my 9yo has been soiling her panties for a long time, and I just figured it was due to a weakened anal sphincter from several bouts of impacted colon, which she was hospitalized for when she was 6 but when she saw her sister getting an enema she asked what does that do. I sain it was to make her sister be able to poo. and that's when she told me she couldn't poo either, so I tried to give her one, and couldn't even get anything in her. the tube would only go in about 1/4" and all the water just leaked right out how can I get her to be able to go? should I take her to the hostital for disimpaction again?
I thank everyone for your help and my 7yo catelin is feeling much better, I hope you can help me with ashley's problem too
Im sorry your children are having to deal with this, and for your sadness at seeing your children in discomfort.
Have you tried things like Cascara Sagrada? This herb is a natural laxative. A lot of water? You could fill up water bottles and have them drink all day from them at school & home etc.
Make sure the girls are getting plenty of exercise and eating things like Celery , carrots, fiber, fresh fruit and juices. Even herbal teas with honey are great.
yes I started catelyn on those already, but ashley is too impacted for that right now. I've been packing her anus in ky jelly after each attempt at giving an enema, but still have been unable to move the impacted stool enough to insert the tube beside it. her sphincter can't even fully close with the impaction in the way and that allows small pieces of the impaction to fall out and soil her panties. would it be safe to gently push on the mass to try to get the tube past it?
I believe that if the impaction is that severe, it might be best to go ahead and get her professionally treated. Once the impaction is gone, then you can try some natural remedies for chronic constipation. First and foremost, she must get plenty of water as water. Use fruit juice, fresh when ever possible as a back-up and tasty treat. Avoid all soft drinks, teas and milk. Make sure she eats plenty of juicy raw fruit for snacks and dessert.
If her peristalsis is weak an herbal stimulant like Cascara Sagrada would probably help. However, do not use for too long a time with out breaks to make sure she does not become dependent on it. I think two weeks on and two weeks off would be a good idea. That way you can see if the treatment is working and she can go by herself.
Make sure she consumes at least a tablespoon of a good plant based oil every day. This helps lubricate the system and stimulate the liver, which in turn helps keep the bowels moving. Also, make her some lemonade using fresh lemons. She should drink at least two glasses a day to help stimulate liver function. If her stool remains dry and hard, a natural lubricating agent like aloe vera or slippery Elm might be advisable.
Plenty of pure water, fresh fruits, and healthy oils should help her become regular and stay regular, but a little more intervention may be needed at first.
I would like to try everything else first, she is terribly afraid of doctors, and it is difficult to get her to assume the knee-chest position even at home.
I was reading some other topics and seen where someone moved the mass enough to get the tube in, and tried it. it sort of worked. i was able to insert the tube, but it s was only a minute before it started leaking out as fast as it was going in, however some of the impaction came out with it. now at least her weak sphincter can close when she's lying down, but it is still fully open in either the knee-chest or lying on back with upraised legs positions. I went ahead and gave catelyn a follow-up enema, and she expelled only soft liquid stool, so she's doing good again.
I would try to remove as much as I could myself and then if you are unsuccessful in getting a movement then take her in for professional assistence. Also, consider using a natural lubricant like olive oil or coconut oil to lubricate since it does not contain chemicals.
What do your children normally eat? After you resolve this, it may be a good idea to look at what the family is eating and use this as a springboard to improve diet. Much of eating habits are aquired through modeling. Begin by slowly revamping their diet and educating them so that they will understand that good bowel health has much to do with what they choose to eat. If you have not already, begin changing from refined grains to whole grains including variety like oats, quinoa, amaranth and potatoes with the skins. Try buying fruits and veggies grown locally since they taste better. When fruit is good, it is easy to get children to eat it. Reduce sugar intake reserving sugary treats for special occasions. Make pumpkin or carrot muffins using whole grain flour and reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe or you can make bars with grains, seeds and dates or figs. If you let them help you make them, they will be excited to try them. Make sure children are drinking plenty of water and only allow 1 serving of juice per day if at all. Do not give your children milk or dairy regularly if at all.
Serve legumes and moderate amounts of animal protein that are not factory farmed and use good oils raw in foods. For example, if you cook veggies or lentils, put a tablespoon of EVOlive Oil in it right before serving. If you think these changes are difficult now, they will only become more difficult. Now you still have control because you do the shopping and preparing.
Maybe some colonic therapy may help if this has been an ongoing problem. Good Luck.
ok, I'm going to try this again, I covered the floor with towels, because of the mess, and I was wondering if it would be ok touse a gloved thumb pressed against the sphincter to allow it to stay in instead of leaking out?
also, how do I get it out? do I try ro get ahold of it when the water comes out, or is there an easier way? also, I've been having her sit on the toilet between attempts, because some of the water stayed in last time, and leaked out in her clothes is this good, or should I just put a wad of tp in her underwear?
that's what I do for catelyn when I give her olive oil enemas which I started doing once a day now
Not sure about the enema. Can you break off little pieces? If you cannot get enough out for her to evacuate today, take her to the doc for removal. Is her belly distended?
I agree to get professional help with your daughter at this point as well.
There are a lot of toxins built up and this is not good for her and she sounds very uncomfortable.
I would try to tell her she will feel more comfortable when her colon is cleansed.
You can give her some chamomile tea to help relax and calm her, valerian root capsules may help, just to ease her fears?
I would go ahead and make an appointment. It sounds like a very uncomfortable situation.
Ok, I made one for wednesday morning, I tried pulling on the part that sticks out after another enema, but it just broke apart about an inch up, and that's all that came out
I would like to know how to go about removing it, because as loose as her sphincter is I can easily insert a gloved finger to guide the enema tube past the blockage, and I think I might be able to remove it
I am happy to hear that your 7 year old daugher is better. During one of my impactions, the nurse put on a plastic glove and gently with her index finger started removing the impacted feces. She fingered it out in pieces and then gave me a fleet enama.
I don't feel that constipation is due to lack of fiber as much as it is the consumption of wheat, dairy products and processed foods. Please check out opioid peptides. Opioid can cause constipation.
You have been given a lot of great information. I hope it is helpful.
thanks, I've made diet changes, but catelyn is aver anal retentive, and ashley tries to be, but with the weak sphincter just ends up soiling her clothes
both girls have been constipated since they were very young
I tried again, and this time I was able to get the tube about 4" past the blockage, and was able to get about a pint of olive oil in her before it started leaking out. then I inserted a gloved finger and began to break pieces off I was able to remove about 1 pound of the blockage before all the oil leaked out.
