yayyyy!!! I am glad you got that nasty thing out also!!! My bleeding slowed down finally a little this morning. So your OB/GYN knew there were side effects with it? I am already starting to feel better....its been a week today!!
I am almost 30 days post Mirena removal and feeling wonderful. The heavy bleeding and clotting lasted a couple of days and was sometimes frightening due to the large clots! It shouldn't last too much longer for you though. I too felt the "fog" lift within 24 hours. It's defintely worth it. In almost a month I've lost most of the pounds gained on this thing. All the pain...back, joint, pelvic is gone now. Sex drive is back to normal and pain free. I would highly recommend anyone having these symptoms with the Mirena to GET IT OUT!! Don't let the doctors control what you know is going on in your body. You will not regret having it removed.
How long did it take for your joint pain to go away. I am at 7 days and my joints still hurt, but my moodiness is finally gone!!! Yes, big clots and heavy bleeding although its finally starting to slow down. I truely believe those clots had been sitting up there awhile. I am not a doctor and dont know if its possible, but I am having worse bleeding and clotting than when I had each of my son's!!! When I stand up, I keep telling my husband "oh my gosh...I think one of my ovaries just came out!! lol!!
I know the feeling! Standing in shower w/super tampon in...blood and clots still dripping down in the water. It was a mess for a few days. My theory was all that blood was just stitting up there waiting for the "plug" to be removed! lol!! The joint pain took a little longet to resolve. I've only been without joint pain for about the last week. That and the acne seems to be the slowest side effect to correct. I pretty much have no joint pain now, just an occasional twinge when I sit still for too long, then get up. But even that's improved drastically. It will keep getting better daily and I'm still noticing improvement. However, I'm in regular PMS now since it's time for my first normal period...so that's masking some of my progress this week. At least I know it will end when the blood flows!! Thank goodness!
I don't know if any of you experienced this. My Uterus was sore for days after removal, kind of like it is after giving birth. I would like to know if any one else noticed this. I am so glad that thing is gone. I am almost 100% back to myself.
Its so good to know that these joint pains will go away....every single day (a week and a day) I notice that I am feeling better. The blood is finally slowing down, definately not gone yet though. About your uterus being sore....mine was right after I had it removed and for about 3 days afterwards. Like when I would cough it would hurt. Doctors really need to warn of the side effects of this Mirena. I wrote to the FDA yesterday about this.
You know... Drs overlook things all the time till something really bad happens then they start to realized that maybe the pts aren't crazy. Just b/c it doesn't say on the lable that these side effects may occur doesn't mean they won't. We are all the time hearing about drugs which were thought to be "safe" comming up with potentially harmful even fatal side effects which weren't caught during the trial of the drug. I am going to report my sysmtoms to the FDA since they are other wise unexplained.
My side effect resulted in pregnancy.. I had the mirena in for about 3 1/2 years with little side effects. Suddenly had about a 3 weeks period went to the doctors and she told me that was fine. Anyway months past and I started feeling sick and went to my general doctor and she told me i had IBS. Anyway a month or so later i go back to OBGYN and find out I am pregnant and not only that i was 22 weeks pregnant they showed me my daughter right there. IT was shocking.... I mean i accepted it and was kind of happy after but this didnt give me any time to prepare. My daughter was born about 18 weeks later healthy 8lbs 6 oz. Never did find that damn IUD.!!!!!
I have tried every pill and the patch and today the doctor suggested Mirena. I have never heard good things about IUD's so I got the info she gave me and have then been doing research on my own. That is of course how I found this website. Birth control does not work for me, I have experienced every negative side effect that they can cause, I cant handle any of it. I thought perhaps this would be a good alternative, but after reading everyones responses I feel hopeless in finding a successful way to avoid pregnancy. i wonder if everyone on this website is the 1% that is supposed to be effected or if this is just womens truth. My intuition leads me to believe it is probably the truth, even though I would rather believe it is what I have been looking for. I dont know what to do at this point, so if anyone has advice on what to do about my dilemna I could really use it. I love my boyfriend we have been together for a long time and we dont want to have to use condoms. I just need to find a decent birth control.
Thanks to all who have advice.
