ok many things have helped my lips-calcium, fatty acids, potassium and alkalizing, what seems to be working the best thus far is iron. I was feeling tired and went to the dr. my hemoglobin was normal but I asked to get my ferritin tested (ferritin tests storage iron). Turns out my storage iron was very low, four weeks after iron supplementation (Floradix liquid) my lips are not peeling anymore. Something that iron has done that the other supplements didnt do was make my skin and lips stronger and more plump. Please get your ferritin tested, its a cheap test to get.
I have seen Peeling lips listed as a symptom of iron deficiency on the web.

hi, i read on wikipedia that cheilitis can be caused by vitamin b12 deficiency and iron deficiency. how long did you have to take the iron before you saw results? also what kind of iron are you taking? is it supplements and what dose? how much mg? what is the exact brand name becuase i see that some have yeast and b vitamins others dont. Did a doctor recommend iron to you for your cheilitis?
I saw less peeling after two weeks and complete healing after about a month and a half. I might see slight dryness on some days if I miss a dose. I take the yeast free Floradix brand two times per day (two teaspoons @ two times per day). Sometimes I take it with meals and sometimes inbetween meals. I think taking it between meals is better.
I was seeing my Dr. for fatigue and asked my ferritin to be tested. I had heard about iron deficiency causing dry/peeling lips and thought it might help but did not have high hopes when I started.
Do you have to get an order from a doctor to check for Iron defecincy? Are your lips fully healed? I myself have been doing a lot of research on this. Currently I'm testing out some methods of my own and they are working! My lips rarely peel and are much mor attached. However, they are not fully healed. I'm interested in taking Iron as well!
joylovepeace, did you have any other symptoms that may have suggested iron deficiency? Also, how did your peeling lips start? was it self-inflicted? Did your lips turn wet when wet with water?
YES! I was about to ask that, did your lips turn white when exposed to water? That's the major problem that I still have. Like I said I have been doing a number of things and I have managed to slow down the cycle (it used to be like 2-3 days, now it's like 2 weeks) and my lips look normal but like in the 2 weeks time my lips look white again! So by taking Iron did this reaction stop? (that is if you had it in the first place)
I have other deficiencies as well as iron so my symptoms may be over lapping-
I went to the Dr. for fatigue and found out I have iron deficiency and Vit D deficiency (which may also mean a deficiency in calcium since Vit D is required for absorption of calcium).
So far the symptoms that I had before taking iron that are being helped by iron are -
insomnia, dry peeling lips, dry skin, dry peeling feet, fatigue. Its only been a month and a half and supposedly it takes about three months to see the full benefits of iron supplementation.
I should add that I have been taking vitamin D as well, so it could be having some effect. I think its mostly the iron that is helping because I really noticed my lips healing when I took full doses of iron, and my lips get more dry when I miss a dose.
I would say my lips are almost fully healed, some days I feel a tightness or topical touch of dryness that makes me wonder. No more peeling like before. I'm confident that I am close to being fully healed, I just had peeling lips for so long that Im still in disbelief and look for every sign of dryness.
My particular peeling lip symptoms were-dry, cracked, raw, peeling (sometimes thin peeling sometimes thick), they didnt get that white look I have seen in pictures when they got wet.
I always used to take off the old skin, even while I was healing. I just noticed less and less peeling and more solid lips during the first month of supplementation.
Interesting. Glad to hear it's working for you. Iron is one of those things that you don't want to supplement w/o knowing that you need it. Too much iron can be very bad for you.
This also goes to the theory that we don't all have the same root cause for our peeling.
I agree with #76763 that iron supplement that worked for u bcos u had iron deficiency. I'm sure it may not work for most of us as i personally i'm not an iron deficient.
So its better to consult a pysician bfor taking ne supplement. It would b real stupid on our part to take dangerous medicines.
I've had peeling lips for five years and during that time I had numerous blood tests which tested the standard way to test for iron deficiency-hemoglobin. All of my past tests for hemoglobin levels have been NORMAL, even on my current test my hemoglobin is NORMAL but my iron storage level (my Ferritin level) is extremely LOW.
Most doctors only check hemoglobin and if its normal they will ASSUME that you are not iron deficient. You can have enough hemoglobin but if you are low on stored iron (ferritin) then your body is deficient in iron and only has so much iron to work with, thus wound healing could be low, energy could be low etc. Some people dont have extreme symptoms when their ferritin in low.
Low ferritin is often referred to as "iron depletion".
Good sources of dietary iron include red meat, fish, poultry, lentils, beans, leaf vegetables, tofu, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, potatoes with skin, bread made from completely whole-grain flour, molasses, teff and farina.
I had my ferrtin level checked. My reading says that it is 30, the reference values are from 10 - 150 units. So I think that I am low in ferritin too. Please let me know if this is low. I want to try the Floradix iron supplement that helped you with your condition. I am suffering from the same thing since 7 yrs..tried so many things...but nothing cured it..
Please let me know what you feel about my ferritin iron levels and the website from which you buy your Floradix.
You don't have to consult a doctor before taking any supplements. Iron is just one that the body can store and you can take too much of it.
B-vitamins and C are water soluble and the extra gets peed away.
L-lysine is generally well tolerated (unless you have a pre-existing kidney problem). I never took more than 2000mg a day, but I know some people have taken up to 6000mg a day (divided into several doses).
INteresting please keep us updated on how the iron is working. I think I might have an iron deficiency as well. My hands and feet are always cold, I am pretty pale, I get plenty of random headaches, and I am pretty tired usually. I think ill get ths tested for next time I can get to the doctor

I had a multivitamin with iron, plus took an time released iron supplement the 2nd half of the day. No change. I think Candida drains your body iron. I got this from lip biting.
