is a little update of what is happening. Everything seems to be fine. I have one BM a day mostly in the morning. Stool seems to be formed when it comes out but it breaks apart when it is in the water. Is it normal? I think stool should be harder but i am not sure. I am still on the diet and vitamin E enema. Still a lot of problems with gases!!!!!! I am not losing any weight anymore.
Two days ago i think i had a food poisoning. In the morning i had a regular BM but then during the day i had two more. Unfortunately the two had liquid stool. The next day I did not go to the toilet at all. Today i went to the bathroom only once in the morning.
I eat a lot of chicken, fish and vegetables. I eat two cups of yogurt a day that has been made according to SCD diet. Would it be bad if i increase it to three cups a day?
I am also wondering if there is anything else with a lot of fiber that i can add to the diet?
Hello Kamkos,
You can eat any kind of vegetable they all have different fibers, vitamins and minerals.Once you off prednisone your healing will increase. However, remove it slowly
to avoid colon stress. It might be worth a try to stop the yogurt and see if this might be the cause of your gas or try kefer or soy yogurt later. You have to be a detective
and observe your colons reaction when removing or adding one different food. Not all colon conditions will react the same to the same food.Instead of honey you might try
unsulphured molasses.Once your colon is healed(CURED)it will not have a sensitive
reaction to food.Your postings are informative.Thank you.sheldon
Use only the right kind of fiber prov[ded by the procedure diet list of vegetables
and grains.Wrong food fibers can irritiate the colon and delay healing.
if you ever wondered just how a high-fiber diet helps keep you, well, "regular," scientists may have the answer.
their results suggest that as these bulky foods make their way down the gastrointestinal tract, they run into cells, tearing them and freeing lubricating mucus within.
more mucus is good, says dr. paul l. mcneil, cell biologist at the medical college of georgia and corresponding author on the study published online aug. 21 and scheduled for the september print issue of plos biology. "when you eat high-fiber foods, they bang up against the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract, rupturing their outer covering. what we are saying is this banging and tearing increases the level of lubricating mucus. it's a good thing."
the fact that consuming roughage increases mucus production was known, and years ago, dr. mcneil discovered frequent cell injury and repair occur when we eat.
the new research ties the two together.
"it's a bit of a paradox, but what we are saying is an injury at the cell level can promote health of the gi tract as a whole," says dr. mcneil. even though epithelial cells usually live less than a week, they are regularly bombarded, in most of us at least three times a day as food passes by. "these cells are a biological boundary that separates the inside world, if you will, from this nasty outside world. on the cellular scale, roughage, such as grains and fibers that can't be completely digested, are a mechanical challenge for these cells," says dr. mcneil.
but in what he and colleague dr. katsuya miyake view as an adaptive response, most of these cells rapidly repair damage and, in the process, excrete even more mucus, which provides a bit of cell protection as it eases food down the gi tract.
in research published in 2003 in proceedings of the national academy of sciences, dr. mcneil showed proof of his then decade-old hypothesis that cells with internal membranes use those membranes to repair potentially lethal outer-membrane injuries. a recent paper published in nature in collaboration with dr. kevin campbell's laboratory at the university of iowa showed how human disease, including certain forms of muscular dystrophy, can result from a failure of this mechanism.
an outer membrane tear is like an open door through which calcium just outside the cell rushes in. too much calcium is lethal but that first taste signals the vulnerable cell it better do something quick. with epithelial cells, several of the internal mucus-filled compartments fuse together within about three seconds, forming a patch to fix the tear. in the process the compartments expel their contents so, almost like a bonus, extra mucus becomes available to lubricate the gi tract.
"we have found a very natural way we can enhance mucus production," says dr. miyake, cell biologist and the study's first author. he and dr. mcneil suspected for years that mucus escaped cells as a result of injury. "you might have predicted it, but Science is about testing predictions," says dr. mcneil.
to test their theory, dr. miyake, co-director of mcg cell imaging core laboratory, began working on a method to reproduce cell injuries. "dr. miyake developed a very potent cutting edge technology involving the two photon laser that allowed us to blast small holes in cells, mimicking what happens in the living animal. it also allowed us to assess in those living cells whether they could reseal, repair the damage and how they might respond biologically, namely in this case, whether they responded by secreting mucus as part of the healing process," dr. mcneil says.
they found time and again that most cells did just that, including intact cells in a section of the gi tract. "epithelial cells are high-turnover cells but they have a built-in survivability," dr. mcneil says.
the scientists aren't certain how many times cells can take a hit, but they suspect turnover is so high because of the constant injury. potentially caustic substances, such as alcohol and aspirin, can produce so much damage that natural recovery mechanisms can't keep up. but they doubt a roughage overdose is possible.

the research was funded by nasa.
dr. toru tanaka, a pharmacologist at the josai university in japan and an expert in mucus measurement, is a study co-author.
It has been OK. I am constantly on t he diet and the enema. I have one BM a day which is without blood. It is formed at the beginning but later becomes "pudding". I still have a lot of gas. It seems like whatever i eat i have a lot of it. It seems like i came to the place where nothing is moving forward. I wish i have more formed stool and the gases disappear. Maybe my colon needs time to heal and the place where i am right now needs to take a little more time.
Kamkos
ps. I am no longer taking Prednisone and i am on Colazal now.