I can seriously tell you that having the Mirena IUD put in was the worst mistake I ever made. Six weeks after I had my son via C-Section I went to my GYN and had him put in the IUD (3 of my girlfriends use it and never had problems). Almost immediatly I began having problems I bled for 4 months and then spotted 3 days out of every week. I suffered extreme depression (never experienced that before) and was misdiagnosed with postpartum; which I knew it wasn't to blame. I lost my sex drive, gained 20 pounds, had pain with intercourse, and bleeding after sex. I was also tender in my abdomen for over a year.... I KNEW IT WAS THE IUD but refused to believe it because I was having depressive thoughts. I even contemplated suicide a few times. STUPID ME! After suffering for 15 months I finally one morning woke up with severe pain in my abdomen and went to the ER. The attending doctor immediatly removed my IUD and told me I was one of the few women who not only are sensitive to the hormonal changes but also reject the device. My body had been telling me all along to get the damn thing out I just wasn't listening. I had the IUD removed a week ago and can say that as soon as he removed it my pain went away, i've lost 4 pounds in 6 days, and my sex drive seems to be coming back.. plus no crazy thoughts, depression, or fatigue. I can honestly say that I would not recommend the Mirena IUD to anyone, since there is no way to determine who will have these serious side effects that could cause unstable health and possibly mental duress and suicide. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms I hope you do not ignore your symptoms and suffer for as long as I did.... it wasn't worth it.
Tera
teralynn, i read your message after finding this website. i had a marina iud placed over one year ago. i had bleeding for the first three months with terrible cramping. the bleeding stopped but my monthly periods went from 5-6 days per month to 10-14 days per month with spotting off and on in between periods. i have constant vaginal irritation, pain after intercourse at times, chronic migraines and have started topamax and imitrex for these and i have gained over twenty pounds. i am also being treated for depression taking cymbalta. i have been seeing my family md and have repeatedly asked if these could be related to the iud and they keep telling me no. i am scheduled for my annual ob/gyn visit this week on wednesday 1/11 and after reading this website i am convinced i want this thing out. i am so relieved to know that i am not crazy and that the iud can actually have side effects. when i had it placed my ob/gyn told me there were minimal to no side effects ( with absence of periods and headaches being the only ones). does anyone have any other suggestions of different types of birth control that i can use? i am not ready to have tubal ligation. i have three children but i have a successful career and i have thought about having another child in the future so i do not want to have my tubes tied yet. i have always been a small healthy person and this past fourteen months has been very hard because of the depression and weight gain regardless of dieting and exercise. my doctor repeatedly tells me that my body is changing with age and i just need to accept it. i am so glad that i actually looked on the internet and found this website. the mirena website has so little biased information. teralyn, i hope that things get better for you! good luck to all! any suggestions from anyone let me know! thanks, rachel
does anyone know of other forums like this for other forms of birth controll? I've decided to have the mirena removed but I'm not sure if I even want to try the paragard and risk having bad cramps and long heavy periods, and I don't know if I want to have a tubal ligation because I'v heard that it can cause changes in you hormone levels too... I would like to find more information on these things from people's personal accounts instead of propaganda.
I am an attorney in Dallas, Texas. I have had the exact problems since the IUD was inserted in December. I have become so bloated that I feel miserable all of the time. I am basically to the point where I have begun starving myself to offset the weight gain. I was on my period when I had the Mirena inserted and haven't quit bleeding since. I feel nauseated twenty-four hours a day coupled with complete exhaustion. Every bit of information that I have seen on Mirena does not list the side effects I was experiencing. I have been taking a prescription anti-bloating mediation and have almost become dehydrated as a result. I have made a couple of trips to the doctor and have been aware thats something felt wrong. I am one hour from my appointment to have Mirena removed.
I am asking you for help. I have decided to do something about this. There are too many women suffering as I have been and it is just inexecusable. I am planning to pursue this issue with the manufacturer. I understand that some have had good results, but the majority have not.
I will initiate an action at no cost to you. Please provide me with your name and contact info via email or fax, phone, etc. if you have had problems and want to make a difference. The more women that assist, the more likely we are to make a difference and possibly recover for the pain and frustration we have suffered.
Thanks.

I have never posted on a web-site like this before... but
after googling up Mirena... this site popped up and I was
amazed.. so I joined up to tell my story. I had the Mirena
inserted 6 weeks after my first son... that was 13 months ago.
I never had any problems intially (or so I thought) my husband
was constantly telling me I had turned into a b*%. I thought
"oh well" that just goes along with being a new mom. NOPE ---
It goes along with having a Mirena inserted!!! Then about 4 months
after having it... the ovarian cysts started..Here I go in and out
of the Gyno's office to have them examined.. Keep in mind I had NEVER
had any cysts of this size before and NONE that were ever painful.
I insisted to my Dr. that the Mirena pamphlet said it was a RARE
side affect and maybe we should take it out.... OH NO, my Dr. said...
Your ovaries make cysts every month.. but since childbirth your
body may have changed and now there just a little bigger and more
uncomfortable... besides, he had never heard or read of the Mirena
doing that... well, I made him go get the pamphlet and sure enough,
(on my 3rd visit with another painful cyst) he admitted it did read
as a side affect, but mine were probably not from the Mirena.... WHAT ???
