  • oil pulling and cavity on root canal tooth "almost to the bone"??? by  #69336  6 year  23,787  Oil Pulling / Dental Sup / Dental Hea
Hi, I just went to a new dentist last week, and got the very bad news that the tooth adjacent to the molar I came to the dentist about had a cavity. This tooth is a molar also (#19), and when she took the crown off (been there since '96) and started drilling, she said the tooth is "very bad" and that I should get it replaced with an implant. Aside from the cost, I said I really wanted to keep the tooth, and she agreed to wait 6 weeks while I did herbs (BC&F, etc.) etc. to try to help the tooth. The problem is though that she said the cavity was "almost to the bone" (I believe it's under the gum tissue) and that she only got rid of 90% of the decay (leaving an old composite filling there). I asked how she would be able to tell if the tooth could survive more than 2 years (her prediction) if I didn't get the implant. She said it depended on the inflammation that is still there in 6 weeks, when I see her again. Right now there's a temp crown there.
So I'm motivated to do whatever I can to help the tooth. Of course I will do oil pulling, no question (which I do about 5 times a week anyway). Does anyone know if this will help get rid of inflammation -- we're talking about a dead, root-canaled tooth and related gum tissue that I'm trying to get looking good enough to moderate the inflammation.
Can a root canaled tooth remineralize, with either oil pulling or BC&F or Barefoot's tooth powder -- or can the decay that's "close to the bone" disappear with any of these methods, fomentation included? I trust that this would work well with a live tooth -- just don't know about a dead one, or if there's anything I can do to keep this tooth.
Thank you so much for any help you could give.

Well Trapper has been experimenting with the remineralization thing, so he can speak about that.

As far as gum inflammation, you are definitely in the right place at the right time. I'd say get the best oil you can, and do this twice a day (morning and just before dinner). Try one oil in the morning, and another at night. I'd make one of those oils Hemp, because as far as I can tell, that's one powerful pulling action.

I'd also swish with a few drops of Oil of Oregano (make sure it is not diluted with something else like Olive Oil). I'm going to start putting Black Cumin Seed Oil in my oil pulling, because they say that it cures everything but death.

I'm sure others will chime in. This is just my 2 cents.

You must let us know how your next visit goes. We are right there with you, rooting you on.

I don't know if this will help, but between oil pulling and doing the MC, I had a tooth that the gums had receded very badly. The tooth was super sensitive and discolored above the normal gum line. One day I looked in the mirror and the skin had grown back. You can tell it is new growth as it is a different color from the other skin. When people can't believe me, I just show them. Aloha

      Hello,
My daughter had 8 cavities (at the age of 5, 16 months ago) that I did not get filled. We started to add more butter and cod liver oil (weston a price) and recently we started oil swishing and adding cal/mag.
She chipped her front tooth and I took her to the dentist (a different dentist), they did xrays and came back saying she had only 2 cavities. They want to do a root canal on the one tooth. I looked in her mouth and saw that there was a hole where one of the cavities is...BUT the brown spots where the cavities where are GONE! No brown spots!
I am requesting her xrays from her old dentist to compare them.

But I think the diet and especially the oil swishing has healed her cavities.

      • i was going to post the same suggestion. by  leyla  6 year  23,021
my son is 3 1/2, about a year ago he had many cavities, about 6 i think, only one we had filled and the others took a wait and see approach. I started cod liver oil and butter with him and really cracked down on his diet, and now a year later, i dont see any brown spots left(they were all visible) and latest check dentist said only one small cavity too small to fill(tiny teeth!)
I had a filling fall out, and havent had it replaced, in this past year i also began the cod liver oil butter combo, and the area looks much more like a healthy tooth now, not like a tooth with holes all over it. I have yet to find out if it is doing the trick, but i think it is.

the oil pulling has helped all gum inflammation and discomfort in my receding area go away, but unfortuately i havent been consistent with it enough to see results beyond that, hope to get back on that soon as the results were fast and dramatic for my gums!

if you go the cod live oil route, be sure to carefully choose, so as not to injest metals and the what not. i use carlson, and the lemon flavor one is really great, almost no detectable fishiness!

        good luck

What is this cod liver oil and butter thing? I never heard of it. My daughter is 6 and has a tartar problem behind her lower front teeth, and one of those teeth looks brown in an area in the back. Luckily, this is a baby tooth and she will lose it soon anyway. It looks like it is on the inside of the tooth. She of course won't OP, being six, it is hard enough to get her to let me help her brush. So, what is this about the cod liver oil and butter? I'd like to learn about it for her.

          Thanks!

I am not sure what exactly they are talking about re: cod liver and butter (and am anxious to hear more, because I have two toddlers who refuse to have their teeth brushed...). you should look at the weston a. price fdn. site.

any recommendations on toddler toothcare anyone wants to send my way, bring it!

