I believe there may be two main reasons why eggs may cause a gallbladder reaction; food allergies and fat.
Firstly the high fat content of the yolk and the amount of lecithin present in eggs may cause a contraction in the gallbladder whilst a stone or sludge partially blocks the common bile ducts and this leads to pain.
Secondly, food allergies may have a connection to gallbladder symptoms. There is a particular protein/s present in some eggs that commonly causes a allergic reaction. The stomach, duodenum and bile duct may react by local inflammation or even hives and this impedes the flow of bile causing pain. Trials have shown that allergy-elimination diets dramatically improved gallbladder symptoms in 100 percent of his test subjects. The foods most likely to cause symptoms were eggs, followed by pork, onions, poultry, milk, coffee, oranges, corn, beans and nuts.
I have suffer from this problem with eggs which not only cause me intense biliary pain but also cause hives on my skin around the gallbladder area and other places. I even had the same reaction by handling broad bean seeds which helped me solve the mystery. Since flushing the attacks have almost gone and I can enjoy eggs once more.
Additional information
Lecithin is a natural component of fatty foods, especially eggs and organ meats, but low-fat diet trends have reduced our lecithin intake. Aside from bile acids, phospholipids such as lecithin are the principal bile components that keep cholesterol in solution. Research suggests that egg lecithin may be better than other types such as soy lecithin in preventing cholesterol precipitation in the bile. Studies show as little as 300 mg of lecithin per day can raise lecithin levels in the bile.
Some studies have shown fats in the form of cholesterol actually protect against stone formation in humans. In one study, a majority of test subjects fed five to 10 eggs a day for six weeks experienced a decrease in their cholesterol/bile acid ratio. This occurred despite a slight increase in serum cholesterol levels. In another study, risk of gallstone formation decreased when cholesterol consumption increased. The explanation for this paradox may be that the liver synthesises less cholesterol as dietary cholesterol increases.
I don't know much about this, but I'll tell you what I've read and experienced.
Apparently the lecithin sold once upon a time was derived from egg yolks. It was something to do with long chain fatty acids.
Now the source of lecithin seems to be soy.
Someone suggested that cooking and/or beating egg yolks breaks up the long chains of fatty acids, so, what I do is lightly poach my eggs, trying to 'set' the whites and leave the yolks soft. I almost always eat them with vegetables, often in salad, at breakfast.
Some say that undercooked eggs may still carry salmonella. I don't know, although I haven't been that kind of sick for many years.
I was raised with eggs as a primary source of protein.
I have had two eggs daily for most of my life...except for periods of Weight Watchers, which limits egg intake to four per week, substituting small amounts of cheese, or fish, for breakfast protein.
Although I know I have calcified gallstones, and I passed a large one spontaneously by eating large salads with olive oil and lemon juice, I don't think I have ever had a true 'gallbladder attack'.
I have felt very sharp 'twinges' from a herbal tea liver flush, 'prickles' of gallbladder contractions, a 'scooting' of large stones in the duct, and 'heaviness' of stones...but no real 'attack'.
That's my understanding, so far.
Hope this helps.
Fledgling
P.S. I read the posts by Telman and Chava (above) after I posted this.
I need to study what they say, but they certainly ring true, in my experience.
Between my two Humaworm parasite cleanses (today was the last day of my second), my husband and I underwent regular checkup lab tests.
I received no comments from the doctor, but my husband was called to inform him that his 'cholesterol count' was on the high side of the 'normal' range. Doctor didn't suggest anything be 'done' about it...just wanted him to know.
Since bacon and fried eggs, or a bacon sandwich, has been his preferred breakfast for decades, we thought that going without bacon for a while might be a happy choice.
Bless his heart, he did...still having eggs several times a week...although, without the bacon, he had one-egg sandwiches most of the time. Usually his eggs are fried in butter, or, before, in bacon fat.
Recently he started back on the bacon.
Sometime in this last week or two he has complained of a tiredness; and for some time, since before he went off bacon, he has found his nose running. Some nights he even gets up to blow.
Perhaps these symptoms are totally unrelated to bacon or eggs.
Dh is 83, and has always been an active and particularly healthy man.
I have never been a bacon person, but I do like butter...and cream sauce, though I don't eat it often. I have switched, say, half of my fat consumption to olive oil and coconut oil, plus some sesame oil.
I am about a hundred pounds overweight (6 or 7 stone?), and have been slowly creeping down for at least a year, probably due to sugar and starch management in my diet. I suspect the long-standing excess weight is due to parasites, and I hope to drop weight with parasite cleansing. I am 69.
Now to study the above posts for pieces to the puzzle.
I am about a hundred pounds overweight (6 or 7 stone?), and have been slowly creeping down for at least a year, probably due to sugar and starch management in my diet.
----------------------------
Probably? Several months ago I instinctively started to eliminate virtually all sugar and flour products (actually carbs, including potatoes and such) from my diet. The weight really started to come off after that. Don't just manage it. Get rid of it. You don't need it.
