I once had "ringing" in my ear after going to a disco (ok, you can stop laughing now) that lasted for days, but it stopped after not listening to loud noises for a while. Hyperacusisis probably lasts because loud noises are not removed (may not be the case, but maybe you should oblige them by not asking them to a loud thanksgiving dinner).

About 15 years ago, my grandmother started getting headaches every day. She went to about a dozen doctors over a year and a half, but none found anything wrong with her. Finally, she went to a doctor that actually SPOKE to her and he discovered that the headaches started right after she got her house insulated AGAIN. Because the house was now DOUBLE insulated and she kept the windows CLOSED, there was no FRESH air coming into the house. She was breathing the same old dirty air constantly. The doctor said to crack open a window at both ends of the house. She did that and never got headaches again.