Another really good book is by weston a price "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration". (the website is above...but the book is incrediable to actually see pictures.) He was a dentist is the 1920's? and he traveled the world to see what healthy primitive people with little dental decay eat. He has before and after pictures in the book of people who had very bad teeth and bone structure and then were cured.
He used cod liver oil for the high vit D and grassfed raw (yellow) butter for an componant called 'activator x'. that activated or increased the absorbtion of minerals.

I finally found the link I was looking for.....http://www.westonaprice.org/traditional_diets/ancient_dietary_wisdom.html

Do you have experience with butter oil and cod liver oil?

I am thinking about getting some. Worried about my daughters' teeth!

I love the WAP info. Helped me through my pregnancy and early days with my girls. Can't say enough good stuff about Sally Fallon's stuff.

Please contact Nina Planck, a "real food" proponent, if you have experience to share with pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, or baby-feeding nutrition. She is working on a book about those areas. Her site is:

            • this is what i do to brush his teeth by  leyla  6 year  22,471
i had the WORST time getting him to let me brush his teeth, and felt like i had tried everything, until i stumbled upon this position, and it has worked since.
i put him in my lap, legs to the side, put my left arm around him like a hug, and lean him back on that arm, brushing with my right hand, somehow, the hug/snuggle-ness of it makes him less resistant. in the begining he was mildly resistant(an improvment) but he liked it that way and got used to it quickly, now jumps right up into the lap. Granted sometimes i have to really cajole, like no bedtime stories if he doesnt cooperate, and that usually(eventually) does it.

good luck, those little guys have a very big iron will!:)

its a long book, but very inspirational, and even made an impression on my husband, and my 3 year old, as well as extended family into the importance of diet in dentition. long and short, he did a test program with children, supplementing their poor diets with a good meal and butter(albeit a high potency butter, the likes of which are hard to come by) and a spoon of good quality cod liver oil, the results were dramatic in improving the kids dental health.

            a really great read!

Unfortunately, you are reading a book that was based on research done almost 90 years ago. Most if not all of it has been disproved. The point about Dr. Price going around the world to investigate other cultures is an interesting point. Yes, it is true that their diet made a difference, but it was not what they were eating, but more what they weren't. Third world countries have very little if any access to refined sugars. Cut out refined sugars, and tooth decay and gum disease go way down. It is that simple. All the diets he advocated are just a total waste of time. If your child has cavities, then you need to help them, and get them proper care. It is one thing if you personally want to practice alternative medicine, but don't subject your children to things that can potentially be very dangerous.

                Hi, Tac --

My first reaction is that when we eat a refined SAD, we don't have room for the other "traditional" foods. My second is that a lot of the WAP stuff we can find evidence for here in this country. Going to other cultures to learn often makes things clearer when you bring the knowledge back home. And we can see upward trends in heart disease, etc. and chart those right next to the increased use of industrial foods. I have a belief that is certainly shared by many that those side-by-sides are causal, not correlative.

However, my other thought is that this is starting to feel like a Nourishing Traditions discussion rather than an oil-pulling forum offshoot! Sorry for my role in this. I am not sure how to cross-post there, but any WAP-related stuff should probably begin again over there! We do talk a lot about teeth here....and dentists, that is for sure!

                Laura

Of course i realize this is old research. that is pretty obvious. and i do agree that it is as much or more about what you do not eat, as much as what you do eat. The work of dr. price is continuing through through the work of many other health practioners who believe his work to be as relevant today as it was then. Certainly not all agree with every one of his points verbatim, but it is very relevant rresearch in many peoples opinions, and from that perspective has not been disproven. I am continually reading and searching like many do for ways to care for myself and my family in a healthy non invasive manner. I would appreciate anything you can share about how his results were disproven, as we are all here to learn and share.

As for the decision to give CLO and butter to my child and myself, there is a whole lot of support for ingesting cod liver oil, so i dont really see the potentially dangerous part of supplementing our diets with it, particularly a very picky 3 year old who can use a little dietary boost! and as for a little butter everyday, i dont believe it to be a problem either, although certainly there are those who do not think it wise to ingest animal fats, at this point i am fine with it for us in low moderation, as we are already vegetarian and dont consume much in this way.
my choice to try this method, along with being impressed with dr. prices research, was in the hope that there may be a non invasive and preventative way to care for us.

    • Implant option by  SoulfulSurvivor  6 year  22,868
Just wanted to pass this along with regards to dental implants. My mother-in-law recently had an implant installed and it has caused problems, ever since. There is the possibility that the body will reject the implant, outright, and cause serious complications. Then, there's the milling process of the implanted tooth, itself, to mesh with the natural bite of the patient - if that procedure is done incorrectly, the rest of the mouth will be thrown off, causing grinding, improper chewing, offset jaw, TMJ, etc.

I can't say much about root canals - I've had one and will never opt for another.

      Best of luck to you!
