hi... I am a chronic cold sore sufferer. Used to get them as a kid a couple of times as a kid. Now in my 30's I am getting them every few months. And they are moving too. ALWAYS they would be on my lower left lip. Now sometimes they are on my top right lip, my lower right lip and today I woke up with one on my chin right below my lip! What is going on?
I have two yougn sons. One has never had one. The other gets them a few times a year too.
I had a friend tease me that I have herpes, but is it the same as genital herpes? I don't have that. My husband and I have been together since high school so we are the only partners we've had. So it would not have come from another partner. He has never gotten a cold sore either. If they are so contagious, I'd think he'd get the germ from me, even though I will not kiss him when I have it.
My mom says they come from being stressed of having an upset stomach. Is that true?
My dentist gave an RX for denavir. I use the cream. Also I take lysine. Is that helpful or is that a myth?
Please help me understand why they are occurring more frequently and what I can do to prevent them.
Hello. I got my first cold sore when I was 19. It was smack dab in the middle of my chid and the size of a quarter. It was awful. I would get them often and they would stay on my chin for about 2 weeks. I still have a bad scar. I used to get teased about it being the same as genital herpes too. That's not how I got it though. I know that for a fact! :) I think stress does play a big part but is not always the cause for a breakout. After my mother died I never broke out, and that was very stressful. I can tell you that for me, I appears to be certain foods and drinks. I heard many years ago that Coke, chocolate, peas, beer and something else, I can't remember, will contribute to a breakout. For me, it is Coke. Every time I drink a Coca Cola, I get a cold sore. I have found that other Coke products such as Barqs Root Beer will do the same. If it have even the slightest taste of Coke, I stay away from it. I took Lysin for a while but just got out of the habit. I'm really not sure how well it works. By the way, I am 36 now and have not had a cold sore in about 8 years. However, I do get canker sores. For me, I will take a canker sore over a cold sore anyday. They are both painful but I don't have people staring at my chin anymore and I don't have to worry about anyone or anyting touching it.