Why are these damn doctors so intent on not listening to their patients?
Anyway, about a week ago I woke up in the middle of the night with
what I would call SEVERE thigh and leg cramps... took some advil
and back off to sleep... the next few days cramping persisted in my
lower back all the way down to my thighs... and then the bleeing
started (which I had not had ANY bleeding in about 10 months)
Then started the abdominal cramping...(similar to contractions...well
maybe not that bad) To make a long story even longer... I went to
my OBG-YN and demanded he take it OUT !!!! And he still didn't want
to... it was almost a scene in the Dr's office because he wouldn't
do what I told him. Well, he took it out and that was yesterday morning...
I'm still experiencing lower back pain and slight bleeding, but according
to you guys who have had it taken out... I'm hoping the thigh and back
pain will go away.... Will it??? Please someone tell me it will.
My advice DO NOT GET THE MIRENA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And if you
have it...........HAVE IT REMOVED IMMEDIATELY... because if you don't
have problems now...you probably will !!!!
I feel as if I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I am a 29-year-old mother of three (newest being eight months old) who had my IUD placed when the baby was six weeks old, which is about six and a half months ago. The placement of it was one of the most painful things I have ever experienced but I attributed that to just having given birth and a sensitive cervix and uterus. And thus my attributing "things" to other things began. I was so tired but I reasoned that was because I was the mother of three small children. I couldn't lose my baby weight 20 pounds (which had happened easily with my first two pregnancies) but in my mind it must be because it had been five years and I was about to be 30. I have had pelvic pressure and pain which I attributed to giving birth to three children (preemies with complications) and thought that it was just my female organs telling me that they were worn out. The extreme vaginal dryness and PAINFUL intercourse I of course attributed to breastfeeding. My aching joints I thought that was just another sign of what giving birth multiple times does to your body. There are more but I will stop here. For the past six months I have thought that I must certainly have something really bad wrong. From the moment I had the Mirena inserted it did not feel right. I went back six weeks later to check placement which I felt sure it had to be out of place, it wasn't. So, for the past six months I have been telling myself to give it time and my body would adjust. As I listed above all of the "symptoms" I have been having I thought were problems coming from other areas of my life, I never even considered that it was the IUD. I have been telling my husband that surely when I stop breastfeeding the vaginal dryness and painful intercourse would go away and recently he lovingly reminded me that it wasn't that way with the first two children who I also breastfed. So, as the time has worn on I have begun to think and ask myself what is wrong with me? Is is postpartum depression, am I lazy now that I am a mother of three (I will fall asleep sitting in a chair which has never been a trait of mine) or do I have some sort of serious illness (MS I have wondered). So, about a week ago I decided after looking on Mirena's website that there was no information there and my doctor had assured me that it wasn't the IUD, I decided that I would search the web until I found out something that could help me decide what is wrong with me. About a week ago I stumbled across this website with a Google search and me jaw dropped as I began to read. I read for a couple of hours (late at night) and then woke up my husband who thought that I must be crazy to tell him that I really wasn't crazy. The next day I called him at work to tell him everything and how so many women have the same things wrong with them that are wrong with me and they have or had the Mirena. And the good news is that there were several that wrote after having them removed to say that the side effects started to go away with the removal of it. I made an appointment today for next Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. to have it removed. I really hope that my OB understands and has an open mind because that is how she has always been but if for some reason she doesn't then we will agree to disagree and I am having it removed regardless. I am so excited to think that in a little over four days this nightmare will have a beginning to its end! I feel that surely there should be some federal guideline that would force the company to publish these possible side effects, even if it doesn't effect everyone the same way. It is only fair to any woman that she knows what could possibly happen to her. I am going to be contacting the FDA ASAP to tell them my story and I urge anyone else who is out there to do the same. I hope that you all are well and I look forward to soon rejoining the land of the living!!
It has been a while since I posted but I just wanted to let everyone know that I did have my IUD removed and now six months later I weigh 25 pounds less, have energy and no joint aches or pelvic pain anymore. I feel so normal again!! I really try to advocate to friends now about the Mirena and tell them what it can do to them. I feel that it is our responsibilty (those of use who have had one and experienced the horrible side effects) to get the word out. I can't imagine sitting by and letting someone that I care about go through what I went through. Good luck to anyone who is awaiting a removal or anticipating a removal (just do it because you will be glad that you did). If I hear of an active lawsuit I can assure you that I will take part and I will post on this site of such. Best wishes to you all.
do you think after i have mine puff be gone i can lose 25.