I had noted this to my sister and she asked me if I knew a Dr Gott. Never heard of him. But, evidently he has been promoting the "no flour, no sugar" diet for some time. Do a google search and you'll see what's written about it.
I think it may be a sign of the times, especially on this side of the world, that a hundred pounds of extra weight is not uncommon.
Adults who have it have usually have tried everything they can think of, and that has been suggested in the press, with no luck at all.
Actually, the weight may be the main reason I came to CureZone and became involved with the various forms of 'cleansing', discovering some of the 'blocks' to overall well-being.
I have dropped about 30 pounds (2 stone?) from 'controlling' my supposed 'diabetes', over a couple of years.
While I am very pleased with that progress, I know I have reached a 'threshold', and stayed here a very long time. I can't tell you how wearying this is.
Along with my urinary, liver/digestion, and parasite problems, every discovery I make always has that background question...why am I still the wrong shape?
Every household has a variety of preferences among family members. The difference between what keeps my 83 year-old husband well and strong, and what I prefer, is striking.
If I were to eat his food I would certainly die, quickly. He can barely tolerate vegetables, certainly not 'greens'. So, like most families, we compromise...usually preparing different meals. Restaurant food is different again. As is the food served in the retirement home where my parents live.
My brother's family food is different again, and he and his wife prefer entirely different foods from each other.
And we all have different 'health' issues, though there are certain commonalities. I suspect parasites, and salt...and particular changes in the food supply. There may also be general mindsets influencing whole populations toward ill health...I am not wise enough to tell.
What I do know for sure is that each piece of the puzzle I learn, for me, is far simpler and easier than anything I have learned before.
I seldom weigh myself. I may have only 50 pounds of 'excess weight', or 75, depending on whose standard I accept. Yet, when I follow anyone's 'health program', there it remains...why am I still the wrong shape?
I judge not by the fashion of the day, but by how I function. I can only be an expert on myself. I make changes in my own 'lifestyle' very gently, just in case.
Someone pointed out something quite profound the other day.
They said that when we instruct ourselves to NOT do something, the brain must first process the negative scenario to reach what it must do positively.
We give ourselves negative instructions all the time.
What attracts us to crime stories, or the evening news? ...The 'awfulness' of it all, right?
We think we are protecting ourselves...learning what to watch out for...or that it is only fantasy, and has no effect on us, right? WRONG, I think.
If we see only the 'awful', repeatedly, what does our brain have to look forward to? (Let alone what the 'awful' does to a child's brain!)
Even here on CureZone, where we are all looking to be well, we focus on what is w.r.o.n.g in order to notice it and eliminate it...we hope.
In asking my question...why am I still the 'wrong' shape?...I could instead ask...why am I still alive, feeling better and better, and thinking like a thirty-year-old?
It is the grand and the beautiful I need more of in my life...whatever my bathroom scale says.
A short while ago I looked at a picture of my brothers and myself, taken when we were all about thirty. We were gorgeous!
Why did we concentrate on the troubles and stresses of the day? We had life by the tail!
Today, I have life by the tail...I am breathing! I can dream! I know some very fine people who like me! I sleep in a soft bed, drink well-water, and putter in a huge garden under a wide blue sky! Could there be a better opportunity for happiness?!
I already skip newspapers...think I'll go and turn off the TV...maybe sell it.
Fledgling I had to laugh about that you were gorgeous when you were 30. My ex-husband just send me 3 cd's with copies of slides from the 20 years of our marriage and the first thing I told my children I can't believe how good looking we were in our thirties :)
Then I saw the pictures in Amsterdam with all the cars and the way people were dressed and I felt I lived in an "antique" time.
Getting older is a strange thing, the mind does not feel old.
I am with you I don't read newspapers anymore, watch the news or anything negative.
One question occurs to me...how can any of that be 'antique' when it is a part of us, and we are still alive and experiencing more?
Young people don't have the background we did, and no comparison for the events and beliefs of today...unless they stop and listen to their elders. Even then, could they really understand?
(Someone recently told me that most young people just don't care...that they don't THINK...that their minds are so full of 'getting' THINGS, and feeling 'good', that they aren't using their intelligence. I don't know.)
I had a strange thought last night. I saw life reduced to a few very simple basics. I'm not sure I can even explain the concept...soil and water and air functioning as they do, in harmony, without man's interferences, but WITH man's understanding co-operation.
...No-till gardening, for example, breathing under trees, and hanging around waterfalls...quiet and respectful conversation. Something like that.
Then, when falling asleep, a feeling of warmth and clarity came over me. It was lovely.
Perhaps when we look at long ago pictures we see the innocence we had, and the beauty of it, and realize that it still exists in our hearts. Maybe that's what sustains all generations...remembering.
Hope so.
F.
P.S.
I just remembered, the beauty of that strange thought was in recognizing the simple basics that sustain us, no matter what mistakes we make, individually or collectively.
It seemed that if we could just remember air and water and sunshine and soil, when we are troubled or confused or oppressed, that all will be well once more.
That was what made me feel warm and content as I fell asleep. I physically felt warm, enfolded. We should all feel this way, often, I think.
